A Quiet Monday Night

| | Comments (29) |

It was a bye week, so coaches have more free time than usual. That suited USC coach Pete Carroll on Monday night, who simultaneously watched Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart throw two touchdown passes while eating dinner, since he didn't have to immediately dive into practice films like during a game week.
Carroll let out a couple big yells in his office when Leinart threw his second touchdown pass and quickly said, ``now run out the clock.'' Alas, the Cardinals weren't fortunate enough to hold on in their 24-23 loss to the Chicago Bears.
But it's safe to say Carroll's enthusiasm watching Leinart was genuine and true. And maybe reminded him of how low-maintenance the quarterback position was most of the past three seasons.

ALL those who stated JDB can/could do this that better than Leinart. You know whom you are. BTW I stated that a couple of days ago. Carson Palmer and Leinart is a different story...

Matt Leinart looked solid to me in this game, just like he played at USC. After watching this game I think Dennis Green should turn those fingers that he is pointing back towards his own chest. He had the oppurtunity at the end with plenty of time to take some shots and get closer to the end zone and he chose to run 2 plays up the middle with Edgerin James who had basically been shut down the entire night. You play not to lose and you usually lose, only 1 win on the year give your boys a chance Leinart and the Cardinals defense played a great game. This also shows something that Carroll said earlier this year about Booty, that he Booty doesn't understand the game like Leinart does and that is the difference in the two.

SeaTrojan said:

Sure he looked good. But Booty can make so many throws that Leinart can't. Right, coaches?

I think all Trojan fans had the same reaction to the TD passes, I know I did

It's quirky articles like this that make you worth reading Wolfie. It illustrates Carroll's personality as a father-figure / coach. He developed Leinert from a kid out of Mater Dei in the OC, to watching him win National Championships, bang Paris Hilton, and then play in the NFL on MNF while eating dinner. All in that order.

Carroll's track record is why some of us haven't completely given up on John David Booty. Carson Palmer looked horrible the first half of his first season. Oh yeah, he's in the NFL too, my pessimistic brothers.

To the homers I say then again, that was with Master Chow helping him out. So we will judge at the end of the season based on results -- often harsh but always fair. There's alot of freshmen to depend on this year, including coaches. But that doesn't mean you have to act like your'e on your period if we don't stamp 50 on the scoreboard, my spoiled friends.

This is still the best college football dynasty on earth.

If you don't like it, then may a chili-fed Rosie O'Donnell find relief on your L.A. Times paper.

Matt,

You should have applied for a sixth and seventh year of eligibility. We miss your ability to throw 10+ yard passes and actually scan the field for open receivers without staring down your first option. Come back to a winning program where your talents will not be wasted.

Pete said:

Not a good day to ber Neil Rackers, I'd wager.

I thought Leinart looked terrific, but they need to take the wrap off of him and let him do what he does more. Charles Barkely was right: they needed to stay aggressive. Instead, Denny Green went all Shottenheimer conservative with his play calling, and the rest is MNF history.

I have just learned that Jim Fassel Baltimore Ravens OC was fired. For those of you who are asking for Norm Chow, well Mr. Fassel is NOT that far. He is well respected and considered a great QB's coach. PC should consider him.

what a debacle that game was last night. arizona's line is just awful. leinart getting blindside. edge has to be the worst free agent signing in quite some time - but that probably has a lot to do with the line. 36 carries for 55 yards.

The quarterback position was low maintenance before Leinart got there.

So I'm not a huge arizona cardinal's fan but I like to follow my former USC football players and Matt Leinart couldn't have played a better game! However, ALL of that success had to be ruined by the playcalling of Dennis "moron" Green. Matt Leinart had the Cards driving down the field and could have led them all the way for a score but Dennis Green had to play "not to lose" instead of to WIN. He chose to give the ball to Edgerrin James (who is a great running back) who HAD THE WORST GAME IN THE HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE!!! No joke, he actually set a record for the most carries (36) with the fewest yards (55). Dennis Green called 2 running plays to pick up 2 measly yards, fully knowing that The Edge could not run the ball against the Bears D. It became apparent that coach Green was going to play for the field goal when the crowd could see that the cards were making no effort to stop the clock. However, the moron called 2 running plays to the LEFT HASHMARK. I'm no genius, but if you know you are going to play for the field goal, wouldn't you want to run to the center of the field to give your kicker the best chance possible? I can place no blame on anyone but him and the man should be fired. It is a disgrace that Cardinal's fans had to go through this abomination.

This blog is a good read for entertainment value alone if nothing else.

Jim Fassell to USC as OC???? The guy has taken a team to a Super Bowl as a HEAD COACH in the NFL!!! You ahve to be completely insane to think he is coming back to college as a coordinator. This guy would have several offers in the League as a coordinator if he wants to stay there and would get multiple offers as a head coach if he wanted to return to college.

Just curious if anyone knows where he spent some time as a Asst. in college? And I didn't read the link so I don't know if it is in there. Hint it's a Pac-10 school with a bit of tradition...

I hope Cushing and Rey watched the game as well and studied Urlacher and Briggs. That's how you play linebacker in the cover 2.

I just love faithful Trojan fans who can do nothing better than take a great showing by Leinart and just bash Booty. A faithful Trojan fan stands behind the players. If you want to direct criticism, call out the coaches.

Stephanie said:

There are some amateur fans here (see the first two posts). And if they are fans, they started watching the men of Troy in 2002. Booty does not suck. This is his first year and he is going to have some valleys. Luckily, they are not costing SC games. He is still a bit hesitant and he - as all young QBs - has a hard time going through his progressions when his confidence is lacking. That said, he hasn't made a ton of mistakes. His WRs have not been consistently there to practice so the timing is off. The play calling has been too intuitive for defenses thus creating pressure and good coverage. Don't put it all on the QB. If you do, you don't know football at all.

