Look Who Likes Florida
Florida coach Urban Meyer is against an Ohio State-Michigan rematch in the BCS title game and believes the Gators are more deserving than a certain other one-loss team in the championship picture.
``Realistically the one team out there is University of Florida, and probably Southern Cal. But Southern Cal got beat by an unranked team. We went to a hostile environment [at Auburn], played our heart out, we were on the 6-yard line and failed to get it done. . . . I think USC and Florida are the two teams that if they take care of business, deserve a shot.''
Meyer said if a rematch occurs, it should force a playoff system.
"I think that'd be unfair to Ohio State, and I think it'd be unfair to the country,'' Meyer said. ``"If that [rematch] does happen, it's over. All the presidents need to get together immediately and put together a playoff system, I mean like now, January, or whenever to get that done.''
Meyer even said if Michigan played and defeated Ohio State, the Wolverines should not be recognized as national champs.
"If I'm Ohio State, I go get a bunch of rings picked out and say, 'We won the national championship,'" Meyer said. "That's not right."

WTF is "Urban Meyer"? Is that a sequel to Urban Myth? I can't beleive he has the guts to say anything.. He just played a 2-8 D1-aa team.

People forget that OSU is a good team. Good but not great. However, what is the mark of a good team?
Winning all of the games against good opponents and having a crap day on the road against a good team?
Or...
Losing against one of the better opponents on your record and winning all the other games against clearly inferior opponents?
I think its way too funny that the SEC will be out of the BCS championship again. After they rewrote the rules after the USC debacle in 2003, all of the biased components toward the SEC that calculated the BCS rating [SOS (if every team in the league is 4-0 vs crap schools this got a huge boost in the SOS was calculated), quality wins (BCS championship was +1 for this scoring), extra game in conference championship (good for computers and quality wins)] the league has gotten nowhere close to the game.
All I know is that USC who played in 2004, 2005, should have in 2003 and MAYBE this years game (LOL!!!) has beaten a bid bad and ugly SEC team in the last 4 out of five years by a combined score of 170ish - 60ish.
Urban, go home to Utah and maybe you can get back to the BCS in that league. No lock for you to beast Free Shoe U this week.

I forgot to add that Scott probably likes them to. Likely has them rated 1 spot of ahead of USC... If only we could have played WVU to improve our SOS... maybe Scott would think different.

Apparently, YOU like Florida, too, Scott, after they brought down mighty Western Carolina you moved them ahead of Michigan. Your ballot is, as always, a joke.
Nice work.

There is a difference between Coach Meyer and Coach Carroll. Meyer is blustery and campaigning like crazy, and Carroll is just being cool. Since when does Florida belong in a championship game?-- South Carolina should have beaten them. I would not watch Florida vs Ohio State because it would be a blowout. I think SC would have a fighting chance against the Buckeyes. But first, there is business to take care of with that midwest squad and the West L.A. team.

I certainly like Pete's approach to the BCS. He understands that it is out of his control and potentially distracting to the team.
Urban Meyer should recall Tuberville's mistep when he began lobbying for Auburn to head to the BCS championship game. That very week his team was blasted by Arkansas.
As a fan, however, I can certainly look ahead to January 8th. I have already made the arrangements.
Beat ND!!

Urban Meyer has a point. But the ranked team that beat him was slaughtered at home by a team the SC slaughtered. How does he explain that?

Hey Urban...not only did you fall 6 yards short...you lost by double figures to Auburn. Yes the same Auburn that USC smoked in recent consecutive years including a shutout on that very field, the same Auburn who as yourself now schedules cupcakes to pad their victory total like Tulane, Buffalo and the Mississippi's.
So Urban when you plead your case the the BCS...don't forget to make them aware of your stirring victories against So Miss, Ky, Western Carolina, and Central Florida!

He's got a point about the Michigan rematch. No sense in arguing the SC v. Florida angle, as his gators are gonna get slaughtered by the Hogs.

UF may have been at the six yard line but SC was at the 2 1/2 yard line with the 2 point conversion on the line

Well that makes two Wolf; Your ballot last week was a joke! Fight On!

While I agree its should be between the Gators and Trojans for #2 should they both win out, Urban forgets one key element... Strength of Schedule. By Years end, USC's SOS will be #1 and UF will be #18-20. UF also plays only 4 road games.
If the SEC wants to get more respect (and the last few years is the first time they could ever cry), why don't their elite teams challenge themselves?
UF's non-conference schedule:
"The Mighty" Central Florida
Western Carolina
Souther "Swiss" Miss
FSU @ ROAD
SC's non-conference schedule:
Arkansas @ ROAD
Notre Dame
Nebraska
Here's a crazy fact.... UF's opponent's opponents have only played one (Cal) ranked non-conference team. The SEC is all about incest. They play crap in non-conf play, then they have 2 elite teams per division. And if one of them is foolish enough to schedule USC, they lose. Just ask Ark and Auburn.

Yeah, sure Florida deserves it over Southern California. Give me a break. Florida barely beat Tennessee and who did they kill last week? Enough said. The SEC is the most overhyped, arrogant conference ever.
Must I remind you Mr. Meyer that SC waxed Arkansas at Arkansas. Enough said. And just to let you know that it was not a fluke, remember that SC wasted Arkansas the year before. And the last time SC was in the rough, tough, Jordan Hare Stadium, they shut out Auburn, the team with Cambpell, Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams.
Face it, the SEC just does not measure up to the University of Southern California. MJD

I guess with that logic Florida State should hand out National Championship rings for 1996 when they beat Florida in late November then lost to them in the bowl game that followd.
Posted by: swilson | November 23, 2006 12:19 PM
The University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Central Florida, Western Carolina University....
If the University of Florida would like to be considered for a spot in the national championship game perhaps it should stop playing directional schools in 25% of its games.
As for that ever so powerful S.E.C. schedule...
USC 50
SEC champion Arkansas 14
AT Arkansas.
Case closed.

IF it comes down to USC or Florida, Gators learn dark side of scheudling Cental U and Western U, etc.

Aside from Coach Meyer contradicting himself with his statement above about USC being deserving and not deserving of facing Ohio State in the BCS title game, he forgets that USC has run the course on a very difficult game schedule. We'll see how his team does on an Arkansas team that USC spanked earlier this season. Although there is a lot of talk about Arkansas being a better team now than when USC played them, that notion isn't calculated in the BCS rankins.

right on Mr Picks...and SC is also a better team than when they played at Ark.

Stephanie,
Excellent comment. Great info re: "opponents' opponents"

Once upon a time, Tommy Tuberville whined about the need for a playoff. Then he lost to Arkansas. The End.

And this is where Displaced Trojan's "Southern Inferiority Complex" comes into play.

This Urban Character needs to be put down

Hey Urban!
You want to be taken seriously as a national contender, stop scheduling cupcake teams like Western Carolina, University of Central Florida and U of Southern Mississippi.
