Hold Your Breath
It looks like it could be awhile before Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain officially announces where he will transfer, according to sources. There's really no rush for Mustain, since he is enrolled at Arkansas for the semester. USC remains the frontrunner.

Scott, I said the exact same thing on your blog two days ago:
"There isn't really a rush for Mustain to announce as he won't even enroll at USC until May. He will still be an enrolled Arkansas student this semester, so what's the rush for him to officially announce? PC has held a scholarship just for him, so it's not as if he has to commit before someone else will take his scholarship."
Thanks for repeating what I already wrote!
Regardless, Mustain will start at quarterback for the USC Trojans in 2008!
I will be happy and proud to have Mustain in the Cardinal & Gold.
I simply cannot foresee a scenario that he will not start once Booty is gone. Just can't see it.
Fight On, Mitch!
Mitch Mustain will transfer to USC and will enroll as early as summer school in May, you can count on it. You can also count on the fact that he will be the starting quarterback for the 2008 season.
There are reasons why Mustain will be transferring to USC and it will become evident soon.
Thanks great news. There are nothing but positives about Mustain's enrollment at SC. I expect great things from Mustain and am sure he'll lead the Trojans to the promised land. By all accounts, Mitch is a fine young man and I'm sure he'll represent us well, both on and off the field.
I look forward to seeing Mitch Mustain lead the Trojans as our quarterback of the future.
Mitch Mustain will make one heck of a starting QB for us.
He will be the best and most decorated incoming QB we've ever had. I can't think of anything but positives about the Mustain transfer. He's not going to embarrass us with any off the field incidents. Getting arrested for rape has no place at an institution like USC and is simply disgusting. Mustain is above that and I will welcome him with open arms.
Simply put, Mustain is just what we want as a Trojan.
Mitch! Mitch! Mitch! Mitch!
Can't get enough of the Mustain soap opera! This is really exciting news. As has been mentioned countless times by so many, Mitch went 8-0 as a true freshman quarterback in the SEC, which was the best conference in the country. That's the best record for any true freshman starting quarterback in the history of college football. There is simply no way that anyone can think a Mustain transfer to USC is a bad thing, unless they have their own selfish agenda...
Mitch just has so much potential for greatness, it's awe-inspiring. If you take what he accomplished as an 18 year old true freshman, then the possibilities of what he will do next year as a 20 year old are almost too much to imagine.
This is a player who can go to any school he wants to anywhere in the country, so the possibility that he may be coming to USC speaks volumes. PC and Sarkisian surely know what they are up to here. Such good times are ahead with Mitch Mustain and the Trojans.
I admit that I am one of those jumping on board the Mustain bandwagon with full might and enthusiasm. I want Mustain to start and I expect Mustain to start.
The only thing that Sanchez has going for him is that he is the "other quarterback." Whenever people see something go wrong on the field, they want to see the quarterback changed, which is simply ignorance.
Sanchez's greatest claim to fame at USC (aside from being arrested for sexual assault, of course) is that he is not Booty. So some people think that if you change the quarterback and put in the 2nd string, suddenly all the problems disappear. That's not exactly how it works now, is it.
Sanchez could not even beat out Booty and will not beat him out this year, either. I have never seen anything from him to suggest that he even comes close to Booty. Not in practice, not in scrimmages and not the few times he came off the bench. Booty is in a different league altogether from Sanchez.
Mustain, on the other and, went freaking 8-0 as a true freshman in the toughest football conference in the country. How could anyone criticize perfection? He's a proven winner already at the college level, whereas Sanchez is about to enter his third year on the bench.
Jump on the Mustain bandwagon now or you'll be left behind!
As Scott said,we to hold our breath.Word is Mustain might visit Louisville.
If someone the caliber of Mustain wants to wait before making his official announcement, then we should let him take as much time as he likes. He can't play until next year anyway, so what's the point of making an announcement while he's still an enrolled student at Arkansas?
