Tight End Talk

It's ironic that starting tight end Fred Davis caught five passes in the season-opener against Arkansas but against Arizona State, with all the talk about injured receivers, did not catch a single pass. Maybe that is one reason the offense's production is suffering. The tight end position was basically MIA last season too.
By the way, feshman tight end Anthony McCoy always played wide receiver in high school but that is because he never weighed more than 230 pounds until his senior year. He now weighs 250 pounds.
"I always only wanted to be a wide receiver but now I like tight end better,'' McCoy said.

Well he doesn't have alot of experience...it's not totally his fault. He is also playing with Mr. JD "If Jarrett isn't open I am going to have a panic attack and not know what to do" Booty...

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like Fred Davis either drops a pass at the wrong time or gets called for a penalty.

Ever think that the coaching staff stopped going to him because they're trying to discipline him for his mental mistakes?

Scott, I'd be interested to know if you can look up how many penalties Fred's committed so far this season.

That being said, I think Fred's a huge piece of the puzzle and hopefully all this gets worked out.

Fight On!

THANK YOU SCOTT!!! My thoughts exactly. Without Leinart, Bush and LenDale running up and down the field, this is the first year that we actually get to see Lane Kiffin put to the test. I understand that with our depleted fullback position, they are forced to use tight ends to help with blocking, but they should use Fred Davis and Anthony McCoy because of their ability to make catches in zone coverage. They also should use more screen plays to Moody in order to give him more opportunities in space, similar to how they used Bush the last couple of years.

If Fred Davis had reacted better to the ball, he would have had a long TD catch against Washington. So there!

Seriously, you make a good point. What I have missed the last few weeks is the bootlegs with the TE crossing short and one of the WR deep. Those easy dumps to the TE on the move in space have been very productive plays in this offense in recent years - they are nice safe gains, move the chains and keep up the tempo of the offense. Where the heck has that been?

This year the reason TEs catches are down could be the mssing FBs, due to injury. They're needed to block more now. Did that possibility slip your mind Scott?

I have no idea why they don't use their TE's. They had Dom Byrd last year and Fred this year. No attention paid to them at all...maybe once a game. Waste of more talent...

The tight end position is MIA because Sarkiffin perfers to run on 3rd and 12.

Towards the end of last season, Fred Davis appeared to be coming into his own. Everyone was excited this year because he added another threat to the mix. But since we don't have a mix, thanks to Sarkiffin, his talents are not being utilized.

Open up the frickin' play book.

I honestly think he doesn't like tight end and it's affecting his play. "Now I like TE better" who is he trying to convince? Us or himself? Like A. Bradford who all of a sudden likes playing FB when he flat out refused to play that position last month...I say let's start the M. Sanchez countdown now. 7 months until spring ball 2007. As long as JDB keeps throwing INT's, fumbling, telegraphing his passes and generally looking lost he will be riding pine next year.

I miss Norm Chow, Wolfie!!! Alex Holmes and Dominique Byrd were used well by Coach Chow, but why doesn't Sark(Chow's disciple) use the Tight Ends to their abilities??? Coach Carroll needs to think about bypassing kiffin regarding the offense and hopefully, start to use what is there and not what kiffin wants to be there...Hey, kiffin, #'s 5, 11, and LenDale White are not at USC anymore...Bruce in Anaheim Hills

I miss Norm Chow!!!!!!!! Kiffin never used Dominique Byrd to his potential and it showed in the Rose Bowl...don't believe me?...just look at the Orange Bowl in '03, the Rose Bowl in '04, and the beatdown of OK in '05 at the Orange Bowl, again. Norm Chow used Alex Holmes and D.B. better than he used the wide outs...Norm fooled their defenses. Kiffin must think that the T.E. is for blocking only and must check in w/the referee to make himself eligible to handle the football...fire the fresno state alumnus who only has that job because of his daddy...no disrespect to Coach Carroll, but i can spell nepotism...Bruce in Anaheim Hills...Come back, Petros!!!!

I believe the 2 most underestimated positions on the USC offense are the tight end and fullback. During the first game shellacking of Arkansas, USC received big time production from these two positions. Since then, zilch. Unfortunately, we lost 3 very good fullbacks. I say we use the young Anthony McCoy more. According to reports earlier this year, this kid has the makings of a future All-Pro. Many compare his play-making ability to that of Kellen Winslow Jr. Fred Davis is too slow, committs too many penalites, and never breaks tackles despite his large frame. I think a mosquito bite recorded a tackle on him in the Washington State game. Please put in Anthony McCoy!!!!
