Grade Woes
USC kicker Troy Van Blarcom was ruled academically ineligible Thursday although the kicker was trying to change a grade to regain his eligibility. Offensive tackle Matt Spanos is also unlikely to be eligible today although he was also trying to change a grade.
Van Blarcom, who is the Trojans’ kickoff specialist, will not be able to play against Michigan in the Rose Bowl unless he can change a grade, which he was in the process of trying to do late Thursday. He needed a 2.3 grade-point average in the fall semester to maintain his eligibility.
``He is in jeopardy,’’ USC coach Pete Carroll said of Van Blarcom. ``We’ll find out (today) if he’s made it.’’
Without Van Blarcom, USC would turn to sophomore David Buehler for kickoffs. Buehler notably kicked a 49-yard field goal against California earlier this season.

Dumb ass. Like I said, USC kickers suck on the field and in the classroom.

CHANGE + GRADE = NCAA PROBATION.........
Just taking a quick read of how Scott wrote this, leads one to believe the mighty football program is above classwork once again. Maybe Scott needs to explain what "changing a grade" really means.

And another thing.....
I just don't get it. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't an athlete suppose to maintain a 2.0 GPA to remain eligible on the team? How hard is it to maintain a 2.0 GPA these days?
I remember skating my way through college because in my youth I had a major attitude about going to school. I wouldn't study much, just enough to get by. Skipped alot of classed or showed up at the tail end of a class to get the assignments. Kept my studying and reading to a minimum and I still was able to maintain a 3.0 GPA. I also remember taking a Linguistics class which to my surprise was 80% football players and the professor advise the class at the beginning of the semester that "if you attend every class, you will receive an A". This professor had everyone read from the textbook during class (sad to say, the majority of the class could not read), all exams (including the final exam) were open book and the questions were open for discussion during the exam and the answers were given.
My point is, it takes very little effort to maintain a 2.0 GPA and it leads me to believe that some athletes just do not do any classwork to try and get by, so who is responsible for this? Are athletes that arrogant towards school these day???
Help me out here someone......

How can you not get a 2.3?
Posted by: tim | December 22, 2006 08:18 AM
Scott: Help us out as someone who's at practice all day. Why do highly ranked (and highly intelligent) Thomas Herring and Charles Brown not get reps? They were MUCH MUCH MUCH better recruits at scout and rivals and can an least get Cs? If Ruel spoke earlier this year about the great futures of Brown and Butch Lewis (who's redshirting), why can't Brown at least play now? What's so good about Spanos?

Unbelievable lack of discipline. Van Blarcom has had issues since high school, so I guess it is not a total suprise. Scott, you prepared us for Spanos in your reports on the delays. Sounds like the coaching staff new about this since Monday.

This team is a joke!!!

I don't care too much about Van Blarcom's eligibility but I am wondering if you're going to run a retraction of your ridiculous misquoting of Norm Chow. You are to beat writers what Lane Kiffin is to offensive coordinators. Happy holidays!

How do players fail to achieve passing grades at this cupcake school?

I'm glad Matt Spanos didn't pass his classes. Look forward to meeting Kyle Williams....

Van Blarcom has had academic problems since high school and was initially denied admission to USC. After some creative submissions over the summer after high school, he was finally accepted to USC just days before the fall 200 semester. He has had major academic problems at USC ever since.
After his freshman year, Pete Carroll met with Van Blarcom and his father and told them that Troy should transfer as he could not handle the academic demands at USC. Obviously Van Blarcom did not agree and remained at USC, promising that he would get his grades in order.
As for why he needed a 2.3 GPA rather than a 2.0: he was already on academic probation at USC and needed a 2.3 to get his overall GPA above 2.0 to remain eligible.

The grade problem for some of the USC players doesn't surprise. When I was attendinfg USC, one of the starrunning back came up to me while I was at the libray and ask me how do you use the copy machine - I had to show him how to put a coin in and then press a button.

