More Intrigue
USC announced that Pete Carroll will not attend today's team meeting and will return to campus tomorrow. Officially, the meeting covers academics and winter conditioning, which technically means his presence is not required. However, Carroll always attended those meetings in the past.
Maybe he's tired after interviewing for the Dolphins job with Wayne Huizenga on Sunday. USC did not have any comment today on the Dolphins interview.

Wolfie...
In one of your posts below you already said he is not planning on coming back from vacation until Jan 9. So obviously, he had planned to miss this meeting before all of this "intrigue" started...The guy is on vacation give him a break.
Nice try though :o))

Plus, WH and the Dolphins are nowhere near done with the hiring process, they still have alot of people left to interview and they really want Bill Cowher.
Carroll would be nowhere near the stage of blowing off meetings and packing up his desk at this point.....:)

I wonder what the Dolphins offered PC...and shouldn't USC counter with restructuring his contract?

Just stoking the fire...
But hey, you can't blame a guy for listening to offers. Each and every one of us would do the same thing if it meant more $$. Sometimes you just need to know what's out there to appreciate what you have.

Doesn't Mike G re-negioate PC's contract every year after his talks with NFL, just to keep him? Isn't this the game PC plays? He's worth every penny! Cough it up, Mike.

Here's off the top of my head:
1. WH wants Bill Cowher. It's in every Miami newspaper. Somewhere along the line, he is going to get Cowher. So, whoever takes the job before him is a lame duck. Unless he wins the super bowl and puts 4 guys in the pro bowl. PC is too smart to get into that.
2. The Dolphins are a bad team, in a tough division with the NE Patriots and the Jets. They also have all the Ricky Williams baggage and a friggin' Detroit Lions reject as their QB. I think PC is too smart to get into that, too.
3. WH just got burned by 1 college coach, he doesn't really want another.
4. PC has never said he has any interest in leaving USC. I think everyone in the college football world would fall over backward if he left USC.
5.PC was in the NFL already and knows his style of coaching doesn't work there. When he was in NE and would jump up and down after a TD and want to run ST drills with the players they thought he was crazy. Why would he go back? PC is god almighty in college football but Pro is completely different. People in Boston think he is retarded.
IF PC was really interested in the job, why all this James Bond 007 crap? "We will rendezvous in Costa Rica for the talks..." They would just sit down in the US somewhere and work it out.
here's what I think happened: WH heard PC was in Costa Rica and realized he had a chance to talk to him while he was away from USC. So he jetted on down there, offered the job to PC, PC said no thanks, and WH went home.

Everybody knows college football is bigger than the NFL. As Jimmie Johnson told his descendants, you only go to the NFL for $$ or vanity. Pete gets plenty of both at SC. There's just no creativity in the pro game any more. Going for it on 4th and short? Not in the No Fun League. Just become the next Bear Bryant, Pete. Exploit that natural recruiting advantage you've spent all these years establshing, and enjoy life.

Get out of here. USC has just completed a 11 win season and there is speculation that Carroll is getting offers to coach in the NFL? Never heard that one before. However, has an NFL owner (a good NFL owner) ever flown to Costa Rica, on his private jet, to interrupt Carroll’s vacation and discuss a head coaching position?
Preseason No. 1 Ranking, another potential No. 1 recruiting class, only losing 7 players on the three deep, the opportunity to coach a team loaded with potentially 4 straight No. 1 recruiting classes, and remaining the King of Souther California...kind of hard to walk away from that...I hope!

The best reason for PC to stick around is next season. Check out:

All those #1 recruiting classes and ONLY 1 national championship!! Pete wants to get out before that championship is lost thanks to Reggie Bush (it is no wonder he was stiffed for the Rose Bowl) and he becomes the next Larry Coker or the new coach at Tulane!!

I heard something like Larry R said too....
Either way, PC has alot of damage control to do.
If he is going to the Dolphins, and this whole things has blown up in his face, he is going to have to explain to USC why he is trying to sneak out the back door, he will lose most of his recruiting class for next year, and generally look like a jerk for running out on USC.
If he isn't going to the Dolphins, then he has to explain why he is in Costa Rica talking to WH.
I bet that's why he has not released a statement yet.

Bill, it's two national championship and a runner-up, not one. The top recruiting classes didn't happen until PC got to SC. Reggie Bush getting hammered is a bruin wet dream that won't happen. He was in Costa Rica on vacation. It happens. He didn't make a big deal out of the Hiuzinga visit because Mario Danello had just died. He has more class and sense than to make the weekend about himself.

I get so sick of this "bush busted gonna cost USC the national championship!!"
THe issue is long over and closed. Neither party is talking and the NCAA cannot force anyone to talk about anything that happened and whatever it was it was settled a long time ago I am sure, no matter what the Notre Dame network....Yahoo.com tries to tell us.
Get a life
