Washington Report Card

| | Comments (15) |

Here's the report card for the Washington game.

RESULT: NO. 3 USC 26, WASHINGTON 20.
RECORD: 5-0, 3-0.
WEEK 5 GPA: 2.6.

QUARTERBACK

We stopped keeping track of the near-interceptions that Washington dropped but then again, John David Booty was probably due for a poor outing after such a bright start.

C-

RUNNING BACKS

Chauncey Washington ran better than ever, although his longest run was called back by a penalty. Emmanuel Moody finally looked average. Now about those fumbles . . .

B-

WIDE RECEIVERS

No matter who gets injured, someone steps up. Patrick Turner’s 12 catches meant for the first time ever, USC has three receivers with at least 11 catches in a game in the same season.

A-

OFFENSIVE LINE

Take away those two penalties that erased big plays and the line actually enjoyed a good performance. Center Ryan Kalil played his best game of the season.

B+

DEFENSIVE LINE

There were no sacks again, but they didn’t let quarterback Isaiah Stanback go crazy and the secondary bears some responsibility for how much time a quarterback has to throw the ball.

B-

LINEBACKERS

A big day for Keith Rivers, who made 12 tackles and deflected two passes but let’s not forget the Huskies nearly amassed 400 yards offense, which Washington State did the week before. And where was everyone on that 46-yard reverse?

B-

DEFENSIVE BACKS

There’s a lot of room for receivers to find open spots in a zone defense, and it would have been a lot worse if Stanback were more accurate.

C

SPECIAL TEAMS

The good: A blocked punt by Brian Cushing and Steve Smith’s touchdown on a fake field goal. The bad: Letting Washington recover an onsides-kick and having 10 men on the field for a punt.

B-

COACHING

USC’s season nearly came down to a single play before Washington blew it and let the clock expire. Before that, the decision to pass on third-and-goal at the 4-yard line stopped the clock and gave the Huskies a chance to win the game.

Agree wholly with your assessment, Scott!

Keep up the great work!

The last part is the most telling! It seems as though PC is taking a page out of the "Karl Dorrell Manual" in how to coach...which means being a crappy coach!

Lest we forget Lame Kiffin, ugh, I am just sick of this spoiled punk! I really wish that Monte would tell Pete, "We're even Petey!" PC would then fire Lame Kiffin and replace him with Calvin Magee, WVU's OC. Then Lame Kiffin can get to work as a head coach for some high school team....right where he belongs!

This year more than any, it seems PC is really in over his head! Two bad decisions in a row in consecutive weeks: WSU and not going for two, it was his fault (thanks for the info. Scott!), and passing on 3rd down near the goaline Saturday, WTF?

All our coaches are mediocore this year!

Hey Scott, check out what these homers think of you! They are full of it. They are UM homers. They run MZone, located here:

Open Letter to Kevin Pearson and Scott Wolf

If you follow the polls like I do, you might have noticed that just two voters out of the three major college football polls - AP, Harris and Coaches - have West Virginia ranked as the top team in all the land. The two voters putting the Mountaineers atop their ballot are Los Angeles Daily News sports writer Scott Wolf and Riverside Press-Enterprise writer Kevin Pearson. Yesterday, I wrote the email below asking them to shed some light on their selection of WVU as #1.

Mr. Pearson and Mr. Wolf,

I run a college football blog and had a question for you.

I noticed that you are one of the two AP voters who have voted West Virginia the top team in the land this entire season. As a mere college football fan and not a professional such as yourself, I was wondering if you could enlighten me and our readers as to why you continue to make such a pick because I'm thoroughly confused.

I was under the (hopeful) impression that one's ballot had something to do with what happens on the field. Yes, West Virginia's victory over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl was quite impressive, but it was also last season. So please help me understand your vote as it pertains to the 2006 season.

Does it have something to do with WVU's blowout win against 1-4 Marshall? Their 52-3 thumping of 1-5, 1-AA Eastern Washington? Were you moved by their 21 point victory over Maryland since a) they have a winning record at 3-2 and b) they're 1-A? Or did I miss something you didn't in their stirring victories over 2-3 ECU and 1-5 Mississippi State?

Any explanation you could give would be most helpful. I myself vote in an online blog poll but am obviously doing something wrong as I don't even have West Virginia in my top five. For some reason, I was much more impressed with Ohio State going on the road to defeat both Texas and Iowa in September. I gave more weight to Florida beating Tennessee, Alabama and LSU over the last 4 weekends. And 4 out of USC's 5 wins have come against teams with winning records, including ranked Nebraska and now-ranked Arkansas.

Hell, I even have the Vols ahead of the Mountaineers, being more impressed with their victories over undefeated Georgia and Cal, their lone loss being a one point set-back to Florida.

Anyway, since you are only one of two writers in the country in the three major polls (AP, Coaches' and Harris Interactive) to vote West Virginia #1, I was just looking for some insight as to what you see that the rest of the college football seems to be missing.

Sincerely,

Yost

John Redcorn = Scott Wolf? ;)

Totally agree with your analysis. As for the narrowing depth at reciever, perhaps it's time to take the red shirt off David Ausberry.

interesting post J.R., I would have to concur... these two guys must be giggling while sharing tea and polls.

Thanks to John Redcom for posting the M Zone letter. I was in the process of drafting a similar letter and now I don't have to. I can't wait to hear the response. Scott?

