So Where Are We Here?

Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin said he's no longer restricted in playcalling because John David Booty can handle everything Matt Leinart did.
``I feel the freedom to do everything, you just don’t have the Reggie (Bush) factor,'' Kiffin said. ``You’re only missing a guy that can go 80 yards. There’s nothing new we feel we can’t put on John David.''

Mr. Kiffin "Booty can make all the throws that ML couldn't" should just STFU and do his job. Plenty of work to do.

Kiffin is passing the buck. The offense is "too cute" in my opinion. strap it up and control the game. SC was outplayed last night.

I did like the play calling last night; I think the only thing that caught me by surprise was the Wazzou Defense was better than I thought

1. When is the last time anyone heard of an OC being quoted in the press as much as Mr. Limelight is quoted?

2. Why does Kiffin and PC seek to downgrade Leinart's accomplishments?

3. If Limelight's statement is true, then why was Reggie sitting on the bench in the critical plays at the Rosebowl?

4. Kiffin makes me long for Norm Chow...

STFU is exactly right. Kiffin should get his mind off of last year and focus solely on the present. He should concentrate on actually winning a ring -- remember we didn't get it done last year with "the most talented offense in the history of college football" -- then he can talk.

A comment for all of these SC fan being so brutal on this message board. Yes, the games has been ugly in styles and even close one last night but to slam Lane Kiffin or Scott Wolf is rediculous!! I think we should just shut-up and be glad we're still undefeated and hopefully get to the title. Be it we didn't have any internet board back in the 90s to have an avenue to dislya these gripes but I didn't see any of you filling the stands at the coliseum in supporting the Trojan through thick and thin! Therefore, don't be or represent the stereotype of us being labled "Spoil Children" and have the expectations of the Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and Lendale White type of team. Give this young team some time and they will make their own headlines!

Fight On!

Restricted or not, Lane is Lame. Again I ask, when will Pete Carroll's debt to Monte finally be paid?

ONLY???

Kiffen is such an idiot.

Then when teams play the run and dare us to throw, start airing it out. No more pansy "by the book football" trying to run the clock out.

PA Trojan said:

Kiffin needs to get his head out of 2005!!! Reggie's not here - deal with it! Start calling plays for the players we have THIS YEAR you freaking moron!!

Calling run plays on 3rd and 12 when all we need is a first down to end the game is NOT a good idea. Running up the middle worked at NO point in that game. What portion of the game made him think this was a good call?

Use the weapons Pete and the recruiting staff have worked their tails off to get at SC!

I am really relishing the aftermath of the ballgame last night, as many of you former Lame Kiffin supporters have now realized what others and myself have tried to express and allude to this season.

Unfortunately, the full ramifications of the decision to have Lame calling plays will result in a loss this year. It is very plain to see, IMO. Also, those who have stated that there grandmas could call better ball games than Lame are correct in their assertion!

Oaks Christian HS coach>Lame Kiffin

Hey SC Fan, no one was bashing Scott! We are expressing our anger with Kiffin's inability to just shut up, concentrate on our current players, call a decent game (when was the last one? last year sometime!), as well as wondering why he is a schmuck!

Hey eftzoons.....I feel the same way brotha!!!

STFU Lame Kiffin!

PH55 said:

Hey Redcorn,

I'm not happy with Kiffin right now either but to insinuate the Oaks Christian coach would do better is ridiculous. He doesn't even call his plays at Oaks. And, Oaks has it easy because they are far superior to anything else on the field.

Hey SC Fan,
I sat in the coliseum stands through thick and thin and I didn't see you there.
I'll give you an example of why everyone is so upset with Lame Kiffin.
The third quarter 99 yard touchdown drive was huge, but there was a 3rd and 11 just inside the 50 in WSU territory with 6:30 on the clock. What does Kiffin call, a friggin running play that goes for about two yards. 11 yards was needed for a 1st down. Disregard that we went for it on 4th and got the 1st down, THE POINT IS it shouldn't come to a 4th down situation if a play designed to get 11 yards on 3rd down was entrusted to Booty. Keep in mind we were in WSU territory not on our own ten yard line so there was no need to play conservatively!
Now conversely, the play that started that 99 yard drive was a fortunate pass interference call on WSU and the line of scrimmage was within our ten yard line. How come Kiffin was taking chances deep in our own territory and playing conservative at midfield?
Fight on people!

SC Fan - I was a student from 91-95 and was at every home game, beginning to end. I went to every Weekender, but that was all I could afford at the time. I'm critical of Kiffin exactly because I know how terrible those days were! I don't expect an easy season, but I do expect more from coaches on a top-tier team.

I'm thrilled that SC is still undefeated, but with play calling the way it's been going, it's only a matter of time before we are no longer that way.

Tyler said:

The run on 3rd and 11 was a good call. Everyone knows 3rd and 11 is an obvious passing down. Wazzu came out in a passing defense. USC in the PC era occasionally runs in those situations(especially in opponent territory) because they regard them as 4 down situations. i.e. A run has the possibilty of breaking big against a pass defense and in the case it doesn't they were planning to go for it on 4th down regardless. Which they did and picked it up.

The problems on Saturday were not on offense. They were on defense specifically the defensive line - which got 0 pressure.

Steve said:

Lane Kiffin should stop running the Paul Hackett Offense. 3rd and long and he is running it up the gut. Dumb.

fanman said:

In regards to all the ridicule Lane Kiffin has been taking, why hasn't anyone ridiculed Teflon Pete or Nick Holt for that matter. The defense was anything but dominant. It was DORMANT!

Also, it seems like a lot of you are pushing the "bring back Norm chow, who can do no wrong" panic button. But, if I remember correctly PC and NC had the same exact kind of game against UCLA in the Rose Bowl two years ago. UCLA almost pulled an upset if wasn't for a few lucky breaks for USC. It was no wonder every oddsmaker was laying heavy odds on Oklahoma in the NC, but look what happened? So, relax, the offense will find its identity over the next few weeks, and the defense will pull itself together. If it doesn't, then let's hear some ridicule of PC and NH. Defense, that's where championships are won and lost.

Running on third and long has been successful more than once already this year. At this point though, that is the tendency and teams know it. One thing I have been disappointed in is the o-line play. With inexperience everywhere else (WR excluded) they just aren't doing the job to open things up in the run game. Also, this is a young team, they need to get a little slack as they learn. WSU is one of those teams that every couple of years will jump up and play you tough. Remember, these teams play each other every year. Even with new players opposing teams know your tendencies from year to year. Bottom line, O and D, playcalling is always suspect if execution is poor. These guys are young, give them a break.

Hey Fanman, UCLA is the crosstown rival. THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO PLAY REAL HARD TO TRY AND UPSET THEIR HATED RIVAL. In the 2004 season I knew UCLA was going to be our ambush game. In these other years though there has not been much fight in them. Before last season I knew ND and Fresno St were our ambush games.

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan.
