QB Time

| | Comments (35) |

USC quarterback John David Booty never seemed to have enough time to throw the ball to wide receivers Steve Smith or Dwayne Jarrett, and that became a problem because the Trojans could never run.
``They stuffed us,’’ Booty said. ``Flat out. I don’t like to admit that.’’
By the way, it's disgraceful that a USC team, favored to make the BCS title game, resorted to a quick snap on the fourth-and-2 to start the fourth quarter that became a 4-yard loss for tailback C.J. Gable. If USC can't gain two yards or one yard (and that was also the case) then something is terribly wrong.

Congratulations to UCLA and Scott Wolf. You both got something you desperatly wanted...A win over USC and a loss by USC

Yes, USC was knocked out of the "NCG" by fUCLA with the encouragement and delight of Wolf. But remember, USC is still the PAC 10 Conf. Champs and is headed to the Rose Bowl, while ACLU is headed to the Emerald [City] bowl? to face off with the Friends of Dorothy.

So before you get too full of yourselves, enjoy the moment, for it is fleeting.

We'll be back. Will you?

Palmer and Leinart demonstrated growth in their first season under Pete's system. Booty was consistent throughout the whole season, never showed growth.

I would like Pete to open up the QB job in the Spring. I can’t take another year of Booty.

Lame has cost us 2 championships so far and counting, how long do we have to repay Pete's debt to Monte?

what was that??? An offense that was supposed to be "smart and disciplined", committing an unreasonable amount of penalties for no reason...bad play calling is the understatement of the last 3 years...embarrassing...once again, USC makes a second string u.g.l.y. quarterback a legend...bruce in the hills of anacrime

Jose Gonzalez said:

I would definitely have to blame the loss on USC's offensive game plan or lack of one. Seems like their offensive creativity left with Norm Chow's departure. Kiffin cannot handle the play calling he is to young and inexperienced. They need to bring in a veteran coach that knows what the heck to call on fourth and a few. How many more shaky offensive plans is Carroll going to allow from this guy?!?!

ESPN: USC had its chance and blew it; now, if the debate is between Michigan and Florida--and Florida beats Arkansas--Ohio State's opponent in over a month should be Orange--not Maize--and Blue.

Mark Sanchez should be the starting QB from now on! I am sick of this incompetent, 'clumsy' QB. Does he not know how to tie his damn shoes?

He keeps falling all on his on...clutz!

Start Sanchez, else have AD Mike Garrett fire PC and bring in Shula!

What time is it?

SANCHEZ TIME!

Pete Carroll's arrogance caught up with him. Fourth and ones did not work. The refs did not bow dow to his whining. Karma is a bitch - you run up the score one year, the same team knocks you out of the national championship the next year. Funny how that works.

Hey, GoUofM:

If Karma really is in action, by this time tomorrow you'll be lining up for Rose Bowl tickets.

You had your shot at Ohio State, and you lost. Now it's Florida's turn.

stuff happens, UCLA D played well.. they've been good all year, I'll give them a pass

Finally when my 5 yo asks why they didn't look very good today and then follows that up immediately with, why didn't they practice for this game, its quite obvious that we were not only outcoached but out prepared

I attended USC from 1988-1999, from Peete to Palmer. I have to agree: Booty isn't likely to get us there. He really didn't show much improvement this season that i could see. If the loss mid season didn't light a fir under him, then probably nothing will. I think we need a taller guy in that position. How tall is Sanchez?

Felipe said:

Dear Coach Carroll,

PLEASE OPEN THE QB POSITION FOR COMPETITION IN THE SPRING!
I AGREE WITH KARL, I CAN'T TAKE ANOTHER YEAR OF BOOTY EITHER.

SINCERELY,

P.S. HEY COACH, START TREATING THE UCLA DIFFERENTLY. ITS NOT LIKE ANY OTHER GAME.

