Defensive Shift

Oscar Lua, the player other defensive members say is the team leader, is getting more playing time because of frustration with starter Rey Maualuga.
``(Maualuga's) a young player and there's things he continues to have to work on,'' USC coach Pete Carroll said Sunday night. ``He missed on man coverages because he was overaggressive. Oscar Lua is playing more because (Maualuga's) made some mistakes.''

Every week you have these "Pete Carroll said Sunday night" items. Why is Pete so talkative on Sunday nights?

CaliFB said:

Did CP see Sunday Night Football and how Bellicick used Seau? That's how Pete should use Rey. He shouldn't have to cover much but he should rush the passer up the middle because no one can handle his power and speed.

IT'S ABOUT FRIGGIN' TIME AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED REY REY CAN SIT ON THE BENCH UNTIL NEXT YEAR

I think one of the few big blunders the coaching staff has committed this season was elevating Rey so quickly ahead of Oscar. The defense has little to no leadership... and that's an important area. Lua was going to be that but realistically, it's hard to be a leader when you're not even starting.

Yes, Rey has better athleticism, but there's much more to it than that. Oscar is much more solid out there, and combined with the leadership area, should be starting and playing much more (assuming he is healthy). Rey will be great some day if he's willing to be coached, but as said before, for every great play or hit he makes, he misses two as he gets over aggressive and out of position (and rarely takes blockers on square).

Umm, the day after a game, you usually have some time to sit back and analyze some video of the game. Is this so unusual?

Rey has been making his reads too fast all year; where is Coach Norton?

Rey has been making his reads too quickly; where has Coach Norton been all season. This problem need some attention.

Because he talks in his sleep.

making mistakes comes with the territory..that's why they practice and hopefully learn during the week...to suggest that being over aggressive as a usc linebacker is bad, boarders on the insane.. no such thing as an over aggressive football player....sorry !!

Again, Lua was hurt that's why Rey was elevated.

Davey said:

Funny how before the season every message board was filled with posts about how Oscar Lua sucked and was just listed with the first team due to seniority. The number of posts calling for Rey to start were at least 9-1 vs. those supporting Oscar.

Now Pete is an idiot for playing Rey in front of Oscar!!!

What does it all mean? In the words of Mike Garrett, Joe Blow doesn't know football.

It looks like all the "Start Rey Now!" crew has moved on to "Start Mark Sanchez!"

Well, I'm gonna stay ahead of the game.

Why isn't Pete starting Chris Galippo!
Let's get Aaron Corp some time already!

Who's with me?

Patrick said:

It was a nice idea. He does have alot of potential. But it's time to get Lua back in there.

That is a great post by Mitch. Ken Norton Jr is a great coach...what is happening?

oh well..time to start stocking up the beer for the Oregon game.....

A real linebacker, such as Tatupu or even Groots, does not exist at USC. He will come in 2007 though (Galippo).

Rey should take a cue from his fellow class of 2005 linebacker from THE Ohio State!

"Through nine games in 2006, Laurinaitis leads the team in tackles (75) and shares the lead in interceptions (4), and also has 8.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks."

Enjoy breathing and inhaling the scent of loserness that will permeate throughout the Coliseum...because we will lose! No, not just against the Ducks. The next 3 games at least!

CaliFB said:

I can't wait for Gallippo next year. He's a Lofa tatupo type player that will bring stability to the MLB that has been missing since the great Lofa tatupo went to the NFL.

Michael R. said:

Wow. I was only kidding about the call for Galippo.

I hear he's a stud on the field though. And I'm iffy on Rey, so I won't argue with anyone.

GeorgiaBoyLovesUSC said:

Why don't we start Lua and keep Rey out there as a floating wild man disrupter and sit somebody else. I mean even when Rey missed his assignment on the screen pass he ran the guy down like he was sitting still, and he knocked the crap out of a runner going by when he was guarding another player, so let Lua play the gaps, or whatever he is responsible for and let loose Rey to reek some havoc!

Michael R. said:

Does anyone have a theory as to why Rey is a Butkus finalist? We all see the mistakes he makes, is it just because he's flashy and his hair reminds people of Polamalu?

I don't know about the "distupter" idea, don't we already have an "elephant?"
