Norm On USC

Former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow was interviewed on 570-AM today. Here's a couple quotes:
``(Pete Carroll) wanted to get things done a certain way and it worked out well for everybody. You know, it's just too bad because I think they probably have the talent to maybe be playing for that fourth national championship in a month.''
On offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin and assistant coach Steve Sarkisian:
``I know (UCLA defensve coordinator) DeWayne Walker may be better than both of those guys.''

Does Norm know anyone of his caliber that is looking???? We do have the talent to be in the NCG! But it was not to be this year.

Oh, Norm, show a little more class than that. Why didn't you come out and criticize Walker when Notre Dame tore through them on the last drive of that game? Maybe because you didn't have an axe to grind in that situation.

so he speaks the truth

whats wrong with that

I wish we still had NC

Norm sounds a little bitter to me. This team was not ready to win an NC. Next year is the year.

I was completely misquoted. I never said Dwayne Walker may be better than both Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian. I said he was much better than those two amateurs.

Miss me now Petey?

gotta admit D. Walker's Defense pulled the choke of the year vs. Notre Dame..hmm...Norm is venting...

Looks like there is still bad blood between those guys. Still would like to know what went on at the 2005 championship game when Kiffin and Chow got into it.

Scott,
You'd better listen to that interview again. Chow says he "knows" Walker maybe (one word) better than Kiffen or Sark, not that Walker IS better.
Misleading reporting, very uncharacteristic of you.

Garrett got it backwards. He should have hired Norm as Head Coach and Pete as the Defensive Coordinator.

Norm is right. Walker is an NFL caliber coach and SHOULD be coaching in the NFL right now. I can't believe he's staying at UCLA next year.

Well at least we get the truth from Norm. I dont see anything negative in his comments of Pete.

He's being truthful about Walker being better thank Sark and Kiffin. Actually Walker is much better. I'm not sure why Norm only refers to Sark as one of those guys. I know Sark left USC during Norms last year here. I'm not sure if there may have been some negatives between them at that time that we don't know about.

"``I know (UCLA defensve coordinator) DeWayne Walker may be better than both of those guys.''

did he say "may be better" as in walker is better than kiffen/sark...

or did he say chow knows walker "maybe more" than he knows kiffin/sark.

there's a distinction.

Did you guys listen to the entire interview? He was classy towards Pete. I generally enjoy Scott's posts, but he definitely chose to muckrake a bit and cut and paste the most negative portions of the interview. For context sake, I hope Scott paints the remainder of the interview as well.

Hey Scott..I listened to the podcast..more than once....it's " I know Dwayne Walke maybe better than both those guys"..saying that he knows them better than Lane and Steve, not that Dwayne is better....Regardless ..LAme needs to change his playcalling..or go! Throw the ball to C.J. more ..Go Sc!!

Rather than dissing sarkiff, chow was saying "I [personally] know Dewayne Walker MAYBE better than [either] of those guys [know dewayne] (as chow coached a year w/ him), and Dewayne's one heck of a football coach and that's why it wasn't too surprising when Dewayne did what he did with UCLA".

It's funny how a guy that's affraid of getting a head coaching job is willing to run his mouth... if he's so confident that the new coordinators are so bad... why did he not go after the ASU job and instead stay for an NFL pension?? I'm sure he wouldn't look like a genius having Kiff and Sark offenses kicking his teeth in annually!!!!

My two cents:
They knew Hickman and the other UCLA DE were going to blitz/pass rush like crazy. The question is are they prepared to expect the same thing from Michigan? Every one commenting on ESPN is saying that MI is going to use the UCLA/Walker blue print. This is the chance for these two OC's to put-up or the same firing squad from post UCLA shock will be ready to unload and trust me it won't be pretty.
Thanks

"For context sake, I hope Scott paints the remainder of the interview as well."

Hey scjake, don't hold your breath.

We'd like to have a USC beat reporter but we get is a tabloid writer.

Scott, at least quote Chow correctly. Your clever switch of the words "maybe" and "may be" was nasty. Chow is a class guy and a great coach. We lost to UCLA and that's it. Move on. We beat Michigan and all is forgotten. But that's how it is everywhere in football.

