Class Size

If you count Donovan Warren, USC has about 13 commitments right now. There's only about five players left the Trojans are recruiting, which means this could be a smaller-than-expected class, considering the number of scholarships made available in the past month through academics and transfers.

I hear McKnight is almost a done deal that he is coming...and Marvin Austin is close to committing. But, it sounds like the other 4 are not going to come here...does that make our class 15?

How many scholarships are available this year? Last year we dropped a few scholarships on a few guys that no one knew we were recruiting. Are there any recruits like that this year?

I wonder if any of this Reggie Bush Talk and the possiblilty of possible sanctions is scaring away some recruits

I don't think that there will be a fall off in recruiting because of "potential sanctions"...mostly because it is going to be very difficult for anyone to prove that SC knew about the violations.

A bigger concern for me is...will Pete leave with the potential NCAA heat coming down on the school? Did anyone else here Jason Cole (the guy who broke the Reggie Bush story for Yahoo! Sports) on Roggin and Simers Squared last week? He hinted that is why Pete interviewed for the Miami job. He also hinted that the only possible consequence could be a money consequence to the school.

Lastly, has anyone heard why Pete has allowed agents (Michael Ornstein) to be so close to the program? Especially our prized atheletes???

In another week, it'll all shake out. This is USC. It's not becoming of all of you to sweat these little details. There will always be investigations. Coaches will always get offers. Enjoy the Pete era while it lasts, and until the Bush thing reaches some kind substantive crossroads, don't worry about it. If they take away the 2005 national title, SC will just have to win one in the 2008 Sugar to make up for it. Sound off like you've got a pair Trojan fans...

Eloi - I guess that thinking that cheating is a "little detail" is exactly what is emobdied by the comment "This is SC."

Tim:
According to Rivals.com USC had 14 committments NOT counting Green who is believed to defect to PSU. The 2007 scholarships number is 30 according to:
http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=15&p=9&c=16&yr=2006
Add Spanos and Danelo. Go from there.

Correction Green counts. How much longer? Uhm...

El Capitan,

I think the link you posted just shows eligibility, not players on scholarship, as in 30 eligible players scheduled to graduate in '07 (minus Adewale, Jarret, Schweiger, Danelo, etc). Some of the players listed are walk-on's. NCAA only allows 85 scholies total at any given time. I'm not sure exactly how many scholies are available for incoming players, but it's probably close to 20.

dosnt anyone remember when USC got into some NCAA Trouble during John Robinsons first stint with Troy? in my opinnion, that was the start of 15+ years of mediocrity. how many times did we lose to ND in that span dont be so arrogant to think that could not happen again,

First of all, to the irritating "reel bruin" you show us what "real bruin" means by bothering people on the board of a Real team, USC. Maybe you should try to figure out what happened vs. FSU instead of bugging us. USC didn't "cheat". It's not like we used 13 players or were throwing illegal forward passes or something. IF Reggie Bush was given some money I doubt that seriously affected the outcome of a football game. How could it?

And sorry I don't have the time to list all the problems at UCLA, but I am reading one article now. It begins with: "An assault charge against another former UCLA football player, running back..."

Second, superprep, rivals.com and everything else I have read has McKnight going to LSU and Austin going to FSU. Neither of them want to deal with the distance involved although they love USC. Same for all the rest of those players..they are all going someplace else. The only lock I see we have is Donovan Warren. Although B.Green going to PSU is correct. We are offering some other people now like Christian Tupou and Trey Henderson, who are visiting USC this week.

There are always rumours about Pete Carroll and USC football. There was alot of USC bashing going on back when H.Dennis was charged with sexual assault and E.Wright was busted with all those ectasy pills in his dorm room and people were talking about sanctions. But the only thing is, USC saying it "had no idea this was going on" is nice and makes them look good but they would still get sanctions. That's not going to get them off the hook. A coach and a football program are supposed to have control of their players. It just seems to me that this is going to go on for so long, years and years, that the NCAA probably won't even bother to do much in 2009 anyway.

Pete Carroll was not going to leave because of sanctions coming. He likes the NFL. He was offered the USC job after Robinson quit in 1998, and turned it down to go to the Jets. He saw what he wanted in the dolphins, total control. He gets angry when people say he is not a "good NFL coach" and feels the reason he didn't have success in the NFL was because he didn't have enough control. Wayne Huzienga offered him everything from who the team drafts to who is the ball boy. But he wanted to stay at USC.

Good post I can't argue with you even if I try! Forget reelhead he doesn't have anything better to do.
Later!

Couple things...

Chad Jones has dropped USC from his list. He is not coming.

The best bets I think PC has on Feb 7th are Warren, Thompson and McKnight (Joe McKnight will cause shockwaves throughout Tiger land - they are confident he is all LSU). I have a strange feeling that USC will against all current thinking also sign Austin. He knows how special the USC defense could be in 2008 with him, Gallippo, Griffen, Warren, Mays and Jones at it's core. Crazy just thinking about it.

The real reason the NCAA is having such a difficult time proving anything is that they can't subpoena anyone - they're not a federal institution just a college organization. In all the Yahoo articles the sources of negative info about Reggie come solely from the offended parties (decidedly one sided and clearly biased) and Reggie has no reason to talk since he is already in the NFL. Their only hope is that some records become public through the federal investigation (which was initiated only because of Reggie Bush's extortion charge btw) but that is even slim because anything illegal that the "agents" admit to will result in jail time for them...so they're not likely to admit to anything or provide any evidence.

Finally this is not an easy case like some would have you believe. This is not equivalent to the Rhett Bomar case where he was caught taking money from boosters - people affiliated with OU and interested in Bomar's career at OU. The reggie case involves agents - people interested only in Reggie's career after USC and not at all associated with USC.

Finally. There's not much a university can do about agents hanging around since they are not affiliated with the university unlike boosters. They can't ban them from campus. They can ban them from practices and PC has but even then they can just stand outside Heritage and talk to the athletes that way. PC can and has warned the athletes not to speak to shady characters but is someone wants to talk they will - PC can't police the activities of all 85 athletes every minute of every day.

Good stuff Tyler...

Let's hope your right about Austin. Everson is telling him that exact thing--think of the defense we could have!!

What's the deal on Warren? He was supposed to announce his decision NOT too long ago. Does anybody know?
Thnx

El the last I heard was he was down to USC and fUCLA and but is pretty much going for USC...I don't know what he is waiting for either...

he went to michigan.........what happened????

Are there any predictions that you don't screw up Wolfie? My god you must be the worst beat reporter in college football. Can't wait to see Warren, Spiller, and Desean Jackson suit up in the C&G next year.
Sigh...

Wow,

The Warren decision to commit to Michigan was a shocker. But thankfully not the end of the world. Not only did USC not need to take a CB in this class but it is now likely that USC will still get Ronald Johnson (the #8 ranked Rivals player - Warren was #25) instead of DW in this class. Not a bad trade up.

A Michigan kid coming to LA and an LA kid going to Michigan? Goes to show you that no one, not even the pundits know what they are talking about.

If Warren (a so called silent commit) can go to Michigan at the last second. Why can't USC pull Marvin Austin out of Florida? That would make up for both Wilson and Warren in my book. Come on down Marvin!!

Next time I'm in Vegas, remind me that betting against Wolf's predictions is a sure bet.

Tyler:
I hope your shark instincts are right. I can't believe I agree with the ACLU reelhead! Don't worry I am watching my step(s)!
