Trojan Nation

I've long suspected that new band/student seating area in the end zone would be a horrible place to be situated for a game, despite a glowing letter from band director Art Bartner in last weekend's game program.
But why take my word for it? Listen to student Matt Barrett, who attended this week's meeting about the student-ticket problems.
``You can't tell the difference between a three-yard gain and a 30-yard pass,'' Barrett said.

Not a bad ticket for free.

Take it from someone used to endzone seating, you get used to it and eventually figure it out

Last year's home games all had between 90,000 and 92,000 in attendance.

Steve Lopes claims that at most 7500 out of 12,000 reserved students seats were used during the 2005 season.

So if every seat in the stadium was used except for the missing students, at most attendance numbers should be 86,500. Hmm Steve, make up some more numbers for us that make sense. Thanks.

Nor can anyone see song girls or band from side of field.

I actually enjoy that you can see them run their routes and watch the play form.

I think I'd feel more comfortable about your assessment if you got more than one source.

What do you mean for free? This is apparently what students are left with after their 35k tuition plus the 135 dollar spirit card!

Well that's how us Major Donors feel at the Rose Bowl for UCLA and Bowl Games, and if you don't pony up $2500, that's the same view most Season Ticket holders get... So I would not complain.

One thing they should consider it replacing the benches around the peristyle end of the Coliseum and moving visiting team fans there, opening up regular seating for studets, etc. It could add maybe up to 8000 seats, though they'd lose some ad revenue.

from the tone of the students, i'm surprised that matt accepted anything less than a 50 yarder about 20 rows up....Matt/usc students..."life's a bitch and then you die" get use to it....sorry!!

Endzone is not a bad place to see game. BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE BINOCS. And good ones. 8x50 or better. The second number is key. That is the width of vision. I am not talking about those binocs that you fill with booze.

I sit in the endzone too. Just watch the scoreboard/JUMBOTRON...wait the band doesn't face that way. haha

I have sat there before and it is actually not that bad unless you are right inline with a goal post.

I think moving the band there looks good asthetically. They filled up the whole middle of the section.

The sound system sucked though. It was jittery but I could here them on the sidelines.

I feel real sorry for the spirit of Troy getting shoved aside and stuck in that pathetic excuse for a sundeck on the east endzone. When is someone in Coliseum management or in USC athletic administration going to realize that AL Davis and the silver & crap are forever gone and the Coliseum itself is awaiting to revert back to the way it used to look. I remember my first USC football game when the track was still a part of Trojan lore. Whenever USC scored a touchdown, Traveler would make his way all the way around the field. Coliseum officials, its time to get rid of that stinkin' sundeck, center the field, redo the seats on the peristyle end and maybe, as a bonus reinsert the track. Its time to return the beauty of the Coliseum back to Trojan faithful and the city of Los Angeles.

I prefer the endzone where I could see plays open up . I wasn't blocked from seeing the opposite end of the field when fans stood up as a play developed, especially in a tying or win situation. Down low on the side, I couldn"t always see because of returning players or celebs on the sideline by team bench. Also we use to get some characters like Gypsy Boots who would liven up proceedings.

At least the band/Bartner got asked if they wanted to move to the end zone, and "officially" approved the move. They also were highly compensated for giving up their seats for the end zone, and knew this was happening since July.

Students and Student Government were not asked or compensated for their move, despite the fact that in 2005 the Athletic pledged to never alter any spirit card/student lottery/student athletic issues without the support of Student Government. They found out about this move just days before the home opener.

Someone on this board previously stated some of the costs on a band trip so let's estimate $200,000 for 350 go to Chicago with 3 nights of Hotel, 7 buses from USC to the LAX, O'hare to downtown Chicago and to Notre Dame and back plus meals. So do the math for the 12,000 student spirit card holders, and find that the spirit card holders should be getting $6.85 million. Add in some factor of 2-10 since students actually would prefer their traditional seats over selling themselves out like Art.