He will be the most heralded QB we have had enroll at USC since Marinovich and I can't wait. He will blow away the competition and prove to be one of the greatest college QBs in history.
Mustain is truly a phenom and I have no problem in his taking as much time as he likes to make his announcement. Once he's at USC, all bets are off. Sarkisian has already gone on the record by saying that the offense will be changed, with the new system being exactly what Mustain expected at Arkansas, but Nutt denied.
Mitch Mustain is an all-world talent and he has already done more as a true freshman in college than any other QB in history.
A big FIGHT ON to Mitch Mustain!
Mustain is probably just taking his time to come up with how he wants to decorate his LA dorm room. No need for him to ask Dirty Sanchez, who only knows the interiors of jail cells!
Right now, Mustain is coming up with all the different ways he will make Dirty Sanchez his little bitch, which is something Dirty Sanchez is quite accustomed to from his time in jail!
Once Mustain comes, Dirty Sanchez will become Mustain's bitch and will be all done!
Wow, it will be great to have a great qb for a change. I'm tired of these low rated hs qbs coming in (Booty/Sanchez #1). And who can forget the dog days under Carson and Matt! Why wait? Let's erect another statue in the peristye end with Mitch and the Heisman (or 3) now???
Mustain coming to SC cannot be viewed as anything other than a statement regarding the future offensive system at USC. He is a complete player. He can run, throw and from all accounts, has a very good head on his shoulders. He is a religious young man with great values who will not embarrass us with any off the field indiscretions.
Along with Aaron Corp, Mitch Mustain is clearly the kind of young man we should want to have the title of USC student-athlete.
I want Mitch Mustain at USC and cannot imagine a downside to his coming. Kudos to Carroll and Sarkisian for recruiting Mustain to come to USC. Kudos.
I gave Sanchez my heart and all he did was deny me. My attentions are now turned elsewhere.
I love you Mitch Mustain. Come to me.
Again I ask the question are all of you Mustain sunshine pumpers going to go with his Mommy to Mike Garrett’s office to complain about playing time, the direction of the offence or if his teammates are being nice to him if he is not the starter. Until the transfers or for that matter till summer of 08 let’s keep this under control. I for one could care less if this Mama’s boy crybaby transfers here or not to be honest he still has much to prove as far as maturity goes as proven by his Mothers actions and his outspokenness for his present coach Huston Nutt. Still can’t understand why you people are so in love with this pre Madonna.
ESPYSports has converted me. I see the light.
Troll.
LBC_Rob, you said:
"Still can’t understand why you people are so in love with this pre Madonna."
Is this her "Like a Virgin" phase? I was actually more into the post-Madonna phase that included "Vogue" and "Like a Prayer"! But that's just me.
I think having Mustain considering SC is fantastic , but a 10-9 TD to INT ratio and being replaced as a starter by Casey Dick at Ak U doesnt impress me much..........so if he doesnt start at SC, will he bolt like Thomas(UNLV) or Rocky Hinds? He did it to the "hogs" what makes anyone believe he wont do it to the Trojans ?
I think I'll wait for Sanchez to make it or break it at SC, Im not sold on MM yet..........
El Capitan, You should take some notes from trojanq84 about how to formulate and write a constructive opinion criticizing Mustain. You will notice that it leaves out some irrelevant discussion regarding the periodic table, or whether he is bilingual or a chemistry major. I am also pretty sure trojanq84's post is not going to incite some moronic discussion about race that gets 50 responses.
And once I am convinced that YOU are NOT a Usual Suspect member (and by Ususal Suspect member I mean a non-USC graduate like Bill, ReelBruin, or miguelito that continue to post nuisance emails that drag the quality of the threads on Scott’s Blog down with them) I'll let YOU know.