Unbelievable! You have no class Scott. After listening to the podcast, it's obvious that you took his comments out of context.

Wolf, whats the deal? How come you take every attempt to take a strike against USC? Some beat writer you are. There people that would die to have your job and do it well. But instead you disgrace the profession by constantly posting stuff like this... its a sad thing

I am glad some of your readers clarified the meaning of Chow's comments, because when I first read your version, Scott, I was put-off that Chow would say something like that-- very uncharacteristic of this dignified man. Thanks readers.

Troymex65,

I like Norm Chow as much as the next guy but don't be ridiculous. The head Coach is the face of the program.

Norm Chow could never match the charisma, fire and excitement of Pete - three things that make US Cstand out from the other programs. Just read anything the recruits say when they come to USC to visit - they can't fathom the energy and passion that the coaches and players bring to practices - that is all PC. The program and practices would have an entirely different tone with Norm at the head. The "competition" attitude that USC shows in recruiting, practice and on the field on Saturdays is a direct reflection of PC and would have been absent had Norm been made Head Coach.

Just move on already. Norm Chow would have left eventually and PC just accelerated it a bit. PC wants to be here and wants to become the face of USC much the way Wooden became UCLA basketball.

You know, I really like a man that calls it the way it is.
Thank you Norm.

Chow was saying he know Walker better than Kiff or Sark know Walker. He wasn't criticizing anyone.

Norm is right, he is better than Sar-Kiff. Oh wait, Dwayne Walker is better than Sar-Kiff. Umm Norm, will Walker be your Defensive Cord when you are a Head Coach. By the way, when are you going to be a Head Coach. The past is the past, move on Norm.

Yeah, Pom Pom Pete sure is the gold standard for coaches........he ran Walker and Chow out of town, he is starting to look like his old NFL self now that the REAL coaches are leaving. Pom Pom is nothing but an overpaid cheerleader. He will prove his ineptness in the Rose Bowl.

again, Scott is stirring the pot w/ some mis-reporting (out of context stuff), but the truth remains... if Norm were here, we would be playing for our 4th straight NC guaranteed. 3 pt and 4pt loss is stopping it, and the offensive gameplan and playcalling in both were average at best.

To everyone who thinks Norm is saying he "knows" Walker better than Lane and Sark. (As opposed to say Walker is better than Sark.)

He doesn't. He coached Sark at BYU and then they coached together what, three years at USC. That is at least five years they spent together (since Sark did not begin his college career at BYU.) Chow certainly knows Sark better than he knows probably any collegiate level assistant coach. I think its clear he is being critical.

The context of Coach Chow's remarks were not correctly stated here. I get the sense that people are alarmed by what he said, but without having first hand knowledge we are left with Scott making a serious mistake in word usage. He said he knew Dwayne Walker more not that he was a better coach.

Looks like the Rose Bowl is a win-win. Beat Michigan and it's great. Lose to Michigan, ala UCLA, and adios to Stifflin. What's Walt Harris doing over the holidays?

After reading this post, I listened to the podcast myself. Chow was classy and honest throughout the interview. His use of "maybe" inferred that he knows Walker better than Kiffen and Sark know Walker. It was not a reference to their coaching skills. He did not take the bait when the hosts asked him to rate the job performance of his successors.

Scott, why would you take those Norm Chow comments out of context? Do you have some axe to grind? Or just enjoy controversy?

USC could be playing for another title game if their schedule was re-sorted. Once powerhouse rivals in Florida, Miami and Florida State play their anual game on the first weekend in September. I'm suggesting that USC plays ucla in the first week of the schedule to elliminate the reoccurence of playing two rival games in a row. The significance of a change in schedule would and could be a major factor in recent, past, and future championship ramafications. In this years rankings, their was at least seven different changes in the number two slot, with USC being in the second or third postiton on more than one occasion. The point is not that you won't loose, rather, when. I admire coach Carrol ont the job he has performed considering all the coaches that have left the program. I not a big fan of the offensive cordinators either, but once we start to likeing them they're GONE.

Hey Roger,

I think we will be able to help you out with that little problem. Start calling Walt.

