Is It the Offense Or Defense?

USC coach Pete Carroll said the pass defense is the best since he arrived at USC and said it's one reason the offense struggled in scrimmage situations.
``We haven't been as productive against our defense at any time,'' Carroll said.
As far as the running game, Carroll said, ``What I'm concerned about is getting running backs in the game that know what they are doing at the right time.''

Isn't his job to figure this stuff out? Isn't this why USC pays him the big bucks?

Its simple PC, if you don't know how, hire someone who does.

Don't just allow the best recruiting class in the nation go to waste.

Mike Garrett (you are the man), please save us. PC is way over his head. Hire him more help.

Rick, are you on drugs?

Rick, 2003 -- that was most ludiscrous post I have seen here since Miguelito...

Rick, remember that bruins are for 4 years and Trojans are for life....it time for you to go away!

I just haven't drunk any PC Kool-aid lately. Also, I do believe in accountability, especially at the prices that a head coach costs. (Sorry I understand that most Americans don't understand this concept. We'd just rather look for excuses, or hire lawyers.)

Then I also know MANY East Coast New England Fans who have a very negative view of PC.

Look, we haven't won any big bowl games since Norm Chow and Coach O left the team. Or am I'm the only fan here that watched the 2006 Rose Bowl? (From the Rose Bowl I might add!) Then I had to read and listen to all of the major sports media outlets do their analysis on USC coaching mistakes. (Am I the only one who pays attention to these things?)

Now the team is going into 2006 with what appears to be a poor passing game. I'm praying that things will improve, but isn't it PC's job to make it happen?

I think PC is a great media guy, and I've been to dinners and listened to him talk; which was great fun.

There is no denial that PC is a great recruiter.

BUT I'm starting to believe that he is just a mediocre coach, and I don’t believe that is what the USC fans want or deserve. This is even ok if the school hires him great assistant coaches, but we appear to be missing those great O coaches to back PC up (just in case you haven't notice, please direct your attention to the current passing stat's).

I hope I’m wrong, and the team improves. But either way, we always need to hold PC accountable.

Fight On!

Rick, that's pretty bad. We're going into the season with RB's that have 0 starts among them. I think Pete was referring to not knowing how the RB's will respond during a real game.

What is coach Holt doing to prepare the D for the hurry up no huddle offense that Gus Malzahn favors and used so effectively at Springdale High? He is on record as saying the Hogs will use it extensively.

Rick has to be kidding. This is college football not pro, if he's for real he needs to move to Sundays.

Well he has brought up some good points. Let's face it, Coach Carroll wasn't even watching the game when Texas was going for their final 2 point conversion because he was in a huddle with the offense. He does need some help he can't do it alone. Having Orgeron and Chow helped alot and we definately miss them. And I have to admit the passing game seems to be poor so far, not to mention the worst special teams in college football.

But I wouldn't write USC into the bottom 20 just yet. Carroll is not a moron.I think we have a disgruntled Patriots fan who still dislikes Coach Carroll.

Rick, what are you drinking?

I've been watching SC football continuously since 1979... and PC is our best head coach since JM... yes even better than JR (the Pac 8/10 was a much weaker conference back then.. no one would have considered the Oregons or WSU as anything more than doormats and practice fodder for the big boys of the league)...

This is a rebuilding year for Troy and PC... its also going to be more "fun" to watch than last year, where every game, starting with the opener against Hawaii, was a high stake playoff game - lose just one and SC's BCS championship goal would have been done...

I think PC learned he was over stretched in the Rose Bowl (I was there too, as well as the Orange Bowl the year before and the RB the year before that)... if you're working the defense while they're on the field you can't really be involved in offense strategy/adjustments discussions going on between the O coaches, and when the defense is off the field you're dealing with their strategy/adjustments and may not be fully in tune with what's working/or not with the Offense.... only so much of PC to go around.

I can't believe anyone in their right mind expects SC to go undefeated given the schedule for this year - after 28 Septembers of watching new players begin their careers at SC, I know it will be a learning experience for the real freshman newbies on the team and JDB at QB... I expect some tough going early and then jelling of the offense around the new QB, with a solid finish and BCS bowl game appearance (just not the big bash in Tempe)... now next year is a different story... returning QB, RBs, WRs, an experienced defense and special teams - a National Title is definitely expected!

Class of '83

Bay Trojan....Please, DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE our team!! They will surprise you. The recruiting game is just about as big as the real game..Just hang on and wait to see what I mean! These kids will amaze you and the nation.

Rick, I sort of side with you, not altogether, but I don't believe in denouncing's right to state an opinion.

As great as USC's offense was last year, it's potential was far greater. Put Chow and Coach 0 at the Rose Bowl and the outcome would have been similar to Orange Bowl.

But I wouldn't call PC just a so-so coach.

He did great job building in 2001 with freshmen and no names. This will be the testing year for him. Last year's talent could cover up but his year cannot. ML was coach on field, this year it will be the staff.

I also agree he should have looked for a great offensive coordinator. But I think the credit Chow got is one reason is he is gone and one reason now PC is taking the challange.

"not to mention the worst special teams in college football"

are you serious. have u seen the stats on our special teams. they're very much improved

Rick did you at anytime pay attention to what happened last year to our defense ??? or for that matter our offensive production?? or are you one of those "open the Sunday paper and read the scores" type of guy? The Offense ( without Chow ) was among the top point scoring and yard producing offenses in the nation. The D while not the most dominant still was able to stifle most teams and help the Trojans to a 12-0 season, WITHOUT most of their starters. Heck at one point we where down to almost a true frosh squad. (look at you starting line up vs Texas in the ONE and ONLY bowl game we did not win since Chow left) check out how many fresh faces and 2nd 3rd 4th stringers played having to fill in for starters on he D......please give the team a break. Believe me have we had all our starters for the Rose Bowl, I am positive we would have notched another W. The young kids that were pushed into the starting lineup vs UT were not ready for that type of game, not against a veteran Texas team like they saw that day.AND they still almost pulled it off !! VY was just too much for them.......The Trojans are reloaded and ready to show their stuff ......stand by

Would Carroll still be over his head if the 4th and 2 was converted? Losing Lendale White and Bush will hurt, no doubt. None of the new guys has played. But I am way more concerned about kickoff coverage than I am about RB's that are highly ranked coming in. They will be fine. Defense needs a guy to step up and make the plays when they really need them. Someone like Tatupu or Polamalu. Carroll is a great coach, just ran into the wrong guy in the title game. No coach could have beat Vince Young in that game, even the genius over in South Bend who singlehandedly started the Ohio State bandwagon for 2006.

Everyone talks fourth and two, but the fullback screen before that was a perfect call by Kiffen that Matt short-armed. Hancock goes for at least fifteen if not TD on that play.