P. Carroll made the logical choice just as he did against Texas. Go for the win. I believe USC had to go with their best attempt at winning the game on third down with a TD. Their belief was the pass play was their best chance to deliver the knock out punch and end the game. OK, it didn't work. You don't let "making Wash use their last time" out dictate what you do in this situation. Give me a break....talk about hindsight being 20/20

Scott, you may be a great writer but I'm guessing you were never too hot in basic math/probability/logic. P. Carroll may not be perfect but his decisions almost always make perfect sense to me. You second guessers have the benefit of hindsight.

I think not being able to interview PC for, how long has it been, Scott???? Years? Do they still allow you in the press room following the games or do you get all your tidbits from the players in secret?

I think the head coaching assessment is bogus. Give UW some credit - they've caught up. It's obvious, for what ever reason, this coaching staff has little faith in it's running game or its offensive line - even thought they are putting up respectable numbers but not Bush/White blow outs.

As such, I do agree that the offensive play calling is unimaginative and suspect. Kiffin is still learning the game. He is not a Jedi yet...

I agree that the call by USC's coaching staff to pass rather than to rush is one that I would not have made. But I am really surprised that we are so quick to criticize. A D+ for coaching? This is a coaching staff that has patched together a completely new backfield, a new starting quarterback and three new starting offensive linemen and is coping with the loss of two (and for times all three) of the top players at the wide receiver position. On the other side of the ball, the secondary is very young and USC has been having to do without Ellis for some time. It is an incredible thing to criticize USC coaching. They are 5-0. They are doing a great job in what is a rebuilding year. Show me another team out there with such inexperience that is doing better.

I'm sorry... I thought I read, "Washington blew it and LET the clock run out." I THINK you're a journalist and although this is a homer blog, you can't be serious, can you? The refs blew the clock call, everyone watching the game knows that - and don't tell me about wasting time outs! Try and be a little objective. Suc got another "gift" from the refs (some things never change). Not sure how you do it each and every game, well almost every game, but this one for sure! Washington "blew it" - ahhh lol... you guys are funny.

Scott, by the quality of your writing, I can tell you’re as intelligent as you are prolific unlike Mr. Redcorn. So, your coacking grade leave me to believe that you’re not seeing the Big Picture. First of all, one play – right or wrong – does not an entire game make. What about TW? Does he get a D also for not having Stanback get set under center and take the snap as soon as the ref blew the whistle? Especially after he was allowed to wander all over the field like a barnyard hen. Maybe we should give TW an F.

No, PC and staff were right to call a pass on that critical third down and put the game on JDB’s shoulders just as they had at WSU – 4 red zone trips and 4 TDs. Although I would have called a play action rollout with an option for JDB to run if no one was open, a pass was definitely the way to go there. The problem was JDB’s read. He was forced to thread the needle all day with PT who’s had a difficult time so far creating separation. So, JDB went to the well once too often and was lucky he wasn’t picked off. But his second receiver, Davis the TE, had some separation on his man. That was the play – TD! Look at the tape.

So much for one play. What you’re not seeing here is that PC and his staff have had to use no less than 15 true freshmen in critical roles against very credible Division 1A opponent. If you think WSU and Udub aren’t credible, think again. If you think you can just suit up 5-star recruits, pat them on the butt and send them into a game with nothing but raw talent, think again and again. That’s real coaching. I suppose Redcorn thinks Chow could do a better job like he’s doing with the VY and the Titans or like he did in 2004 against Cal and UCLA, two teams that we should have stomped, but like WSU and Udub, we only escaped with the narrowest of wins.

Let me use an analogy here. Scott, what if your editor asked you to train 15 Redcorns and have them write a sports column that would be anything that the Times put out by this Sunday? What grade do you think he would give you? Would he give you a D because one of the Redcorns had left a dangling participle or a had a run-on sentence. Get my drift?

I know it’s your role to create controversy and enflame the Redcorns, but let’s give some credit where credit is due. How does PC and his staff know what to expect from 15 raw recruits and a handful of sophs? What do you expect? Good luck with that column.

Two things need to be said:

1. HEY BRUINS FANS GET OFF THIS SITE! THIS IS A USC SITE! GO TO YOUR BRUIN SITE AND POST WHATEVER YOU WANT THERE! I DON'T WANT TO HEAR COMMENTS AND OPINIONS FROM A PACK OF LOSERS! HERE'S A REFRESHER--WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME THE UNIVERSITY OF CRAPPY LITTLE ADULTS BEAT USC? 1997 OR SOMETHING? GET LOST!

2. I agree passing it was wrong. No play is 100% guranteed even though they thought they had the right call for a TD. Make Washington burn the time out. Another blown call, like last week, by the coaching staff who "forgot" to go for the 2 point conversion vs WSU. This is a team effort, coaching is bad, injuries hurt us, the running game is still very hit or miss. Now we seem to be fumbling it 3-4 times a game to top everything off. Very conservative defense that gives up yards. Dink and dunk passing game.

Now, I agree the first few games we had to play it real vanilla to break the new guys in. IT'S NOT THE FIRST GAME ANYMORE. Open up the offense, open up the defense. Blitz, take more chances. They are playing not to lose instead of to win. And that will guarantee a loss somewhere along the line.

I don't want to comment on the refs/game clock. Refs suck everywhere for everyone. You just have to deal with it. If we were further ahead it wouldn't of mattered. I have seen posts about how PC is doing such a great job with so many young kids and blah blah...I just don't buy that. There's a ton of talent out there. And all we have done is beat an Arkansas team that has some SERIOUS problems, a Nebraska team that tried to run off tackle 50 times in the game, a very bad Arizona team, and almost lost to a poor WSU and Washington team. And lost a spot in the polls to Florida in the process.
