Keeping It Close
Of all the stats thrown about regarding the Pete Carroll era, I consider this the most impressive: Carroll's lost just one game by more than 10 points (26-15 to Notre Dame in 2001) in six years.
Even down 33-10 to Oregon State, Carroll somehow avoided getting blown out for the first time in his career. Compare that to the legendary Joe Paterno, who already this season lost by 24 points (Notre Dame) and 22 points (Ohio State).
Or self-proclaimed legend Charlie Weis, who was beaten by 26 points by Michigan last month.

Very excellent points Scott. Hopefully the bandwagon like Redcorn realizes how lucky we are and how myopic some Trojan fans are.
Obviously it's a bad loss for the Trojans, but their TOTAL MARGIN of LOSS for all losses in the last 4 years is 8. On the other hand, UCLA was blown out by 22 at home just last night. If we fix the turnover problem and go +10 in the last 5 games we win out.
It is is nice to talk about the big comeback but all of these yards came against a pretty bad Beaver team playing soft coverage. Could we have mounted a similar comeback against a top 15 team?
Self proclaimed legend Charlie Weis? When did he make that claim?
Great point, Scott. It's the team reflecting the personality of the coach.
And I'd bet I wasn't the only one who once Fred Davis made it 33-16, was sure USC would get it to overtime and get the win.
Lets see, Pete Carroll and our Trojans have lost three games in three and one-half years by a combined total of 8 points;
Lets see how the rest of the season shakes out.
This is the first time though that a PC team has been down by 23 and this team is regressing.
It has gone down hill in each and every game this year and the schedule gets tougher, its highly possible that the margin of defeat record gets increased by Cal and or ND and possibly the Ducks
It is heartbreaking to lose, especially to an unranked OSU. Both it proves that if you are -4 on turnovers and give up a punt return for a TD you really put yourself in a deep hole.
My two frustrations with the season are (1) the coaches seem to be calling plays to 'not lose' games as opposed to calling plays to 'win' games, and (2) since the Nebraska game both the coaches and players seem to lack a sense of urgency.
When down 33-10 and the playcalling becoming more aggressive, the team looked impressive.
Hopefully this loss will address these issues and the team can come out fighting for the rest of the season. We can still win the Pac 10 (completely under our control) and hopefully be in the national championship hunt (unfortunately we no longer control this - and will need some holp).
FIGHT ON!
Who gives a crap. A loss is a loss. Point differentials are for people who bet money and excuse makers.
Considering the fact that they have had the #1 recruiting class the last 3 years, and good coaches like Pete Carroll and Rocky Seto and Nick Holt, this is unbelievable to me. They are a complete mess.
Penalties, fumbles, botched snaps, no defense at all, couldn't score a TD from the OSU 7 yard line. Bonehead coaching like passing to DJ which got intercepted on the OSU 2 yard line, also would of been nice if they would of kicked a filed goal on 4th instead of going for it (and missing) on the Oregon 5. Players running the ball out from 5 yards in the end zone...the list goes on and on. It seems like Paul Hackett has returned. No excuse for what happened at all. I can see losing to Notre Dame or Cal or a Michigan in a bowl game...3-3 Oregon st.?
Right now PC is in a panic and he should be. He has a grocery list of things to fix. And I don't see them getting fixed anytime soon. These stumbling, bumbling, fumble prone, penalty taking Trojans aren't going to last long vs. Cal or Notre Dame, much less an Ohio st.
So we turn in a 8-4 year this year. Right now to me the smart money would be on another 8-4 or 7-5 year next year...And we know USC fans don't have much patience...
"It is heartbreaking to lose"...guys, guys...it's a GAME!...true, some of you are probably still paying your student loans so that you could go to a school with a football legacy...but that's your fault, isn't it?...quit acting like it's the end of the world!
