Poll Position
If USC beats UCLA, it will be the fourth year in a row that they will finish a regular season ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the AP Poll. Prior to the current streak, they had not finished a regular season ranked that high since 1972 (1).
In fact, since the AP rankings started in 1936, they finished the regular season ranked No. 1 or No. 2 only four times, before their current streak: 1962 (1), 1967 (1), 1968 (2), and 1972 (1).
To put another way, from 1936 through 2002, SC finished the regular season ranked 1 or 2 four times; if SC wins Saturday, they will have doubled the number of all-time end-of-regular season rankings in the AP top two for the school, from 2003 through 2006.

All hail Pete Carroll? Is that what you're saying?
Why don't you just say they equalled, in the last 4 seasons, the same they accomplished in the prior 67 seasons. Or that Pete Carroll singly accomplished as much as the 10 coaches collectively that preceded him.
All hail Pete Carroll!
Pete, you are a legend in the making. Keep it up and stay with as for a long time please, we don't know of anybody as good as you out there! :)
What was USC's position in l978 and who had to lose?
Anyone seen the USC and Pete Carroll bashers that began to crawl out of the gutter and onto this Blog after the Oregon State loss? You remember the ones that were proclaiming the “Fall of Troy and that “USC was just another Miami and was “beginning a downward spiral.
FYI Haters - USC just beat Notre Dame for the 5th time in a row, won the Pac 10 Conference for a 5th time in the row, and is guaranteed a 5th straight BCS Bowl appearance...oh yeah, AND USC is one win over the Bruins away from its 4th straight National Championship Game in a row! ...the 2nd National Championship Game without Chow…and I almost forgot, USC is in a rebuilding year.
PS – Scott, it is about time you joined the USC bandwagon this year! Also, Michigan is clearly No. 3 ahead of Florida. Did you see the Florida State v. Florida Game? You should actually watch Florida play before you put them at No. 3…they are nothing special.
Pete is the man! He looks like he is having so much fun it is contagious. Gotta love his attitude and of course his ridiculous amount of wins during his tenure at SC. Fight On Pete!
All this with a GPA from you of 2.62. Don't you feel stupid? You are dealing with the best run of all time and to you it only deserves an average grade. Actually if you really are stupid you won't realize what mistakes you are making and won't feel stupid.
What about 1978 and 1979? In '78 USC finished 1st in the UPI poll and 2nd to Alabama in the AP. In '79 USC finished 2nd to Alabama in both polls.
