It's Getting Ugly Out There
It looks like there is a blog war going on between Daily News media columnist Tom Hoffarth and USC play-by-play man Pete Arbogast.

Who's Tom Hoffarth? Just kidding he's that guy that Petros used to bring on his radio show whenever he couldn't get Wolfie. Seriously, do we really care about Hoffarth's rants and raves? Who is he anyways but a columnist. Just like those other columnists at the Daily Bruin aka L.A. Times, they think they are more important then they really are. I mean would our lives as readers of periodicals really be effected if Plashke (sp?), Adande, Simers, or Hoffarth just left their respective papers and dropped off the face of this earth..the answer is no.
As far as Arbogast is concerned, I loved him during Tuesday nites when he did the Trojan radio show with Petros. That was the best one hour of radio. So for you haters (Hoffarth) I like the homer Arbogast.
Ding...Ding...Ding...Ding
Hoffatth wins by DKO...Devastating Knock-Out via an awsome bitch-slap.
Keep swinging the hammer on Arbo Tom. Hilarious.
Arbo should just quit while he still has some dignity. Oh wait, he lost that too when he openly begged for someone to hire him the third time.
Does the Daily News still use stringers?
Who cares what Hoffarth says or writes? He thinks of himself as the Don Rickles of the keyboard. If he had half the talent of the people he disrespects, it might mean something. Instead, he knocks people who are so more talented. He ought to pick on somebody more on his level, like one of the sportswriters on the Daily Bruin.
Arbogast does a good enough job on Trojan radio broadcasts, but his "blog" - if that's what we have to call it - is unreadable. No self-respecting Trojan should waste their time with it.
the whole thing is amateurish. isn't LA the second largest media market in the US? really get to work or get another job.
Scott, I do believe we have a BIG game with notre dame this weekend.
Write about the game, about the domers, about Trojan lore, you are a good at it.
Take a side gig as a gossip journalist and satisfy that itch somewhere else.
Hoffarth's slamming of Arbogast is usually fairly interesting, but I really enjoyed his rip of L.A. Times media columnist Larry Stewart (the proud owner of a USC letterman's jacket) the most.
"Unless you completely water things down and try to be nice in your criticism of everyone in return for favors, you just end up like .... never mind."
Unemployment can do strange things to people. Hoffarth obviously isn't very sympathetic to Arbo's situation, but maybe he should be. Why mess with Karma? Newspapers are a dying business and no one is safe. The knives are already getting sharpened over at the LA Times...
I'll take Arbogast over any of the pansies from the Daily News or LA Times. The sportswriters today couldn't carry Jim Murray's or Allan Malamud's lunch.
Phil Jacks nailed it.
Who is Hoffarth to criticize? Furthermore, in his blog about Arbo he manages to disrepect numerous people. No wonder people don't want to talk to him.
What makes Arbo's campaigning even worse is that he is a shameless slacker. He appears to prefer his body surfing routine to networking and making connections. He shamelessly posted a plea for help on his blog that went something like "The guy who e-mailed me 2 years ago about a speaking engagement, please contact me." Effing PATHETIC! Way to plan for a rainy day, Arbo! Who needs pounding the pavement when you have scout.com?
Hoffarth was right on regarding Rory Markus, too. Arbo all but sniffed that Markus was OK, but that he (Arbo) would have more passion for the job, were it his.
Agree with Trojan Manny about some of LA's greats. Mal Florence is missed.
KM
Jim Murray would roll over in his grave if he saw the low estate to which the sports column at the once-great LA Times has sunk. T.J. Simers wouldn't have been hired as a copy boy during the golden age. The other clucks take turns rehashing drivel. Sad.
Man, I thought I knew everything about the Trojans. Who the hell is Tom Hoffarth??? I mean, I've at least heard of Pete Arbogast.
I know I live in Georgia, and therefore I may be not privvy to the "goings on" in California media, but damn. I guess there's a lot I don't know.
My novice advice to these guys: Get over it, the both of you. It's not like you guys are playing or coaching at SC. You're just the media. Arbogast and this guy Hoffarth both sound like they got a little growin' up to do.
Bring back "Hacksaw" Hamilton to do the SC broadcasts again! While no one's ego is bigger than Hamilton's, he does do a great play-by-play. I used to laugh when he said "everyone into the pattern" like thirty times during a game. He used to call games when The P was running the rock for SC. Maybe that's why they let him go -- he was a part of those painful Paul Hackett days.
By the way, both Pete Arbo and Chris Roberts call games like over-the-top homers. I love when Roberts calls a simple 25-yard field goal that even my grandmother could hit a "thing of beauty." What?
The #1 media market in the U.S. could do better than these two for their respective universities.
At least Arbogast uses his real name these days.
