Mistaken Identity
USC committed three illegal formation penalties against Arkansas and offensive tackle Kyle Williams was cited by the officials, but assistant coach Pat Ruel said Williams was not at fault.
Ruel said offensive guard Chilo Rachal kept lining up a step behind where he was supposed to, forcing Williams to also step back.
`After the first time I told Chilo to move up and he did, but for just two plays. The second time it happened I blew a gasket on the sideline,’’ Ruel said. ``The third time it was Krakatoa.’’

Pat’s a funny guy, but I don’t get why everyone on message boards and the media totally romanticizes him- he never does anything wrong- ever, and no one ever criticizes his controversial decisions (Byers), his inability to recruit, develop young raw players, or fix a small mistake which completely stalled our early drives. Well let me be the first to criticize our SACRED COW.
We have a season long problem with Kyle Williams, which should have NEVER happened and been dealt with during spring and fall camps (see DT Barrett and DLine coach Holt for an example of good coaching and preparation). Pat has got to actually do some college coaching i.e., get Herring and Brown to mature, focus, be highly motivated and step up their game to dominate on Saturdays. I don’t see him having those skills to develop raw inexperienced athletes, which is what we desperately need in our OLine coach. The coaches at ND got Harris and Young to start in their first year, am I to assume we do not have the same level of talent as ND?
This guy is an NFL coach who can’t develop players, recruit, or fix a simple line of scrimmage penalty from occurring again. Why? His skill set needs first round picks who are already motivated and have great technique to come in for him to coach them- that’s not college coaching. ND and UCLA has an edge on us, and its Pat Reul. Pat is second string on the coaching depth chart at SC, behind the big boys who fire them up, develop them into greatness, and recruit like the dickens. I put him in the same category as the Tings. But he is funny…Krakatoa, that’s a great line.
funny comments by Ruehl ... OL ... the 'thinking man's' position - outside of QB.
All Hail "Don Carrolleone" ... he makes it happen ...
38-2 since '03!!! ... best program in the Nation, period.
I was wondering about those calls. After watching how Kyle lined up I looked at how Arkansas lined up and saw them doing the same thing (lining up farther backs from the center). It just seemed the flags came after USC had a big third down play. Oh well, USC won by over 30 anyways.
Thanks for posting this, Scott. It's GREAT to here what really happened on those plays, and what was done to fix it.
Yeah, I kept waiting for one of the ESPN chuckleheads to notice that #78 was called THREE times for the same penalty, but they were too busy talking about yet another Arkansas potential moral victory on the drive.
I have never been high on Rachal. He is a back up, at best. He was a 2 star recruit (scout.com) which is not a whole lot. Alatini Malu is no better. hell put Thomas Herring in there!
the real question is what's with the mustache...
How do you not crack up everytime he's talking to you....

Great comment. Announcers, instead of just reporting the game, frequently end up grinding a personal axe. Like they get stuck on a mental rut and get let go of some "point" they feel we have to know, particularly when that team is getting killed.
Pat Ruel= Sacred Cow.
