Very interesting Scott. Say it ain't so Pete...not again! I am going to take a page from JDT or JDK or whatever that nuisance bRuin's name is and do a little cut and paste job from my previous post:
"Steve Sarkissian turns down a head coaching position in the NFL to stay as an assistant at USC (positioning himself as a possible successor to Carroll), then Peter Carroll inks the No.2 recruiting class in the country for USC, and then less than a week after USC secures another stellar recruiting class, the San Diego Chargers (14-3) suddenly fire Coach Marty Schottenheimer after a great season."
Conspiracy or coincidence?

I hate to say it, but this was the first thing I thought of when I saw the report on ESPN ..."WOW I wonder if Pete said he would take the job after signing day, and had worked a deal so SS would be the new HC" --- I don't want to think this way I just do.....Please let me be like Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory----- I hope im just paranoid, and no one's out to get me

The only way this would happen is if Pete gave up his demand for complete autonomy. Look what happened between Shotty and A. J. And look who Spanos eventually backed. As for this jive about Pete signing up a month ago, you've been watching too much TV. Cool it with the drama and think things through. Cam and Wade just became NFL head coaches!! Duh! Why wouldn't Spanos have fired Marty last month and elevated one of them? Because he had Pete Carroll in the bag? Very unlikely. Cam and Wade will both make great NFL coaches. If Pete goes, it will be because he worked things out with A. J., but he won't have the autonomy or be able to joke around with the "guys," like he has at USC.

The San Diego Chargers have wasted little time in looking for a replacement for Marty Schottenheimer.
Several league sources have told FOXSports.com that the Chargers have requested permission to interview Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan and Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs, among others.
Rivera, who also was slated to fly out to San Diego to interview within the next 48 hours.
In addition, while USC head coach Pete Carroll's name has been hot, team sources contend he is not a viable option at this point.
San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinater Norv Turner could also be a candidate, as well as Seattle asstistant head Jim Mora.
The Chargers fired Schottenheimer after 14-2 season in 2006, citing a "dysfunctional situation" between the coach and general manager A.J. Smith. Schottenheimer has a career record of 200-126-1 with Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego.

``I've got my antennas up,'' he said.
Who is he? Pete Caroll? Your source (well known member of the football program)?
Pete saying it = I'm interested, I'll hear them out.
Member of football program = I'll be on the look out to see if I hear anything.
A little more specificity would go a long way Scott.

The situation in San Diego seems far from ideal for an elite candidate like PC. The GM is firmly entrenched. The staff has been raided. The combine and draft are rapidly approaching. The former head coach was fired after a 14-2 regular season. The only upside is that the on-field talent is first class.
The NFL is a grind. Including the pre-season, the Colts had to play 24 games to win the Super Bowl. That is almost twice the number of games USC played during its 06-07 Rose Bowl Championship season.
The Chargers are better off rolling the dice on a young, hungry coach from the NFL, not college, ranks in hope of finding the next Sean Payton. However, should they want to hire Charlie Weiss, I'm sure the meeting can be arranged . . .

I'd be concerned with both Marty and AJ were fired. No way Pete would go into that situation as it is right now. It's dramatically different than what Miami was offering.

Remember this Trojan fans, we are talking about San Juan Tijuana Diego, and you are also talking about some of the most cheapest owners in the NFL (the Spanos family always looks for the $5 coupons for every “all you can eat buffets they can find”). There is no way that they will pay Marty his $4 million left on his contract, and then have to cough up another $6 million to Coach PC. Besides, LA has the class in SoCal, not San Juan Tijuana Diego.

Bye Bye Pete! Bye Bye Love! Say hello to loneliness! Aloha until we meet again! With probation on the horizon, with the NCAA/media scrutinizing every little thing (town car or limo? speakerphone or no speakerphone?), with the #1 recruiting class in the bag, with Sarkesian waiting in the wings, with a SuperBowl ready team on the field, in sunny So Cal to boot, with nothing to prove on this level, and aching to try it on the next level... How could Pete say No?

Scott,
You've obviously got a credibility problem when it comes to journalistic integrity. Like it or not, the strong opinion exists that you're basically a glorified tabloid columnist. I wonder why in a situation like this, where it's so obvious that Pete could never work with AJ Smith, you wouldn't for once choose credibility over sensationalism. This is such an easy call, it just seems incredibly short-sighted to attach yourself to these obviously impossible rumors. Why not just state the obvious that Pete couldn't work in SD? Seems silly to me, but it's your career.
