Defensive End Log Jam
Here's an update from today's paper on Jeff Schweiger.
USC defensive end Jeff Schweiger met with Coach Pete Carroll to discuss his diminished role with the defense this season.
Schweiger, one of the most sought-after defensive ends in the country three years ago, barely played against Arkansas because the Trojans switched linebacker Brian Cushing to defensive end and Schweiger’s also fallen behind sophomore Kyle Moore.
``I talked to (Carroll) and kind of feel better,’’ Schweiger said. ``He just said, `Keep competing.’ ’’
Schweiger said he is not unhappy at USC but wanted to know what he could do to increase his playing time. One problem is that he weighs just 245 pounds after suffering food poisoning in training camp. He weighed 270 when he entered camp last year.
That means he’s a smaller alternative than Moore, when lining up against the tight end. And he’s not as adept at pass coverage as Cushing, because of his linebacker training.
``I like USC,’’ Schweiger said. ``I just want to get better.’’

Holy hell!! Is this an actual posting without an ulterior motive. Are you sure Schweiger isn't unhappy at USC Scott? 'Cause I think you might want to revise that if you really want to get us fans up in arms.
Pete can't start playing D-linemen that weigh 245lbs - the Dline is already generating little pass rush as is. Does Schweiger want to get run over - especially with us going to run happy Arkansas in the first game. They would have run every play to his side if Pete had played him. I would think that had Schweiger been at his playing weight we would have seen a lot more of him and less of the Elephant package. After all Pete used him a lot last year - why would he suddenly have a motive to not play him. We all know Pete is a 4-3 man at heart.
This is shocking...what's come over you Scott?
I really hope Jeff gets it together and becomes a factor this year. I really enjoyed watching him as a Freshman. He seemed to bring a lot of energy to the D. He reminded me of a wild colt that just need to be trained a little.
There's still time. He is only one game into his Junior year.
Fight On Jeff!!!
This is not shocking...Tyler needs a life.
It's called tongue-in-cheek - omg. Chill. I rarely have a problem with Scott's reporting. It was intended to make fun of the "conspiracy theorists" that are convinced Scott is trying to single-handedly bring down USC.
Jef S. is a crybaby. He is going up to PC cryinmg for playing time when he isn't good? WTF is wrong with him? YOu have to be good and he isn't. He missed his assigment against ARK in the last series with Mustain and it resulted in a 40 yard gain. He is the Whitney Lewis of the defense.
Schweiger needs to make plays. He's been a lot of hype, and little substance. Some of these kids who were high school stars think college stardom will be handed to them. Not true. Schweiger needs to get committed to the program, work hard, and make plays. So far, he's been a bust.
