An Explanation
Several readers emailed about the initial Mario Danelo item. Several sources called last night after news of the tragedy broke, including two within the USC football program and another person at the scene, and said Danelo's death was an apparent suicide. It was not intended to upset the family and our prayers our with them.
We have taken the item down because the cause of death is still undetermined.

insensitive. now please take down this comment.
At least in David Letterman's Top Ten Signs You're Watching Too Much College Football.
Reason No. 1. ``In bed, your wife says, "Get a Trojan" -- you come back with USC Kicker Mario Danelo.''
Unless you are kicking extra points in the Rose Bowl, of course.
RIP Mario.
Seems fair. Thank you for the explanation.
Thank you for the correction.
Now please remove the stupid joke about Mario in your USC No. 1 posting.
Can't believe you are ignoring that.
Hmmm, seems kind of strange. It appears you can say anything you want and then say that there are these "sources" that give you this info. I can't see anyone within the SC organization saying that it is an apparent suicide when they don't know anything. I guess the claim of these mysterious "sources" allow you to say anything you want.
Everyone here is going crazy wanting Scott Wolf's head, and to be honest, I don't get it.
What he did is what anyone that is a beat reporter for USC would have done...that's what reporters/the media does, they report things without the facts fully being known...and they do it more often than you think.
I'm not saying this excuses anything, but don't sit here acting like its some atrocious act when it happens all the time and most of you don't give a crap about it. Just when it’s not life or death, you don’t find out or care as much, but you should.
RIP - M. Danelo
One down, one to go. . . Now, seriously, Scott. Can you PLEASE take that freaking joke down already?
I have never seen something in such poor taste in my entire life.
There is no humor in this tragedy. It's pathetic that the readers need to remind you where your humanity should be at this difficult time.
Pete Arbogast said the following ans I have to agree.
"Anyone who conjectures about such things without VERY strong evidence of such practices the worst kind of humanistic traits imaginable. A real reporter who goes forward with a story that conjectures this, during a time of tragedy is at best irresponsible and at worst a malicious coward.
Even if it pans out and Mario for some reason killed himself by jumping off of a cliff in the dead of night, morality and practicality suggest you might wait a few days or even weeks before suggesting it without real solid information, which is unlikely to ever surface."
