Pure Speed
It's easy to get fixated on freshmen because they are new faces, but wide receiver Travon Patterson seems ready to assume a vital role. Patterson turned a 5-yard pass into about a 60-yard play and he's clearly the fastest receiver.
"Travon brings something we haven't had in five years,'' offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin said.

"Travon brings something we haven't had in five years!" Does that mean that 6 years ago they had someone faster? Petros maybe?

He's referring to KAREEM KELLY. A former USC SPEED BURNER that also is an alumnus from Long Beach Poly.

six years? Mike Williams, K Colbert, kareem kelly, Chad Morton, RJ Soward, were legendary in college.
What does this kid do that they didn't?

Lane wasn't around 6 years ago. He can't speak to players on the roster 6 years ago.

yeah but none of those guys were real burners on the field

He's referring to the five years that PC has been head coach. Kelly is the last true burner they had. Patterson and Holland are the first true speed options at WR.
Of course, Leinart would not have capitalized on the bombs...but as you see, little routes can become huge routes quickly with a speedy WR. We had Bush the last three years serve this role...now you'll see routes for Bush given to Patterson.
And, Booty and Sanchez both have the arm strength to heave it for Patterson. What a great new dimension to the offense. What team in the country will have the DBs to cover Jarrett, Turner, Hazelton and Patterson? And throw in Fred Davis to boot.

Coach Kiffin is referring merely to having speedy receivers. Mike Williams, although probably the greatest receiver in USC history IMO, lacked speed. He relied on superior size down field. DJ is like that, too. Big with good hands, but not super fast.
Since Kareem Kelly graduated, we have lacked a true speedster at WR. However, that is not to say that we haven't had maybe the best WR corp in football since.
I could be wrong. I'm just a fat guy that drinks beer and watches from the bleachers.
I LOVE USC! DO YOU LOVE USC???
IN PETE WE TRUST!!!

All Kiffin said was that this is the fifth season since a pure speed-burner like Kareem Kelly played. Mike Williams wasn't a speed burner, nor was Colbert, and the other guys were more than five years ago.

It's a well known fact that the one thing USCs offense has been missing (if you can even say that with a straight face) is a true burner WR. In some ways they didn't miss it because Reggie often played that role but with Holland and Patterson they now have two. Imagine a 4 WR set with Jarett, Smith, Turner and Patterson/Holland. No secondary in CFB could cover all those guys...the WR recruiting at USC has been ridiculous.

Tyler, the Linebacker recruiting is just as impressive. We've got some true speed demons there.
Let's turn that "Pig Sooooo-ey" into Chop Suey. Kill those Hogs! Then those farmer boys from Nebraska! Can't wait to see North Hollywood's Marlon Lucky get gobbled up by our LBs.

You think with all those WR's and receiving backs that it might also open up the rushing game for Chauncey, Coleman and the entire Freshman class?

Mike Williams the greatest reciever in SC history. He had a couple geat years but he skipped his senior season. Besides, did you forget about Lynn Swan?
Posted by: george | August 11, 2006 02:53 PM
Wow mention some of usc finest receivers and everyone has something to say. RJ Soward was faster then Kareem Kelly if anyone remembers... Lynn Swan was on our roster 6 years ago george. I do agree he was one of the best all time.

Wil Buchanan was a 4.3 guy who played WR for us the last 2 years (switched from CB). He actually looked good in the preseason game as a Raider. However, he didn't get much playing time in college as he had problems with dropsies, route running, and getting timing down with ML on deep routes.
I think TP is the highest quality receiver we've had in recent years with sub-4.4 speed. He'll definitely bring a speed dimension that our receiving corps have lacked the last several years.
