My favorite USC linebacker, Matt Grootegoed, is set to play for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League next season.

I'm glad to hear that, good for him. Grootegoed was a solid ball player at SC, perfect example of a little guy that could play LB.

I miss Groots. That is one bad thing about these days of 5 star only recruits - SC doesn't offer guys like Groots any more. Guys who are not future top NFL prospects but who are fearless ballers who are always prepared and never take plays off. He was a leader by example who made us alums proud.

Wasn't Groots highly rated coming out of Mater Dei? For whatever it's worth, I remember he was the LA Times Glenn Davis Award winner that year (Southland's top player), and I thought he'd be a badass (whew, was he!). I don't know how many stars he rated, but wouldn't the Glenn Davis winner be automatically 5 (or 4) stars?
Best wishes to Grootegoed. Why isn't he in The League, though? He's about the same size as Zach Thomas and the retired Dat Nguyen, and just as fearless.

About Inside USC
Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC
graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for
the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet
message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this
moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in
antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