For those of you who ACTUALLY think Palmer wasn't similar to Booty (one speed thrower, can't look past his first receiver, etc.) in his first FOUR years (he played five for those amateurs), you only remember his last year. Truth is, Palmer made too many errors (39 INTs before his senior campaign). He was a QB with a major gun who had trouble changing his speeds and frankly, he telegraphed his first 800 passes... each one of them! He finally started clicking in the second half of his JUNIOR season (fourth year starting, BTW - amateurs) but was non existant in the Vegas Bowl. He threw 6 INTs in his first 3 games against the Irish. C'mon goofballs, wake up.

The reality is that it is too early to assess Booty. There is no big playmaker out there to take the pressure off him. He has not practiced consistently with the same receivers. Hopefully, SC will get back to its roots.. run power football... force the defensive alignment in the box... and allow for a vertical game, play actions, etc. Kiffin does not have Bush and he neds to realize how special that situation was. The reality is that Bush was MAKING big plays out of short crossing patterns and sweeps. We get 5 yards today, Bush got 75 yards. Big difference. Pete is learning too. It will be fine.

I am not fan of Kiffin. I thought Norm Chow was the reason for all the years leading up to this one. I mean, Matt called audibles 33% of the time at the line. Booty is far from having that control. Until then, he is beholden to the play calling from up above.

I have been a real fan for all 32 years of my life. I had a Marcus Allen Jersey instead of a Brownie outfit. You people are limited in your thinking. You must have never been through what real SC fans have. We have LONG memories. We remember what Palmer was prior to Chow. We remember Hackett. Go cheer for another team please before they lose a game. I want them to win, but I will be proud for whatever they do. Amateur idiots. You are little boys with no knowledge of the game. Be supportive or stop being a bandwagon geek, please! Be Supportive. You two are laughable.

Thank you Davey. Some of the fans here are retarded. There is no other way to say it. Fassel as OC at USC!! Come on.

Oh and BTW if we bring in Fassel you can say goodbye to a lot of our recruits (and probaby a few existing players)especially on offense. They didn't sign on/aren't coming here to run Fassel's weak ass offensive schemes. They are coming here to run the PC/Norm Chow scheme that was installed in the past few years. That is unless in your delusion you have convinced yourself that Fassel would come to USC to run the existing system.

StDylan said:

Fassel was an assistant as Stanford when Elway was playing. I think he was also the head coach at Utah.

If you told me five years ago I'd be glued to the tube to watch the Bengals, Cards and Saints games I would've thought you were crazy! Now it allows us to see why SC has been so dominant since PC's arrival - awesome players!

John David Booty is doing a great job for his first season - just as good if not better than Leinart or Palmer their first seasons. Just give him time and consistant receivers!

RE: Fassel
Davey:
You are right, WHY should he consider CFB?:
1. He does NOT have anything to lose and a lot to gain.
2. Let's say he is hired as a consultant for just this season. He gets a good chunk of change plus his NFL OC salary and back home in Southern CA. He is done in January. Remember the draft is in April so he would be in a position to consider other jobs for both CFB and the NFL. It is NOT that bad for a four and a half months job.
3. It is up to you guys there to make noise about this [IF]{big if}PC likes the idea. He has total control...
4. JDB and MS can use ALL the help they can get. WHY passed on Fassel who is [AVAILABLE]? Fassel is considered a great QB's coach among the best of them.
5. It makes sense; I just don't get paid to think pretty and ambitious!

WOW! Another arrogant Trojan fan, who can dish it out, but can't take it. If Chow was so great, why did the QB have to change one third of the play calls? I think Pete Carroll is the reason the Trojans are in this position. In defending Booty, and trashing Kiffen, Palmer, Hackett, and USC fans, you don't seem to accept other peoples opinions (right or wrong) very well. Palmer had to play in Hackett's program for three years, and then start over with a new system/staff. Leinart has a brilliant football mind to go with his physical ability. Booty is not there yet (to change plays at the line). He has to learn to throw in the open lanes, or forget the three step drop, because of his natural, three-quarter arm delivery, (and more out of the shotgun) to eliminate the blocked passes. I'm sure the coaches know the problems. I think he is going to do fine, and it is unfair to compare him with Palmer or Leinart. They were two of the greatest QB's in college history. It is also unfair to tear down other players or coaches or fans in defense of his ability. One question...what is a amateur fan? I did not know some fans got paid. I do know ALL fans have a right to their own opinion.

To Stephanie-- You go girl!! From a fellow lifetime USC fan-42 years and counting, who went to ugla for grad school, and who saw Swann and AD back in the day, I completley agree with your latest posting. How many teams in a legitimate rebuilding year are 6-0!!!????? Let's be patient and see how this season unfolds for this extremely talented but young team. The injuries and criticism they are dealing with now can only make them that much more resilient in the future. For all of us who remember Tollner, Smith, John Robinson round 2, and Hackett, I can honestly say, "In Pete We Trust!!"

Loved seeing all the Leinart nay-sayers eating crow Monday night. Even the sports radio guys admitted they were WRONG. As one of them said: You can't teach poise. He looked GREAT, just like watching him last year. But we all knew what he could do didn't we? Congrats to him!!

Only concern for USC this year: Apparent lack of improvement week to week and not many adjustments at halftime. Those were one of the main reasons we had bigger wins the past few years. Maybe this bye and a couple of lesser opponents (if USC ever gets one of those considering their SC game is their bowl game) will allow the team to get healthy and some rhythm going.
