Floyd On Mayo
USC coach Tim Floyd on signing O.J. Mayo, the No. 1 recruit in the nation.
``He’ll be here a year and he’ll be gone and that’s OK. That’s who he is. I’m going to encourage it. He’s sold tickets wherever he’s been and I know he will here. It makes it easier for other great players to look at USC.
``I think I’ve had five conversations with him. I’ve never done less recruiting. He called us the first conversation and said he wanted to come and never wavered. He has a great amount of poise. He doesn’t carry himself as a prima donna. He can play point guard or off guard at the next level.''

Hey Wolfie, when are we going to get some news on women's volleyball, since your "inside" reporting of football has been anything but "Inside". BTW are you being treated like TJ Simers where no one at USC will talk to you, so you are making crap up.
New nickname for Wolfie = TJ Simers.
P.S. Me thinks you miss Petros' radio show. I know I do. FIght On USC this Saturday. Fight on Petros...please return to the airways, cuz 1540 sux now.
Mayo is not as good as Kevin Love.
UCLA>SUC
Not only football, but basketball as well.
FIGHT OFF!
LMAO @ homer fans such as those here and at that site wearesc
BTW, anyone see that awesome game by Riggins on Friday Night Lights?
He was not even supposed to play tailback, he ended up being the star of that homecoming game on Tuesday's show!
I get it now. Bundy is a parody. Right?
A fellow Trojan named Harold Miner brought excitement to SC-basketball that I can never recall happening before. There was the '71 team with Westphal that went 24-2 and did not go to the tournament, because only the conference champions were invited back then. Too bad-- that was a great guard-oriented team, but could not beat the forward-dominated UCLA team that year...And of course the early 2000s team that made it to the elite-8 was a favorite. I hope that Mayo can bring back that kind of excitement, even if for only one-year.
I don't think Tim Floyd intends on being at SC very long. In my opinion, this is about the same as running an NBA team by signing folks to one-year free agent contracts. There will be no way that you can BUILD a successful program by bringing in High School superstars who are merely marking time until they are eligible for the NBA draft. It will not build a program, but destroy it because each time you bring in the next wonder-boy who will do incredible things (like fill a new Galen Center...gee...I thought the objective was to win championships) you will have the resentment of those who stay longer who are constantly being overshadowed by the 1-year wonders who come to the program. Glad we're getting our name in the news regarding basketball, but strategically this is not a sound practice.
I don't think it can hurt the program with OJ staying a year. It will show other recruits that 'SC can get you great exposure and they'll be more likely to come. A very few will have what it takes to leave after one year so there will be chances to build up a solid team.
I was a student during the Harold Miner times. It was fun. I'd never heard anything but good stories about the man as a person as well.
It's a shame his game didn't translate well to the NBA, it must be hard to have been a rookie in Pat Riley's stricter days.
So what makes this OJ guy want to come to SC anyway?
Must be sad to grow up in these days of unlimited resources to historical material and still cannot get any facts straight.
It is also sad that people who only follow football having no clue what they are talking about when discussing college basketball.
First and foremost, Riley was not involved with the Miami Heat when Miner was there. He was in New York with the Knicks. Miner's problem was he never learned how to play defense. Then he blew out his knee and unfortunately, that was that.
As far as Trojan4life, have a clue. Yes the objective is to win championships, but we aren't going to turn down a player that can put the program on the map and lead to a larger base of quality recruits in the future just because he is staying for one year. In basketball, at least at the college level, 2 5-star recruits can propel a program to the final four.
In Mayo and Devon Jefferson, we have those 2 players. If USC makes a run in the tournament and fans show up at the arena, then future recruits will decide that USC is a prime program.
BTW, North Carolina has a mighty fine program, and they are constantly having players leave after only one or two years.
With the new NBA rule that a player must play one year of college, guys like Mayo are going to be available. If I can take a one year and out player each year and surround those guys with quality players that are going to stay for at least 3 years, then yes you can build a quality program.
And just to tell you how impressed the guys on the team are that Mayo is coming, Young stated he might just stick around for his senior year to play with Mayo. Everyone has assumed that Young was gone after this season.
Sounds like a pretty sound decision to me, don't you think?
Trojan4life,
This is a blessing to get such a great talent. This is great timing with a new arena opening. This will elevate USCs program. This in turn will attract recruits. Its a snow ball effect. Even if OJ is here for 1 year. He will provide a catalyst that could jump start this program.
He led his high school team to a couple of Ohio St championships so he is a winner. He is about winning. You are not seeing the silver linning in this Trojan4life.
The new NBA rules puts pressure to accept one year wonders. I agree that this wouldn't be sound as a "practice", but with a once every 10 year's type of a player...it's a wise decision.
It's LA...the media capital of the world...it's called exposure.

Okay, thanks for beating me up. While I am not a basketball expert, I can tell you that it's not the players at the school that bring in the recruits, it's the coaching staff, their system and the history of success. While USC has had its up years, it has never been a traditionally dominant basketball program and we all know that putting a pretty arena on the corner of Fig and Jeff does not constitute a program.
It's easy to through stones at me when I make a comment, and believe me I want nothing more to be wrong, but I don't believe I am. Why is Duke, NC and Kentucky and the like in it every year? If their players leave after 1-2 years as DBMITCH states, then it's not the players attracting the recruits. It's Coach K, Roy Williams and it's Tubby Smith that get the high quality players in the door. Players who they can develop and bring along in a system to be winners.
I don't think making a practice of this is wise. Look at teams who, in the NBA, draft the likely superstar and are successful at putting a moderate supporting cast. It's the exception. If I'm a quality player and I want to win a championship, this is not the management style I think that will lead me to a chance to cut down the net.
Carmelo Anthony re-established Syracuse as a Big East power. They new he was only going to stay one year, they gambled and it has paid off for them.
Also, Floyd isn't going anywhere. He's not going back to the NBA, he's not an NBA kind of coach. Where else is he going to coach? The NBA/Chicago spoiled him on the pleasures of living in a large market. I doubt he'll ever leave to go to a Kansas or UNC/SEC type program in a smaller market. Besides, he thinks they can compete for NC in at USC. And he can.
Trojan4life and USC fans:
With ALL due respect have you thought that Coach Floyd is trying to put the pieces together? Pete Carroll did the same thing. The first pieces have to come from your back yard(Southern California best basketball players). Once you got the fire started in the fire place you keep adding logs to keep you warm. Coach Floyd is trying very hard to keep the fire going. He has the arena-BRAND NEW ONE. Did you check the link I posted? USC basketball team has the second best recruiting class, just barely edged by Kansas. Doesn't that tell you that the fire is cooking? You people in LA need to fill the arena to complete the list of ingredients. You do NOT cook a good roast in two minutes, OK? It is just my humble two cents analogy!
dbmitch lighten up.
