Two-Way Player

Once he gets comfortable playing safety, which probably means next year, freshman Taylor Mays would like to consider playing a little offense too. Mays was a two-way star in high school and entertains thoughts of playing offense and defense.
''We talked about it during the recruiting process and it's something I'd like to do one day,'' Mays said.

That's great. But how about this. How about worry about learning how to play free safety first. Because as of right now he's totally lost out there. It kind of makes the game interesting to watch him run around pre-snap asking Ellison or the linebackers where he's supposed to be lined up and then when the play starts either blitzing the wrong gap (allowing Rudy freaking Carpenter to run for 38 yards) or backpedaling so deep into his centerfield coverage that it's like we're playing 10 on 11. Don't even get me started on his pursuit angles.

But again, he's just a true freshman so this is all part of the territory. However, I'd really think he'd want to not talk about playing offense at this point since he's just barely playing defense.

This has to be a joke. This kid can't even play saefty right and he wants to play offense? No way no how would I ever allow him to do that if I was the coach.

I gotta agree with the above posts...he has ALOT to learn about safety let's concentrate on that. He is invisibile out there.

Why are we not playing Sartz at safety? Little help? anyone?

Taylor is going to be a great one but he might see more time on offense next year with a healthy pinkard.

Great now everyone on the team is going to want to be "slash" and we will have guys running out on offense and defense. They are confused already and take too many men on the field penalties.

Way too early Taylor. You need to be a student of the game first. It's not all about athletic ability only, as you are finding out. Master the safety position first, so we can see your potential fulfilled and then entertain the idea of offense. Learn from Darnell Bing the past 3 years. He had the same potential as you when he arrived at USC - 3 year starter and All-American last year. There was finally talk about using him at TB this year, if he returned for his senior year. You must learn how to walk on rice paper first, grasshopper!
