Turning Point?
USC's rash of close victories might be viewed as the mark of a struggling team but Trojans coach Pete Carroll thinks the halfway point is merely where this year's team will start playing much better, like his then-youthful team three years ago.
``It is like the 2003 team because we didn't know what we were doing and we were young,'' Carroll said. ``That year, this is just where we got going.''

What a shock. Pete trying to put a positive spin on the current situation.
This act is getting old Pete. You are like the anti-Holtz. Give it a rest and just start telling the truth.

I think Cal has peaked already while USC still has plenty of upside in the next 6 games.
With maturation and physical healing, this could still be a very special team.

Scott,
Get a life man!! It complete bull**it that ND, Texas and Cal (and Oregon) get a 'pass' for inferior teams when USC is not that good for close wins. Did Oregon beat WSU? NO! Did Cal stop UW on the last play? NO! Did Texas beat NU by 3 scores? NO! They had to win by a gimmee miss!!! Even the Volunteers needed a last quarter drive against Alabama to win. All of the concern to win by margin is CRAP!!!! Remember when USC beat Arkansas by 36? Auburn smashed WSU but USC "barely" beat the Cougs... Hate to say it but ND keeps winning even though it was smashed by Michigan. I guess that makes the close game by Michigan against Vanderbilt questionable???
You and your fellow journalists in line and report objectively (isn't that the point of the free press?). Stop fabricating stories and tell the truth. I'll pay you $250 bucks if West Virginia wins the BCS.

$250??? Don't hold back, Mike!

Yeah, old Petey is sure blowing a lot of sunshine around these days. USC pretty much sucks. They have been so lucky this year.
Reading about all USC problems and how lucky they have been, it makes you think they have been behind in games plenty this year.
Segway to trivia time - when was the last time USC trailed in a game?
Hint - it was after a field goal in the Palouse. Since that huge 3-0 hole at Wazzu, the Trojans haven't trailed.
What's the largest deficit they have faced this year?
A. 3 pts. (and have only trailed in two games)
Bonus question - largest deficit last year? 18 pts. at ASU of course.
How many times have they trailed after the 1st quarter this year?
A. ZERO
Sure, the ASU game was in jeopardy being tied in the 4th. But the point is, this team is a lot more solid than almost anyone is giving them credit for. The objective is to win 12 games and get to the big bowl, not earn a bunch of style points.

Nice post Davey. USC has trailed for less than five minutes TOTAL in the entire season...and they were ahead in each game from the second quarter onward.
Why is that devalued against teams that need to come from behind to win games like ND, Texas, etc.?

I guess that SC was about to crash and burn after they almost got beat by a mediocre UCLA team two years ago. Oh wait, they crushed Oki in one of the biggest blowouts in #1 vs. #2 history. Winning close games does build character. And Pete is spinning positive webs.
For the guy who wrote about Pete telling the truth... I just overheard Pete talking to the cashier at 7-11. "I am so worried about this season. We are awful. I wish I could have a new QB. Booty is so overrated and I don't like the way he squats when he throws. The defense is not as good as other years. We will be lucky to win any more games. Maybe we can get to the Holiday Bowl." Since when were coaches not supposed to be positive?

RE: Winning points, margin or style?
The east coast biased media can NOT see further west than WV or Indiana(ND)...

Dear eftzoons:
You are either a Bruin or you were born yesterday. Maybe we will win out, maybe not. But which other Pac-10, or national teams are undefeated at this point? How bad can it be?
Show some faith in our coaches and players - I'm sure they want to win too, and will work hard to get to the end undefeated. Taking it week by week and not looking ahead - the same mistake many teams made when they lost what were supposed to be easy wins - is the winner's way to approach the season. Every opponent is given their due.
Show a little faith and some guts please.