Kids who are good enough football players to make it to Ohio State, USC, Florida etc were the best players not only at their high school, but probably one of the best in their particular state. They all think they are going to make money in the NFL, and many, if not most, are only at college to facilitate that dream. The only problem is that out of 110 1-A schools, with 85 players, or about 10,000 kids, only about 100 will make it in the pros. That is 1%. I think one's odds are better trying to make it in the classroom

We may have been juicing, but at least we kept the team GPA at a reasonable level.

what ever happened to a gentlemans "c" at this institution
Posted by: johnny | December 22, 2006 12:52 PM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
This is what happens when you recruit people who don't belong in college. It makes me laugh, twice a year this seems to be a huge topic for you guys. I remember over the summer when everyone was rejoicing when all your delinquents got through admissions. Pom Pom has no shame, all the kids are dumb enough to believe that they will be the next Reggie Bush. Enjoy your whipping on the 1st. CHOKE ON!! By the way, Maurice Drew is way better than Reggie "free house" Bush. Over-rated....Over-rated....Over-rated.....USC is all self gloss. I hope Pom Pom sticks around so we can kick him around next year too. Merry Christmas!!

With all the tutors and help available for athletes, it's simply a lack of effort and appreciation for the privelege and honor of a scholarship to a major DI school that leads to ineligibility. It's ridiculous. It does come with the territory though if your policy on recruiting doesn't set a "lower standard," which USC's does not. So, it comes with the territory - you get some kids UCLA could not, but they have these issues. In the end though, a 2.0 is just not that hard to get, especially with all the help out there. It's just effort and selfishness.

Matt H,
If they were better right now, they'd be on the field.
Like every other unit, it's a competition. Obviously, Brown, who is a better athlete, is just not a better player than Williams right now due to lack of experience, or, he would be ahead of him. It's really that simple. The coaches want to win more than we do. They will play the guys that give them the best chance to win.

How does a f@#$ing kicker not get a 2.0? All he needs to do is kick and study!
Posted by: JJH4USC | December 22, 2006 02:28 PM
Miguelito - still hilarious - and so bitter for a fan of the team that won the rivalry game. How angry was he when UCLA was losing??
It also looks like he would probably be on probation for making up nonsense phrases like "self gloss". I'm not sure what it really means but I'll take a shot...
The "self gloss" of USC's multiple Heisman trophies and national championships feels so comforting when I go to sleep at night. Was that used in the right context?
One win in an already lopsided rivalry and this is the nonsense we have to put up with. I hope he comes back after next year's Bruin beatdown. It scares me to imagine the hateful bile he'll be spewing though. I mean just look at how angry he is after a victory.
Enjoy it Miguelito - it doesn't happen very often. UCLA 13 - USC 9. There feel better?? Enjoy the Emerald Nuts & Berries Bowl.

"I hope Pom Pom sticks around so we can kick him around next year too."
miguelito, I guess that means you strap it on. What position and what# are you?
Posted by: roger | December 22, 2006 04:12 PM
Hey Miguelito - remember Junior Lemau'u? It happens at your school too. Now go away.
Posted by: Greg B | December 22, 2006 06:39 PM
Roger, that little maricon Miguelito doesn't strap it on. He bends over for his boyfriend. I'm sick and tired of this fruit on this blog. I want to whack him and leave him like how they did to Vito Spatafore on the last season of "The Sopranos" - with a pool stick up his rather stretched out ___hole. Here's one guy who'll be rooting for Grandpa Bowden next Wed. in Miguelito's hometown of Frisco.

I've been not flaming for some time now - trying to post honest/genuine takes - but I will say one thing to Greg B's post: Toledo era was shameful in many respects, but under Karl Dorrell, the man may be or not be many things, but we do not have those problems anymore. And when we DO have a problem (the 1 or 2 we've had, ala Medlock) the punishment is significant....no laps around the field and loss of pizza for getting busted for prostitution. It simply is a fact that Pete runs USC with an NFL attitude. It translates to some wins, but it has its negatives.
Posted by: ReelBruin | December 22, 2006 09:21 PM
wow a bunch of haters, I mean it is dumb why they didn't qualify but it doesn't matter to much talent on the team, and if they suck then how do loose so much talent and go to the Rose Bowl, I bunch of dumb kids just making dumb comments
don't get mad cuz the USC kids are going to the league after the junior year making crazy cash

Hey Miguelito-
You better get back to your job of flipping burgers at McDonalds!
Wait til next year! One win in seven years is a great accomplishment?!?!
HA! HA!

from hearing about this with the two football players trying to change there grades, i think maybe its from all football practices, i heard practices are so hard that all they worrie about is wining the super bowl, if the people really cared they would start yelling at them to get there grades up instead of yelling at them cause they lost a game