Trojan Wildcat said:

Booty played scared the entire game. Any quaterback can throw the ball into the ground or out of bounds. He should have been replaced in mid-season. But it would have been an injustice to Sanchez to put him in now. Hopefully Sanchez will be the starter at the end of spring training. I hope Booty goes pro, but I doubt any team will draft him.

Mitch said:

Okay, Okay, coach Carroll, you've paid you debt to Monte Kiffin. It's time for Lame Kiffin to move on. He can't get the car out of second gear. This offense has no imagination whatsoever; how about start moving in some personnel packages in for the situation...One more thing; OPEN UP THE QUARTERBACK POSITION NEXT SPRING. WE ARE TIRED OF WAITING FOR BOOTY TO OPEN IT UP..

John Schwan said:

We were out coached period. This was not about Booty, the offensive line, running backs...etc. Pete knew the UCLA defensive coordinator had the game plan to stop our pro style offense. Our offensive game plan reflected our arrogance, incompetence, and/or lack of preparation time and cost us the game.

LAWYER JOHN said:

Is there any animal on earth less loyal than a sports fan? Lose a game, and you are a bum. Excuse me, but the coaches voted John David Booty the best quarterback in the Pac-10 for 2006. I take their opinion over any ol' sports fan. Booty and Offensive Coordinator Kiffin did not lose the game. The Offensive line is probably more responsible for the loss than anything. We could not run, and Booty, except for a few times, was not allowed time enough to plant his feet in preparation for the pass. Also, having been at the game, I can report that it was one of the most emotional crowds I have ever experienced, and UCLA was feeding off that. Give credit where it is due-- that was a great effort by the Bruins' defense (although not totally surprising because they were No. 1 in the Pac-10 versus the run). Another factor was four tough games in a row, each an elimination game, probably caught up with the Trojans. Not that their effort was not there, nor their heart, but it was hard for the offense, at least, to match the almost maniacal emotions of the Bruin defense. Finally, I have always felt that this young team was a year away from true greatness. Who believes that they won't be great next year (although traveling to ND, Cal, Nebraska, and Oregon probably will not bring forth an undefeated season). I thought the year was quite exciting, especially the two losses (where I personally experienced and witnessed crowd emotions beyond belief).

Michael said:

You know its funny how no one seems to complain when you win...yet now that SC has lost to the evil-doers of Westwood, here comes the excuses and complaining!

I have been to every home game and, when playing in the Rose Bowl against UCLA, I've been there too...when? Since 1981, when my dad took me to my first game!

I was there yesterday, and USC just didn't have any emotion. I don't know if playing Cal, Oregon and ND was too much or if they were thinking ahead to Glendale, but no emotion against a fired up UCLA team and crowd isn't gonna win you games.

I also have to say that Lane just hasn't had the style or creativity to ensure big wins. Yet if you look back to last week's game against ND, wow! What a difference...where was the fire and explosion on offense?

I'll tell ya where it was....it was in the explosion of the UCLA defensive front! If the OL of SC can't pick up their men, then Booty won't have time to throw...if Booty, who is use to having some time to throw, can't make his decisions quicker, well, then you get balls off their mark, tipped passes and a QB who didn't look comfortable all game.

The Rose Bowl is where we'll be and hopefully we see the Trojans of the ND game show up and send the other team packing...

Defense was great this year...just no offense. Guess PC doesn't deserve Coach of the Year after all?

Gary said:

It's not about emotion. John McKay once remarked "my wife Corky is real emotional, and she can't play football worth a damn."

This is what it boiled down to:

1. Undisciplined and ineffective play by the O-line.

2. Inability to generate any running game. Again.

3. Booty's immobility and lack of "touch." I don't give a crap that the guy can throw a frozen rope, can he consistently put a catchable ball where it needs to be? Doesn't look like it.

