Pete Carroll played at USC?

| | Comments (4) |

In Nebraska's press relelase this week, it says, ``Coach Pete Carroll (USC, 1973) is in his sixth season as USC head coach after returning to his alma mater from a 16-year stay in the NFL."
Carroll actually played football at Pacific.

Having played quarterback, Pete Carroll threw the decisive pass in the Trojans' win over Nebraska in 1970. His illegitimate son, John David Carroll Booty, currently starts at QB for USC.

This is stupid but not nearly as idiotic as the comments made by offensive "coordinator" Lane Kiffin in the LA Times this morning.

How dumb could Little Lane be?

Here's part of his lunacy regarding his atrocious play call on fourth-and-two in the Rose Bowl:

"Yeah, I've heard about that play a lot this summer," Kiffin said. "And, yeah, most of it was about Reggie Bush."

"In all the million scenarios I've drawn up for that play, not once do I have Reggie Bush on the field," he said. "What, you have him lined up as a receiver? They're not going to cover him. Their defensive backs were pressing. They know we're going to run it there."

Geez, I sure hope that scenario No. 1,000,001 included Bush going in motion or lining up in the slot. Is Lane really that stupid/stubborn to not even consider having Bush on the field? What kind of "coach" doesn't find ways to get his best players on the field to improve his team's chances of success?

And Lane ... if they KNOW you are going to run the football, then you should pass. What kind of preschool play caller is this guy?

He thinks they aren't going to cover REGGIE BUSH?!?!?! OK, Lane ... I disagree. And so did Longhorn safety Michael Huff, who said after the game that if Bush was in the game as a potential receiver he would NOT have been in position to finish off Lendale White short of the first down.

Who do you trust? A guy who would have carried out a vital defensive responsibility on that play ... or a guy who claims that a defense wouldn't cover a Heisman Trophy winner and can't seem to come up with one scenario in a million that includes one of the most dangerous players in college football history.

THEN, according to article, Lane went on to say that he wonders if he should have "changed the snap count to set the Longhorns' defenders back" or "should have ordered Matt Leinart to run a bootleg" ... OH ... MY ... GOODNESS!!!

I have to keep reminding myself that this guy is actually employed by one of the top college football programs in the nation.

One of his last quotes in the article was:

"We had all that offensive talent, and we needed to get one more first down for the national championship, two more yards, and I couldn't do it."

That's right Lane, "all that offensive talent" ... but the most talented guy watched that play from the sidelines ... where you think he belonged ... when his team needed him the most.

Enough is enough! Chances at national championships don't come around too often. Lane better shape up ... or just keep his stupid mouth shut.

You should have blasted Mr. Kiffin also for his public unethical, classless bashing of the WR's including Dwane Jarrett.

Totally agree with you guys. Lane Kiffin is not only a moron, but he's stubborn and wrongly arrogant. Never thought of using Reggie Bush on that play? Maybe, Kiff, you're not stupid, you're just BSing everyone, but you'll have to live with that call for the rest of your life. Norm Chow, Norm Chow, Norm Chow. Because you refuse to 'fess up that you messed up on that play, Chow's the man you'll always fall short of. No Reggie Bush, hah! And keep WR criticisms in-house. Dale Carnegie wasn't a football coach, but you could learn a thing or two from him: Never correct or criticize someone in public, or he'll resent you for life.

An episode of "The Sopranos" comes to mind. When Silvio and Tony are discussing whether or not to whack a rival gangster:

Silvio: I truly don't believe, there's anything to gain, by keeping this guy around.

Tony: (beat) Get it done.

God, I wish that were Coach Carroll and Mr. Garrett having that conversation. Maybe, maybe, one day.

Fight On, despite Brain Cramp Kiff on the headsets. Beat those 'Holers!
