Since we are on the subject of number changes, could anyone explain why SC has two players with the number '10'?

Because teams frequently have more players than two-digit numbers. Therefore you can have a #10 on offense (booty) and a #10 on defense (cushing.) As long as they don't play at the same time there is not a problem.

Because one is on offense and one is on defense...

I've always believed it's because SC retires every Heisman winner's #. Therefore we run out of 'em, and some players have to share. If we keep winning Heismans under Coach Carroll, soon we'll have to have three players to a number (two scholarship, one walk-on). Not that I'm complaining.

Even though we lost to 'em in '97 (14-0) & '98 (30-10), Go 'Noles! Beat those stinkin' Teddy Bears!

because according to NCAA rules it is ok to have players with the same number as long as 1 plays offense and 1 plays defense. Most teams chose not to do this as it causes confusion. But USC allows it.

even with 7 retired numbers that still leaves 92 numbers available. On the road we sure don't dress 92 guys; at home I'm sure that we do but how many play; i guess I would think that we could avoid the duplicity somehow

Gotta give CJ a few props here..he's moving right up into some pretty big shoes to fill donning the #2!

Fight On CJ, go for it.

#2? Isn't that a WR number? Who cares? That is all CJ Gable is worried about? "oh I gotta change my number" After this train wreck of a season? Maybe he should be more worried about trying to up his 3.9 ypc......

Ok...let me get this straight...we lost to 2 unranked teams, almost lost to alot of others, our O-line was made to look like a bunch of 12 year olds by UCLA, our play calling is horrible and we had a game where our only TD came by a fake field goal, we are about to be stomped on national TV by Michigan, we have no FB to speak of or RB who produces...and all he is worried about is his uniform number?

PH55 said:

But who cares? What's the problem with having two numbers? It doesn't confuse other teams, they know who is who. Why not let a kid wear a number he wants unless it has been retired? Don't make college football follow stupid rules like the NFL. I bet TrojanHorse also wishes Reggie wore a number in the 20's so it was a true "running back number." And of course all our receivers should be in the 80s so get new numbers DJ and Steve.

Ron Yary, who says all Gable cares about is his uniform number? It's not like he scheduled a press conference to announce this ground breaking decision. Wolf is just running out of info to report, so this is the best he could come up with. My guess is he was told when he committed that after Smith leaves he'll get the #2.
