Rotation Or Not?

USC offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin said it was decided before the Oregon State game to abandon the tailback rotation and go with junior Chauncey Washington.
``That was the thought. (Washington) had a great game against Arizona State and a great week of practice,'' Kiffin said. ``He ran really well, but the fumbles were a problem. If it continues to happen, he won't play.''

I'm kind of a jerk.

I thought Lane wasn't allowed to talk to the media anymore.

So, is this a threat that if CW fumbles a couple of more times he is basically off the team? Why make such a threat...through the media no less. Lane should just go back during practice, give CW a ball to carry around campus and have everyone on the team try to strip it from him while he is walking around. Isn't that what they do to freshman players when they first arrive at SC. Maybe CW should be treated like one since he didn't really play his frosh year with Bush and White.

Lane, coaching is not just calling plays during games, it's teaching his young players to grow as a person and as a player. Maybe Lane should go to a high school football program to learn how to "coach".

Did Lame Siffin give any thought to having Chauncey Washington run the ball for the two-point conversion? Or was he too worried about his buttery fingers?

And here's a couple other things to consider:

-- Switching Lawrence Jackson's nickname from "LoJack" to "NoSack."

-- Replacing the defensive coordinator for the second year in a row. Last year, Pete Carroll got the boot from himself after allowing Texas to do whatever it wanted in Pasadena. This year, Nick Holt might need to be shown the door.

Mr. Kiffin:
Last year, you named the "tandem" Thunder and Lighting,...and it worked...
What have you nicknamed this group,..tweedle dee and tweedledum?..and look ma,..their all thumbs!
You show no confidence in the run,..and little confidence in the pass,...but,..until game #7 we were balanced!,.. WHO CARES if we are balanced,..if a team is giving you the run take it! and...that also goes with IF an opponent is giving you the pass,.. TAKE IT!...geez,......sooo either MAKE them play the run,..or MAKE them play the pass!... although looks like each team believes we will not go long, and play us for the dinks and donks!,.. come on Lane,...Don't be balanced for balanced sake!...Let the kids have fun!.....and oh, by the way,...just like in basketball,..if a player is HOT,..you give them the ball!
Also, Mr Kiffin, it used to be that in the 3rd quarter, the weakness of our opponents defense was exploited, and especially on the first series of downs,..uh,,,what happened?...maybe you don't know what the weaknesses are?...maybe?...IF IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN,..MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO PLAY!

Fight On!

Yah I gotta agree with that. Lane 'ol buddy needs to worry about why he is throwing the football at the opposing teams 2 yard line which results in an INT instead of threatening Chauncey Washington.

Patrick said:

I gotta admit Kiffin/Sarkisian have really lost me this year. From starting off the season playing like a 9th grade team with runs up the middle and short dump offs, to ridiculous things like throwing that pass to DJ on the 2 yard line that was picked by OSU. Remember the pass play they called on the Nebraska 2 that was batted and almost returned 98 yards for a pick-six? Why do they keep trotting Mike Brittingham out there? And put him in the slot sometimes even?? Is he trying to make the other team laugh? What is the point of sending Travon Patterson out there? Everyone and their mom knows they won't throw it to him. How about tipping their hand? Everytime D. Reed goes into the game he touches the ball on the first play. Then comes out. Why don't we just give them our playbook?

Patrick said:

I gotta agree that's a dumb decision. Washington does not have that much experience. And what are Gable, Moody, Johnson, Reed and Havili going to do? Carry a clipboard?

I miss Norm.

PH55 said:

FDOG,

The first 2 pt conversion run was an audible by Booty based on the defense. On the second 2 pt attempt, the front was stacked to take away the run.

Pana said:

I can see that Lane Kiffen is liked as much as Scott Wolf.

PH55 said:

Patrick,

It has been a common aspect of the USC defense to throw near the goalline (going back to Norm too.) If Jarrett shows some toughness its a TD and we aren't arguing the point.

TrojanHorse said:

Although I didn't always like the play calling I was ready to give Kiffin benefit of the doubt, but I must say that after 7 games, I really am thinking maybe it is him.

As for CDub, I think its a good comment, you can't drop the rock twice and not have consequences. If he can't hang on, maybe someone else can. I just wish the same thing would apply to JDB

I'm still baffled on the final two pointer why we didn't do some kind of roll out where the option to run was there if the pass wasn't open.

Btown said:

Well, it's a good comment from anyone but Kiffin. That guy should be seen (on gameday) but not heard until he gets his part of the equation squared away, namely play calling.

But the comment is valid. Last week, Chauncey was talking about going pro next year. Uh, I love ya, CW, but maybe you should do more than just lead one drive down the field against a tired and pathetic ASU team before virtually declaring for the draft. You have a ways to go before you are a pro prospect. Could you imagine a running back on another team with 500 some odd yards on the year and splitting time with a freshman, spouting off about going pro? Some of these guys. I swear.

Trojan said:

Kiffin REALLY Sucks but the sad reality is that he will be there for the long haul (think of Coach Bowden and his horrible OC errr son), Holt Sucks (Bad Hire), 3-4 defense is horrible and not working. Cush may be the best pass coverage linebacker in the country, yet he mostly lines up for pass rush and gets manhandled by an OT. I am sad to say this is the first year that the team looks rudderless. No adjustments at halftime, no swagger, toughness or aggression. Their performance has dwindled each week. I swear I am having flashbacks to the Paul Hackett years. This team will lose 3 more games if something doesn't drastically change.

Trojan4life said:

Waiting for a player to fumble again and potentially cost us a game is not coaching. It's like being a parent, if your kid does something wrong you do something that's going to change the behavior, because if you don't they will continue to perform the same poor behavior. If all of SC's opponents watched the ESPN low-lights of the Oregon State game, you know they will be keying on CW when he's carrying the ball (and I use that term loosely). Let's see more Moody and Gable. At least Moody has some speed and can break a big one!

GeorgiaBoyLovesUSC said:

I love Moody, but he tends to juke himself back into tackles sometimes. To it looks like Gable hits the holes wide open and intent on getting somewhere he just looks fast. As for Bradford and Stafon, don't know haven't really seen them at all, but sure would like to at least once.

Tyler said:

Anyone who compares this seasons team to the Paul Hackett years needs to be banned from posting on any USC related board (or actualyl from any CFB board anywhere). Plain and simple.

A young team that has scored 20+ points in something like 1000 straight games gives you flashbacks to USC teams that finished last in the PAC-10. Are you delusional or just trying to be funny?

Greg said:

Patrick: When Brittingham is lined up wide, it means that the play that will be called is a bubble screen. DJ or Smith go in motion from the opposite side of the field or from the slot and Booty dumps it off to them with Brittingham as the lead blocker. This probably happens 90% of the time Brittingham is lined up at WR. Not trying to put you down, just saying they're probably not fooling anyone on the opposing defense when they trot #30 out on the field.
