Why Not Wear Cardinal?
USC coach Pete Carroll said Thursday he intends to ask UCLA to wear its blue jerseys at next year's crosstown rivalry at the Coliseum.
So why doesn't he just wear the Cardinal jerseys tomorrow at the Rose Bowl?
``It's kind of a bold move to (ask for) that to somebody and I don't want to be a part of that,'' Carroll said. ``A lot of our fans remember it's an old tradition that was special. I don't see us doing it at the Rose Bowl. That's not part of the tradition, that's why that doesn't fit.''
Apparently Carroll forgets the Trojans wore cardinal at the 1982 USC-UCLA game, which happened to be in the Rose Bowl.
But by waiting until next year, he puts UCLA coach Karl Dorrell in a lose-lose situation. It means Dorrell did not initiate the invitation and he can't do anything but accept the offer or appear ungracious.

Aren't you forgetting the little old men locked away in some office that dictate the rules, aka, the NCAA.
I believe if the Trojans came out in their cardnial jerseys the team would be handed a fifteen yard penalty even before kickoff and the university would be handed a huge fine. If it were not for these rules I would think wearing your home jersey at a road game would have been done long ago. It's a dumb rule but one that the colleges and universities abide too.
Whaaaaat????
Why would Carroll know who wore what in 1982, and why would he care?
PC is right, it would be a bit presumptuous to ask to wear your home uniforms in a visitor's stadium, but he is showing true class by trying to bring back an old tradition and extending the offer to UCLA for next year's beatdown.
Let us all just hope and pray that PC is back again next year to make that offer.
Wow, Scott, I think you are really stretching it to make this one a controversy. How about some real news, like how Moody can possibly be running at full speed 3 weeks after tearing ankle ligaments, or what the energy of the team was like in practice this week.
Great tradition. Ripping on Pete is stupid. Nobody cares.
I for one, would like to see UCLA become a decent team again. It is boring to watch them lost by 50.
I would also like to see traditions being carried out in a town where tradition trashed left and right. There are so many transplants taking over LA, there are few old school traditions left.
So hats off to Pete for his class. He so gets it. You don't wolfie.
Scott -
I don't think it's as sinister as you're making it out to be. The rules say that the home team gets to wear colored jerseys, the visitors don't. The Trojans haven't been invited to wear cardinal. To run out in cardinal on the other guy's field just for the shock value is a bit classless. Imagine Notre Dame running out in green jerseys at the Coliseum.
What is your problem?
You should be posting on Brian Dohn's blog!
How come he dosn't have a problem posting positive comments about his team??
Whatever.
My God you are a classless idiot.
Pete is talking about the tradition when USC and UCLA actually shared a stadium. It happened one time at the Rose Bowl. That is not a tradition.
Your editorializing makes you look ridiculous.
Seems like something Jose Mourinho would do.
Dorrell did ask before the game last year. Apparently the NCAA wants that request before the season starts.
In the 2006 Civil War, OSU wore home black, and UO wore home highlighter yellow. Neither team had a penalty and I don't think anyone even asked permission.
How is this allowed and home cardinal against home baby blue isn't?
Tonycal is right, SC would get an automatic 15 yard penalty to start the first half, if they wore them after halftime, they'd get another 15 yarder. Then school gets fined...
NCAA changed the rules in the mid 1980's, visiting team wears white...
