STEFON JOHNSON-TO SAFETY..........
He's lost in the crowd at running back, but is a future All-American at safety. Move him now before it is too late in the season. He hits like a brick trust me.... With Tyler and Green coming in his future is at Safety.

This team will get better and better in 06 despite two losses, and win a national title in 07. You know the truth Wolf man. The first loss will be at Arizona, and then we roll all the way through a title in 07.

check out the godfather PC moving the chess pieces around. I like this kid Mays. he's big (6'4 225) considering his blistering speed. wasn't he state champ in track up in washington?

Garrett Green the speed machine is 2nd on depth chart already. the stars seem to be in alignment for this kid, he seems to play smart. I learned alot about Green thanks to this blog, and to see him keep up with our own hi-calibur receivers is reassuring. trust PC or get out.

Mays had a point when he said that after practicing against the best in Jarrett, Smith, Turner & CO. that now he can handle anything.

let's hope he's right. otherwise the Children of the Corn will eat him.

Two losses? First at UA?

What?

Try 13-0 this year. We will win both games in AZ.

Fight On!

Whoever says move S. Johnson to Safety has a closed head injury. We have a ton of safety's already-Garrett Green,Antwine Perez, Taylor Mays, Moz McCurtis, Josh Pinkard, Kevin Thomas..all with years to go at USC. BUT, AS WE HAVE SEEN, RB's can be at a premium because they get injured and losing a good RB can kill a team. Losing a good Safety, well......

Jeff Schweiger was a BIG TIME recruit out of high school. I mean, PRIME TIME. The next sackmaster of the NFL, guaranteed. For whatever reason, he has never panned out at USC. The different line coaches he has had? Playing next to other talented guys? Who knows. But I doubt he will transfer. He is a Junior. If he transfers to another I-A school he can't play next year. He could transfer to a I-AA team like.....oh crap forgot his name who is at Northern Iowa now. Kinda don't see that happening.....

I agree that it would be GREAT to have Stafon on defense, even if he is a great prospect at RB. this guy ran a 10.67 in high school and both McCurtis and Green are in that range. Mays ran a blistering 10.48! With this sort of speed on the safety depth chart combined with the LB speed we are the fastest D in the nation.

This Houston Press excerpt from preseason '05 might tell you something about speed and what it did last year (damn it!):
Houston Press
September 2 2005

"It's not uncommon for a team's cornerbacks to run 100 meters in 10 seconds. How about both of the safeties, too?

Safety Michael Huff of Irving Nimitz ran 10.59 in the 100 at the Michael Johnson Invitational in the spring. Texas' other safety, Michael Griffin, ran 10.64 in the 100 meters in high school.

QB Vince Young, RB/WR Ramonce Taylor, RB Jamaal Charles, TE David Thomas and WR Jordan Shipley all have exceptional speed (running under 11 seconds in the 100 meters). Jamaal Charles is the Big 12 100 meter champion. He was also the high school state 5A hurdles champion at 110 and 300 meters. Quan Cosby was the 2001 2A state dash champion (100 and 200 meters). Limas Sweed was an all-state hurdler in high school with the third fastest state time in the 110 Intermediate Hurdles.

"You can't tackle what you can't catch," Taylor said."

Yeah the guy Stafon is fast. He actually cornerback fast and we are thin there. I know Pete Carroll likes big buys that can jam and tackle these bigger receivers but are fast enough to keep up with the smaller or faster guys. But we also need a really fast guy to come through in the backfield and he is the fastest guy there. But if what Scott says is true, all the talent in the world want make up for bad blocking and lapses in effort. Sounds like he's getting it straight and acting responsible about it by acknowledging and doing better. All this speed talk makes me wonder how Jamere is doing. Didn't he have a surgery on that collar bone???

Patrick is sort of right. I think that just because Stafon was a top recruit in that spot (as well as RB) that it is easy to imagine he should be there. We are still an injury away from being thin at RB not safety. RB's go down so often, we are working with three freshmen and a junior with a lingering injury in what is usually a two or three half back rotation. Hell, our FB is the primary pass catcher out of the backfield.

However, it would be misleading to look at the list Pat offered. Pinkard is out for the year, Kevin Thomas is locked in at Cornerback not a Safety unless I missed something, and the rest are newbies at the position. McCurtis is a transfer of course who will have to be moved over to Safety from Corner though we may need him there if injury is an issue.

We had a Corner injury during the UA game and we are thin there which is troubling; we haven't been that great in the position up to this point.

Hopefully Mays, Perez, Green and Buehler (???) can do what we need as safeties without rookie errors. Perez is such a hitter despite being so light and the rest have tremendous size and speed. McCurtis gives us the chance to have a speedy ballhawk safety with size and more experience.

Ah, looking at the fresh talent, this defense could be great for years to come.

38-2 since '03!!!

Anonymous guy, I wish I had posted that. But I don't want to be reminded about the Rose Bowl. Still I think Pete has more than made up for any problems we had with defensive speed with this recruiting class. Texas w all that D speed still could barely keep up with SC's O speed. My God USC is good...