4. A pretty good effort by the defense squandered by a complete meltdown on offense.

Eddie HOA said:

Hey Lawyer John and Michael,

I guess all the guys who have been complaining about USC's offense for the last two years gets a pass and we can keep complaining. And if your are going to blame the o-line I guess you are going to ahve to fire Pat Ruel because he is in charge of that one.

Here is my point. BAck when Chow was o-coordinator he scripted the first like 20 plays. Why? Because he did enough studying of the opponents defense that he knew what they were going to do and had offensive plays to counter them. And then would make adjustments off of those plays. What do we does USC's offense do in the first two series? Nothing. No scores. Nothing close to the red zone. And why is that? Because the o-coordinator has no idea what he is doing.

Lame Kiffin or whoever the o-coordinator is sucks.

DOES ANYONE THINK THAT CARROLL SHIELDS LAME FROM CRITICISM BY ADDING SARK AS A CO-COORDINATOR AND NEVER CRITICIZING THE OFFENSE (IE COMPARING LEINHART'S FIRST YEAR STATS TO BOOTY'S. THE DIFFERENCE IS THERE WAS MUCH MORE CREATIVE PLAYCALLING WITH NORM CHOW THAN LAME KIFFIN.

Robert said:

I both was at the game yesterday, re-watched it on Tivo today and thought about the loss. My conclusion: we must give Sanchez an oppty; Booty stumbles, gets passes tipped, gets "Happy Feet" when pressured and frequently overthrows the long, deep ball. I don't see any display of strong leadership in our tough game situations. Let's give Mark a shot!!

dbmitch said:

The problem with the average sports fan is there has to be someone to blame. If the average sports fan has to go to the office on Monday morning to feel the heat of having lost a game he so arrogantly touted was "in the bag" the week before, some has to pay.

I for one have never been one to scream for someone's head. Especially in college athletics. It was obvious that the OL was getting beat yesterday time and again. Sometimes, when you realize that your original game plan is not going to work, you have to make adjustments. But sometimes, even those adjustments are futile because of execution.

One play in particular probably summed up our inexperience on offense. After a long gain on a Booty to Jerred pass, the Trojans tried another play to Gable. It fell incomplete as Gable stopped, and tried to leap to catch the pass. If he had just kept running instead of stopping, the pass would have hit him in stride and gone for 6. We ran that play many times to Bush last season. Gable hasn't run that play all season. We score a TD there and this is a very different game.

So before everyone screams for heads (and the idiot that stated the play calling has been poor for the last 3 years is including Chow in the poor play calling), keep in mind that 12 games does not make a veteran squad. With the bowl game, then spring practice, the team and the staff will have a much better idea of what this team can do next season. We will again be in the BCS hunt.

Now shut up, go to work and take your licks, and look forward to the Rose Bowl for a very good football team. Not great, yet, but still very good.

I feel bad for our defense and have for the past several games. I always felt our offense would struggle this year with its inexperience at quarterback and lack of the explosive, productive running game we've been so blessed to witness the past several years. It allowed receivers like DJ and SS to sit back and learn and gain the necessary experience to make some of the amazing plays we saw this year.

Our defense struggled against Texas and it was definitely gut check time this year and for past four games, they have gelled and responded admirably - hitting harder than last year and swarming to the football. I thought they played well yesterday and kept the Trojans in the game the entire time.

Many of the comments here regarding the offense have been echo-ed time and time again all year - Booty's lack of proper foot work which causes him to overthrow receivers, an undisciplined offensive line leading to inordinant amount of penalites, an inexperienced and tentative backfield that can quite find holes to hit even though they are a mile wide.

All are "fix-able" with proper coaching and more experience. It's difficult to say whether a change in coordinators or quarterbacks will make a difference. There is no doubt that the play calling has been uninspiring and "predictable" even to us Monday morning quarterbacks. However, most teams in the NCAA can only dream of our talent and success the past five years.

