What's next? An Alpo commercial?
My colleague at the Daily News, Tom Hoffarth, points out today that USC analyst Paul McDonald has become little more than former Tonight Show sidekick Ed McMahon the way he constantly chuckles at homer comments during radio broadcasts. http://www.dailynews.com/sportrs/ci_4634623
At least in the 1970's he was second fiddle to Charles White. And laughing is better than obfuscating for Paul Hackett.

That's not what I got from that article at all.
I don't get how you manage to take Hoffarth's comment that Paul sounded like EdMcMahon on that one particular call and turn it into a Hoffarth saying that Paul McDonald is EdMcMahon all the time remark.
"the way he constantly chuckles..." - Where did Hoffarth say that he constantly chuckles??? Sloppy Scott, very sloppy and very misquoted.
How in the world did you take a single statement by a sportswriter and manipulate it into a definition of a sportscasters entire career? How else was Paul McDonald supposed to respond to the combination of such a ridiculous call by Arbogast and the strange sequence of events on the field. Should he have reprimanded Arbo on-air?
I've noticed that for a couple seasons now.
He should change his name to Paul McMahon.
I like Arbo and Paul McDonald personally. They are both mediocre announcers.
I miss Keith Jackson.
And I do enjoy your writing.
Evidently, Mr. Hoffarth and Mr. Patrick have never listened to Cal Bears telecasts by homer broadcaster Joe Starkey. Every chance he gets, he's taking a dig at SC, Pete Carroll, making references to O.J. or just dissing Southern California in general. A few weeks ago I heard him refer to the "southern california sprawl" when describing the L.A. area.
Starkey's of course most famous for his frenetic call of The Play in the 1982 Cal Stanford game saying: "And The band is out on the field!" and "the most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heartrending, exciting, thrilling finish in the history of college football!"
Oh brother.
The Bruins have TJ Slimmers and we have Paul MaC.
I've always much favoured Ian Dark over Pete Arbogast.
I like Arbo and Paul a lot, and I have heard a lot of sports announcers over the years. They both have pleasant voices, and they work off of each other well. Also, they add excitement to the game, the Washington State game ending being one of my favorites.
Gosh, it seems most sports fans are among the most negative people I have ever observed
Radio play-by-play guys are supposed to paint the picture that the listeners can only imagine (without the benefit of TV).
Pete leaves way too much for the listener to fill in on their own....that's a style better suited for TV.
Angels baseball/USC basketball announcer Rory Markus is a hidden gem.
