Big Shoes
John David Booty knows he’s got some big shoes to fill right now, especially after his roughest game of the season.
``Matt (Leinart) had to follow one (great quarterback) and I had to follow two,’’ Booty said. ``But I want to be a great player too.’’
Here’s how Booty and Leinart’s stats compare after five games of their first seasons.
Booty 119-182, 241.8 ypg, 65.4 percent, 11 TDs, 3 INT, 137.83 efficiency
Leinart 85-147 242.6 ypg, 57.8 percent, 10 TDs, 7 INT, 140.06 efficiency

If you compare Booty and Leinart one more time I am going to scream. Get a new story!!!!!!!!!!!!
Scott:
I made note of this before but I it should be becoming more and more obvious to all.
Booty is not playing well and his states are misleading.
1) Most of his completions are short passes - on far too many occasions he passes short when he has a man open down field. Even on third downs he’ll often pass to a receiver well short of the first down marker - it seems just to get the ball out of his hands.
2) Often he is staring down the receiver he is going to…. Seldom does he go through the reads especially on pressure downs.
3) There are at least eight passes that should have been intercepted this year, two yesterday on USC’s last drive alone.
Your breakdown of the stats does not tell the whole story. I would like to see a distance breakdown along with a third down (success-not just completion) breakdown. Also no matter how you or others want to color it Washington, Washington State and Arizona are not great teams so Booty’s struggles have not yet cost USC a loss yet but against a good team it will.
Look he can make some good passes but he just doesn’t put it all together. USC has a great team but Booty is holding them down. Heck I could complete 90 percent of the passes if all I was willing to do is make little two and three yard dinkers. I would also look cool and collected in the process.
DB
Booty is doing a great job!
i'm confused here. how is leinart's efficiency rating higher if JD has more completions, a higher percentage, more TDs, and less INTs? is YPG that big of a deal when calculating efficiency? matt has less than 1 YPG more than booty and thats the only category he's beating him by.
Amazing how the gunslinger has lower efficiency (and fewer yards per attempt and completion) than the guy who couldn't make all the throws. And Booty has one more year in the system than Leinart did when he first started. But more importantly, is John-David signing more autographs than Leinart did at a comparable time?
it's hard to understand how Leinart could have a higher efficiency rating with a completion percentage almost 8% below Booty and with a 10-7 TD-Int ratio compared to Booty's 11-3.
Leinart and Booty avg essentially the same. Booty has attempted more passes and completed a higher percentage. not sure how that efficiency rating is calculated, but something is fishy there.
Mr. Wolf:
First of all I need the passing yards for both players. Secondly there is NO way that Leinart's Rate is higher than Booty even though is marginally. I know how to calculate the rate and the main factor that drives the passing efficiency rate down is the interception factor. According to your quoted stats Leinart has way more Int's. than Booty. In order to maintain a passing efficiency rate constant you need at least 3TD passes for every interception, otherwise the passing efficiency rate decreases fast and furious. Steve Young was great at having way more TD passes and few Int's.
Can someone provide me the passing yards for both players?
Thnx
Matt Leinart didn't stare down WR forever though. Matt leinart had the advantage of having Norm Chow as his OC but JDb is stuck with Lane Kiffin who will hopefully be looking for a new job because he and whoever is calling plays is bad..
This situation reminds me of when Cristiano Ronaldo took over for David Beckham at Manchester United ... and in the end, after all kinds of worry and discussion ... John David will end up being a superior player (perhaps not in terms of winning percentage, but a better quarterback), just as Cristiano is.
Beat Wigan!
Why not include their respective team records?
Booty - (5-0)
Leinart - (4-1)
Without looking it up, I'd say Booty's passing yards are 1209 (241.8*5) and Leinart's are 1213 (242.6*5). I don't know anything about calculating the QB rating but Leinart's advantage could be because he has the same yardage and only 1 fewer TD with a lot fewer completions and attempts. Gettin' more from less sounds pretty efficient to me.
As a Trojan alum, it is with great regret that I am forced to concede that Oregon and Cal will crush SC this time around...
Don't concede anything TROJAN ALUM. Those games are 5 and 6 weeks away. Take a saucer of warm milk and lie down.
RE: Passing Efficiency Rate(PER)/Big Shoes
To: 2010Trojan, Skip
Using the NFL PER this is what I calculated:
JD Booty-97.5 PER
Matt Leinart-87.5 PER
I know this is the college level but it does NOT make any difference because I used the same formula for both. Secondly it clearly shows that Leinart's rate is much lower because of the higher Interceptions number.
Both formulas can be found under QB efficiency in the google search engine.
Exactly gereboy... in PC we trust! IT aint over, til the game is played, and PC is batting over 950 the last 4 years.
JDB is a superstar in training. Don't underestimate him. Once he corrects the mechanics in his arm trajectory then he'll avoid tips at the line. His accuracy is laser-like and he throws line-drives.
He'll have his moment to shine.
Reign it.
Thanks for the pep talk gereboy. I'm just used to/spoiled by the well-oiled monster of a Division I football team that was USC football circa 2003, 2004 and 2005. By the way, warm milk ain't that bad...

FYI:
Please go to:

Plug in the values and click [compute it].
You must have:
Completed passes, passes attempted, yards, TD's and Int's.
Finally, yes Leinart's rating is {marginally} higher than Booty's.