I would like one person to state plainly that they believed USC would be in the position to go to a national championship again this year... If anything, things have happened pretty much how most predicted, though losing to UCLA has never been more painful. It could be worse, USC barely beat Arizona.

With the way USC played yesterday and the inconsistencies experienced on offense all season, personally, I'm glad USC is not off to Glendale to play OSU - we were simply not ready.

Shine said:

The problem is having to listen to UCLA fans all year. Despite their constant complaints that Trojans are arrogant are spoiled (which were are, at times), there worse winners than UCLA. There are the good natured Bruins fans that you can have fun with, and most of them don't care that much about UCLA sports because most UCLA students don't care, until they play USC. Then there is the freak show that is Bruins Nation. It's hard to look at that site and not want to smack the first person you see wearing Bruins gear.

I never rubbed it into my neighbor's faces when we won seven in a row. Yesterday my neighbor went off on me like an Iraqi insurgent. It was unhinged and very distrubing.

And he never even went to UCLA.

After that frightening display, I shall now root for every Bruin team to lose every game ever played form now till the end of days, as well as filing a formal, written complaint with the HOA (he's a renter, BTW, and I'm on the HOA. Dumb dumb dumb).

Sorry, Guys, and Scott in particular. I just can't get into all the bashing. I was at the game, surrounded by bRuin fans, so I know first hand what it felt like to lose. Still, I prefer to take the loss and swallow my pride than be embarrassed by a last-minute TD pass and run like the ND - bRuins game when I know and they know that they kicked our ass. Do you know what it means to be #2 aspiring for a shot at #1? Do you really? It means you should be able to take the ball and jam it down your opponents throat on a third or fourth and one. If we can't do that, then I don't want us to be #2. I don't want to be #2 because Norm Chow called some flea-flicking miracle TD pass out of his butt. No, Kiffin had every right to expect our line to overpower theirs on a third and one. To expect CW or CJ to WILL themselves past the down marker. To expect our oline not to be intimidated by their dline and jump the count. But they didn't. The line buckled. CW and CJ both failed to break tackles. Our oline jumped time and time again. Why?

Because they played three heavily emotional games in a row. Probably played over their heads and to expect them to do it a fourth week was way too much to ask. They were drained. The bRuins, on the other hand, had nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain plus an extra week to prepare and get themselves up for the game. They did it, so the more power to them. But I have nothing but respect for Pete Carroll and his staff and that includes Lane Kiffin. Whatever they decide, I'm behind them all the way.

Oh, and one more thing. Sometimes, for whatever reason, a team has difficulty playing in a certain place. Three poor games in a row at the Rose Bowl. Maybe it has to do with the way the stars have been aligned over these years. That may sound crazy, but it's no crazier than saying we're #1 because your OC called a trick play and pulled out the game when the other team has physically manhandled you.

Raymond said:

The game ended for me late with a little under five minutes in the third quarter when on an important third down play John David rolled out of pressure and did something that was reminiscent of Jim Everett in his glory days-he sacked himself. I said it after the Washington State game and I'm reiterating it now. It time to turn the reigns of this offense to a quarterback who has far more upside then Booty. That quarterback is Mark Sanchez. Hopefully Carroll will understand this because he doesn't owe Booty anything else at this point.

Does everyone want the TRUTH? Here it is: SC fans are dogging JD Booty and humping Mark Sanchez's leg because Sanchez is a SoCal native and Booty is from Nowheretown, Louisiana. Luckily for us, Coach Carroll doesn't play politics and puts in the best athletes; his jobs depends on it. Quit whining, enjoy the ride with your "failure" of a QB who also happens to be 1st time ALL-PAC 10 and will finish top 10 in Heisman voting (according to Heismanpundit.com). SC fans have been spoiled. Be grateful for what you have, because you could have Mark Sanchez in at QB. And trust me, YOU DON'T WANT THAT.

I for one will agree with you. Hopefully none of our recruits read our message boards and see what whiners most of our fans are.
