Meanwhile, In Mississippi
Former USC assistant Ed Orgeron is 4-12 after his first 16 games at Mississippi and 1-9 in Southeastern Conference play but his job seems safe because athletic director Pete Boone blames the recruiting efforts of former coach David Cutcliffe, who was fired in December 2004.
``There's a reason you have a coaching change,'' Boone said. ``I think what we're seeing now is that the recruiting the past few years of the previous group was not very good. I knew that. It was not a surprise to me.''

Earth to Ole Miss -- you're Ole Miss. You haven't won an SEC Title since 1963, you went almost 25 years with just 5 bowl appearances, David Cutcliffe shows up (short on scholarships no less), all of a sudden, you win 7 games every year, Eli Manning shows up, all of a sudden, you go to the Cotton Bowl, Eli goes, you go 4-7, and all of a sudden, Cuctcliffe has to go?
I like Orgeron as much as the next USC guy, but the right guy for that job is calling plays in Knoxville.

That's kind of a sad shot at the current players on the team. Nice to know the AD supports them 100%.

What do you question about coach O?
Thnx

I have no idea why Orgeron left USC in the first place. He is a D-line coach. Plain and simple. Not a head coach. There is now way he can be a head coach he doesn't have the experience or knowledge. That's why he flopping. I watch every Mississippi game they are horrible. No Offense at all. They are trying to bring in some JUCO's and transfers this year but it isn't helping much.
He should of stayed put at USC and kept winning. I hate to be blunt but it's just a matter of time before he is gone. Maybe CC will bring him back.

Hard to argue with that. Orgeron is a great position coach, probably one of the best and a great recruiter but as far as head coach material. Eh.

I don't question Coach O as an assistant -- as Btown wrote, he recruited terrifically and groomed a number of great defensive linemen at USC (and Syracuse and Miami) -- and I don't mean to condemn him as a head coach.
I question Pete Boone as an Athletic Director. Successful schools don't have coaching changes where the guy (Cutcliffe) who is two seasons removed from the program's best record in 30 years goes in favor of a guy (Orgeron) who doesn't have any similar experience. And they hardly have them based on an AD's perception of a coach's recruiting.

He has zero offense. The Defense is good but not deep and wears down in the second half. Its sad. But the word is he will get players if given the time. It won't be long before his DL players start showing up in the NFL from Ole Miss.

Great post MD...
Seriously firing Cutcliffe was a hige mistake. It's a product of warped perspectives again. It seems to be a disease in CFB today. Probably because almost every team is on TV all the time now so the AD's all start thinking that they all belong in BCS games. The same phenomenon is currently happening over at NC State with C. Amato being on the hot seat for not winning enough. It's NC State for crying out loud. You're not supposed to win 10-11 games per season. Chuck Amato was the best thing to happen to NC State in years and now they are gearing up to fire him after a down year. It's what happens when the Ole Miss's and NC State's start believing that they are Michigan/USC.
