Linebacker Review
USC coach Pete Carroll said linebacker Keith Rivers is currently the best player on the defense. Rey Maualuga bounced back last week after a couple inconsistent games.
"He was overruning plays or trying to go through them," said one player.
A Pac-10 coach described Dallas Sartz's first six games as "quiet."

Pc should change his LB. He should move Rivers to the Elephant position, Cushing to Sartz’s (SLB) spot and have Rey run loose with the command of Lua at the MLB.

That sounds fair. Rivers is all over the field. Rey can be overly aggressive, and teams, particularly the Wash schools, used his aggressivenes against him. Dallas, unfortunately has not been a factor. Go with SE and LJ at the tackles, KM and AS or AM at the ends and Cush at the SAM?

Why was Staphon Johnson leaving the tunnel at th ASU game by himself?

He may have been overruning plays, but he was knocking out frat guys until the wee hours of the morning. Fight On!

John Wooden had a great expression. It was: "Quickness under control." You could be the world's quickest player and you would not play for Wooden until you played under control.

Sartz should not be starting. Either Maeva should start or Cushing should move to Sartz's spot and another DE should be on the field.
Sartz must be starting out of loyalty...

A quiet six games. How about a quiet career?!

As I posted twice in the last month, Sartz doesn't deserve to be on the field... just doesn't make plays. Also good to see that Pete see's Maualuga has a long way to go and misses an awful lot of plays. Not having Lua hurts. Rey is way more athletic, but Lua is still a better/more solid player right now.
Soulution: 4-3 D w/ Barret & Jackson on the ends, Ellis & Moala inside, Rivers & Cushing at OLB, Maualuga ILB (free'd up to make more plays). Rotate Lua in when he's healthy... backups w/ Maiava & Williams, then Sartz. As it is, Cushing is turning into a nobody at this DE position...that shouldn't happen with how athletic and fast he is.

Sartz is part of USC history. Starter on great defenses on 2 NC teams. But those team had outstanding defenders that allowed Sartz not to be a target. He seems lost on this team. No more blitzes with corner. Probably should be replaced by Williams or at least alternate.
Might help if PC was DC.

"quiet."
That's very generous. I prefer horrible. He hasn't done jack.

We suck according to WAZZU AND ASU PLAYERS:
USA Today notes that Arizona State quarterback Rudy Carpenter said that both California and Oregon are better than USC. This statement was also pointed out today by the Arizona Republic, which goes on to note that Washington State defensive end Mkristo Bruce, the nation's leader in sacks, also says the Trojans aren't the Pac-10's best. When asked to pick between Cal and USC, Mkristo said "Cal wins. USC is a great football team. They've got a high-powered offense and a high-powered defense. But Cal is a more relentless football team."
While the pale, creepy, middle aged fat guys with pony tails (sports writers, not Oregon fans) may continue to believe that USC is still a legitimate BCS contender, we'll find out who the top team in the Pac-10 is next month.

Rey overran the play that play that ASU score their 2nd TD on. I saw that on the replay. He left a gaping hole in the middle for the ASU RB to cruise through.
Rey needs to learn to stay parallel to line of scrimmage and shuffle his feet to avoid blockers. He is easily being wedge out by charging to the side of an offensive lineman.
I have seen Dallas miss too many tackles so far this year. He is not squaring his feet and exploding at the runner and wrapping the runner up with both arms. He has to keep his feet under him and on his toes.

Yes, Keith is finally living up to #55. He has been solid and consistent. The kid from Lake Mary has finally arrived. Several "fans" gave Rivers a hard time after coming back from injury late last season and appearing to press a bit. He is now proving all of them wrong. Keith IS the next great SC LB.

Rivers should have been playing inside the whole time. He played outside last year and teams ran away from him.

It seems that the "trader" linebacker coach is not doing a very good job with so much talent. Just because you can play doesn't mean you can coach.

Yeah CV, those really talented outside linebackers are easily taken out of the game - ever heard of LT?
Sartz looks like has not lifted weights since he hurt his shoulder last year. He looks too skinny to play the run and appears to be a step slow in pass coverage.

I truly believe Ray Maualuga and other LBs are playing out of position. I can tell just by observing their style of play. Ray is not a true MLB. I believe Oscar Lua is our closest player to a true MLB and should start there. Ray's style of play is best fitted for the off-inside LB position able to roam freely. Keith Rivers is our best pass-rushing LB, so he should be playing the elephant LB/DE position. I believe Kaluka Maiava and Cushing should rotate at the SLB. Dallas Sartz? Built like a monster, but harmless as a dove - Iv'e seen CBs hit harder than him. He is better off on special teams rushing the punter and FG kicker with his height 6-6.