-Detroit Rob

Scott-
Why do you always look for the negative story or paint every story in the worst way possible? Why can't you look for what is good and working? There are so many great things happening at USC and you always prefer to report the worst-case scenario. Why must you be so negative and discouraging?

Wally,

Grow a set, you are starting to sound like a Bruin. Rescheduling because of one 13-9 loss to UCLA? Come on. This is USC, we take on all comers, anytime, anywhere. This is our 5th Straight BCS Bowl, we have had 3 Heismans under Carroll, 3 NC Game appearances (2 Victories), and 5 straight Pac 10 Championships, and gone 10-2 against Notre Dame and UCLA under Carroll...all under our current scheduling.

Why don't we start making all non-conference games home games like the SEC or schedule like the Big Ten and not play two conference teams every year (this year maybe we would have missed Oregon State and UCLA), or start playing Division I-AA teams to make it easier for us to get to the Championship Game.

We did not make the NC Game this year because despite some flashes of brilliance and a boat load of young talent we were not “quite in Ohio State’s league THIS year (next year is going to be a completely different story). This is a rebuilding year and we still won the Pac 10 and are playing in the Rose Bowl.

This is USC, when we have great teams we win... period.

Wally,
I have to agree with JJH4USC. one loss in 8 years is hardly the end of the world. the ruins got up for one game, so what? Cheer yourself up and check out our recruit status on www.wearesc.com. Fight on!

Eh, maybe mo' bettah eh Brah? You folks forget that Norm is a kanaka ( Hawaiian born to you katonks) and maybe Norm's King English needs some work. But clearly, clearly he was saying that he knows DeWayne better on a personal basis then the other two guys. Say do you think losing out on a NCS game by not beating a clearly inferior (but obviously more inspired and motivated) team constitutes a choke? Suck it up brah! Betta get motivated for Michigan in a totally meaningless Rose Bowl.

Thanks Mike. HUGE signing today! I heard that after the 13-9 loss that Everson actually said he was going to sign with UCLA over USC b/c it was clear that it was the start of UCLA’s National Championship run and the shift of the balance of power in LA college football...yeah right!

Tommy, What the f@#$ did you say? Anyone speak stoned surfer that can translate?...miguelito?... Hermosa-adjacent Bruin?

You Scott Wolf are simply a joke.

Nice job scotty. To bad that this conversation was broadcast for all the world to listen to so we know you are full of crap. Stick to eavsdropping on conversations about Alan Bradford at practice. At least that way you cant be discredited like this in public.

This one tops your "news" that CJ Spiller is a USC commit and Lendale failed a drug test.

JJ...I owe you money or what? Brudda it's like dis...if you can't motivate your team to beat the Bruins with BCS NC game on the line, then how do you expect to beat Michigan (who are mightily pissed off) when the Rose Bowl means nothing? Eh, maybe Marc Tyler should reconsider where he wants to go? Maybe Stefon Johnson should transfer with that Jersey kid going to Rutgers! Heart Brah! Heart! Character too! You pupule or what?

Thank you Tommy. The first hald of your email makes some good points.

-JJHowlie4USC

How can you expect journalism coming out of a USC graduate? Scott Wolf is a joke and you all fell for his misquotation.

For once, listen to the podcast of the interview yourself instead of reading the paraphrase from this joker.

Chow said he knows (i.e., personally familiar with) Walker "maybe" (one word) better than K&S know Walker.

After all, Chow worked with Walker for a few years, while K&S only worked with Walker for one year. What Chow meant was that had K&S been more familiar with Walker, they would not have been caught by surprise and schooled by Walker last month. [So, what Chow implied was not that Walker was better than K&S, but that Chow himself was much better than K&S, and would have anticipated what Walker threw at USC last month.]

But this may be too much for a joker beat "writer" in Wolf and SC-edumacated readers.

In any event, good luck against Big Blue. You'll need it.

Why can't we just get along???? NC and PC = national Championships!!!! PC alone = near mis at being no.1.

Get a decent Offensive co-rodinator!

Norm called it.
The emperor has no clothes with an OC such as Lame Kiffin!
