About Tyler
Our Oaks Christian High School sources tell us USC contacted tailback Marc Tyler after he broke his left fibula and had a pin placed in his lower leg and informed him that a scholarship awaited him no matter how complicated the recovery.
Although some players lose their ability to cut with these type of injuries, NFL players suffered similar injuries with no lasting damage. A closer-to-home example is former USC fullback David Kirtman, who suffered a similar injury in high school and completely recovered.

So if one is to have an injury to his leg, is a broken leg always better than an ACL?
An ACL usually means never being the same as before, such as Jerry Rice after Warren Sapp hurt him in Tampa Bay in 1997. Didn't Kellen Winslow also hurt his ACL and other things? I say this since Kellen Winslow said he will never be 100%, only 90%. But he states that his 90% is better than 100% of the TEs in the NFL!
Or more close to home, Desmond Reed and Josh Pinkard are examples of players who have never been the same after an ACL.
However, since Tyler broke his leg, usually one can recover fully and regain their old form.
Scott, didn't Cadillac Williams break his leg in 2003, but he came back really strong in 2004, as well as excelling in the NFL post-broken leg?
Also Scott, Michael Bush of Louisville is out for the season with a broken leg. He even stated himself that he was 'glad' it was a broken leg rather than an ACL.
Michael Bush said something like, "At least it was a broken leg, and not an ACL. People never are the same after an ACL. But people break their legs all the time. I'm not worried. I'll be back stronger than ever!"
Anyone heard of troiboi?
SC did the right thing. Fight on, Marc!
Pete's running a "Class Act"!...
need we say more,...
Oh Yeah,..,,Like a friend said,....
...."In PETE we TRUST!"
Fight On!
SC and Tyler are both class acts. He could be one of the most sought after RB recruits ever - that's saying a lot. He ranks right up there with Reggie and others in HS.
Marc will appreciate their gesture and fully recover to bring the iron to heritage hall. He is now in the family and nobody will take for granted his early commit when the whole world wanted him. He has time. And even if it takes a full year... he can redshirt, learn the book, and get strong and healthy for '08.
This is what SC is all about and why I am proud to call myself a Trojan.
Karl, I think that typically you are right - a torn ligament is usually more damaging to a player's career than a broken bone. However, a torn ACL is not always a death sentence. Willis McGahee demolished his ACL (and I believe his MCL and PCL as well) and seems to have returned to his old form in the NFL. And I wouldn't write Pinkard off just yet, he only hurt himself at the beginning of the season.
I had a tibia and fibula fracture in 2004. When they put the titanium rod down through your tibia it is good fix and you can be walking on it in a week. They put you in a boot after a couple weeks and you can remove it to sleep and shower.
Even at age 68 I was walking with a walker in a month and back on my Segway in two months.
They will leave the rod in about a year and take it out. He will probably redshirt next year and be good as ever to start 2008.
Nice gesture by SC. I have seen Tyler several times in person this year, and he is an unbelievable talent both on offense and defense. He is one of those special players and I can't wait to see him healthy sporting the Cardinal and Gold!
Wonder whether this will change Broderick Green's soft verbal into a real commit?
He'll be fine. My best friend is an Orthopedic surgeon (bone doc) and he was at the game watching his son play when the injury occured. He told me that Marc broke his fibula (smaller supporting side bone) and that he should have a full recovery in about 6 weeks. He said that it was a common football injury, and he also said that if properly healed it will be stronger than before.
