Here's Where The Last Scholarship Goes
USC made a splash on signing day but even bigger news could be looming for the Trojans as Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain will visit in the next two weeks with the hope of transferring in the fall.
Mustain, who started eight games for the Razorbacks, would be more than just a finishing touch on recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 by ESPN. Although he said he would leave Arkansas last month, he only recently contacted USC despite his teammate, Damian Williams, transferring here in January.
Coincidentally, USC saved a scholarship just in case Mustain decides to transfer.

where does that leave Corp and Sanchez? PC seems to be getting a little crazy with all these RB's and QB's. I know last year's offense wasn't the greatest, but he's stockpiling 2 much

WHY so many posts? There isn't any excuse for that mess. One post is all you need to make your point.

Regarding Mustain I don't understand it, either. Sanchez is going to start after JDB leaves. After that is Aaron Corp. Regardless of where Mustain goes he has to sit for a whole year...

Just4SC,
If you don't see your post after it said it posted do not repost it. Just go back to the front page and refresh. It should show up then.
Oh and Mustain being here won't affect anyone. The reason PC wants Mustain here is so that he can get the competition he needs at the Qb position next year. Booty got better because he had to compete against both Sanchez and Matt Leinart last year. Sanchez will not get complacent if he knows that Mustain and Corp are breathing down his neck. (If Corp was his only real competition though he could probably sleepwalk through training camp next year and clearly be the leader for the starting spot).
Mustain would not be eligible to play this year and he would be one of 3 QBs next year. Corp will likely redshirt this year and be a redshirt freshman next year.
A team like USC really should have at least a quality experienced QB as backup to the starter and a third QB for depth. Corp would not have that experience next year and without Mustain USC would have only 2 QB's with knowledge of the USC system going into the 2008 season.

Actually now that I re-read my post I'm not sure USC even has the depth in 2007 to be able to redshirt Corp. Corp may have to remain on the active roster to ensure USC has 3 Qbs ready to play in case of injury...There's a reason PC wanted Samson Szakacsy.

Would you tell Joe Montana to stay home? Do you want him to go to UCLA?

anyone know if mcdonald is coming back for '07? if not, then corp would not be redshirted IMO....we will have JDB, sanchez and corp as our 3 QBs.

Tyler:
Here is the QB depth chart
JDB>MS>MM and Garrett Green. That is four QB's. There isn't any need to activate Aaron Corp. With that many QB's WHY Mustain? IMHO NOT Mustain:
1. QB depth
2. Suspect trailer hook?
3. Team chemistry?
Unless anybody assumes that MS will turn PRO after one Year which is senseless, period. The only other argument that I can give the benefit of the doubt is to state that Mustain is equally competitive to Aaron Corp.
Thanks

El Cap,
I disagree with your depth chart analysis for a couple reasons...
1. Garrett Green is currently listed as S/QB and practiced most of the time at the safety position in 2006 - he is not even close to being ready at QB and PC likes him more as an athlete.
2. You can't use 2007's depth chart as the reason for not wanting Mustain because Mustain wouldn't play next year anyways - he is a transfer and would have to sit out a year. You have to look at the depth chart for 2008.
3. In 2008 the depth chart of experienced pure QBs would be Sanchez and Corp. That's it. Corp wont be ready to challenge Sanchez (Sanchez will have 3 years experience against Corp's 1) and PC wants to have someone in house that can push Sanchez and competein spring ball and into the year. Much like Booty/Cassell did for Matt and Sanchez does for Booty.
PC likes to have a 1A option as a backup so that there is little to no drop off if someone gets hurt. Corp could be great QB in 2-3 seasons but in 2008 he would not be 1A to Mark Sanchez.
PC is just looking for that competition to be fierce every year. That is where Mustain comes in. He would keep Sanchez focused in 2008. Do you think Sanchez maintains the same focus if Corp is his only real competition?

Actually, Mustain would have to sit for a year, so next year's depth would be Booty, Sanchez and McDonald, with Green as a safety net.
Year after that, both Booty and McDonald are gone and you have Sanchez as a junior starter with Mustain and Corp backing up (with 3-4 years of eligibility, assuming Corp redshirts).
Sounds like a solid move if it can be done.

You mean Mustain is LDS? Well, Pete Carroll discouraged players in the past from going on their mission because he wouldn't hold their scholarships. Can anyone confirm this?

As far as I know, Mitch Mustain is not a Mormon nor going on any religious mission.

MM is a lot of hype. His passing is erractic. This kid couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. This is a wasted scholarship. He plays in 8 games as a freshman. He can only play that HS offense (swing passes to the backs and RB and TE's underneath). His hyped high school coach, the OC, leaves The Ark and MM and his HS team mates all start bailing. At the Ark he has a real opportunity to start next year. What college player would walk away from "being able to start" in a major conference like the SEC? Think about it. Third and five is running down with McFadden.

It sounds like there has been a lot of conflict between the Malzahn camp and the Nutt camp at Arkansas. The fact that Mustain didn't commit there until Nutt hired his high school coach as OC could very likely mean that Mustain went there to play for Malzahn and not Houston Nutt. Malzahn felt that he had very little control over the play calling and that Nutt was bottling up the spread offense in favor of the running game. Mustain might very well feel the same way and might be leaving for that reason; in fact, I'd bet on it.

Great posts.
I have to admit I have heard some criticism of MM but he is just a freshman.
I also heard he said "They (arkansas) would have a better chance of getting me if they fired that coach (Nutt)"
So he has quite an ego..also.
Anyway who cares why wouldn't you want him?

To avoid multiple posts:
1. Check if you have Explorer Internet 7 updated.
2. If your post does NOT show, close that program and re-enter the dailynews.com site. The chances are that your post will show then. Stay away from refreshing b/c that is what causing the multiple posts to begin with.
With ALL due respect Sanchez was cleared-end of the story-FINITO...