Grammar tip of the day for El Capitan - When u makes the same sound as the y in you, or o makes the same sound as w in won, then "a" is used instead of "an". Therefore, you would say "a" Usual Suspect instead of "an" Usual Suspect (which you continue to do in your posts), but since you were a chemistry major, and not an English major, I can understand how you might not know that.
Now let’s move on to more important things, like USC clinching its 20th win over Stanford last night at the Gallen Center. I thought I was at a Laker Game for a second with Denzel Washington sitting court side and a packed arena on its feet for a good part of the game.
Was last night’s win SC’s 6th or 7th win against a Top 25 team this year? And barring a total melt down, it looks like Floyd is going to have the Trojans dancing in March for the first time in a while!
Fight on!
To quote Barry Lamar Bonds, "It's like Sanford and Sons. The same thing over and over..."
I'd really like to get past the whole "Mustain for President in '08" campaign push, but Wolfe and other posters keep adding their same two cents over and over and over, so here goes.
SAE: "I simply cannot foresee a scenario in which Mustain will not start in '08..." Dude, I get it. You're not clairvoyant. It's alright bro, neither am I. I do however, see several scenarios in which Mustain does not start. (Like Sanchez could be better, Corp could be better, Mustain could get himself in trouble with LA women, etc) And I know, "All indications are that Mustain is a stand-up guy." but all precincts may not have reported as of yet. Mustain might have a few skeletons in the closet himself. I didn't see angel wings poking out of his uni last year.
Rusty Trombone: Quit killing Mark with the Dirty Sanchez bit. It's irritating, offensive, and unoriginal. Just stop it.
To get back to more unifying banter, check out what that ND homer, Beano Cook wrote in an ESPN.COM chat this week:
matt (omaha): USC is coming to Lincoln this upcoming season. It's the hottest ticket in these parts that I can ever remember. Do the Huskers have a shot?
Beano Cook: It is the big test for Bill Callahan. Yes, I think Nebraska has a shot. I think somewhere along the line USC will lose. I said last year that I felt they would lose two games and I feel the same way this year. The schedule is against them.
Is there anyone in professional journalism that is as blatantly biased as Beano is towards the Irish? (Dukie V. maybe) Everytime I see this blowhard he's slurping Notre Dame. Can we all agree that Beano is a schmuck? (At least we should agree on something here. We are all Trojan fans afterall.)
You're right, there is no rush. Even if he enrolls for summer school, he will still have to sit out a year.
For the year that Mustain sits out, he will not only learn the playbook (which will be moot, anyway, for the following season), but will become a part of the system.
I find his entire recruitment somewhat strange, in that he came to campus and was kept away from Sanchez and other players that normally would show a recruit around. Instead, he met with PC and Sark, then his former Arkansas teammate, Williams, showed him around.
PC and Sark are definitely planning something here, and I find Sark's statements that the offense is going to be changed -- to a system that just so happens to benefit Mustain's style of play -- to be VERY telling and interesting.
This all leads me to think that Mustain is being brought in to start in 2008. There are just too many variables that point to that direction. PC and Sark know what they are doing and Mustain was being recruited to transfer to USC even before Szakacsy de-committed.
So the fact that Mustain went 8-0 as a true freshman, with Sark saying that he is going to change the offense, I can only think that the future of the USC quarterback situation is in the hands of Mitch Mustain.
And I am just fine with that.
trojanq84 - I have seen Sanchez play on numerous occasions in practice, huddle, games and, quite frankly, he cannot come within a time zone of Booty. Sanchez is slow, can't run or move well and his judgment is questionable. There was no doubt that Booty was going to start last season and there will be no doubt that he will start next season. None whatsoever. Booty is so much better than Sanchez, it's laughable.
Also, from everything that has come out about Mustain being benched for Casey Dick, it appears to have been political reasons to do with Houston Nutt. Nutt even admitted that in an interview this week and I just read that he may be getting fired for how he allowed the relationship to Mustain to deteriorate so much, to the point that Mustain chose to leave. Let's be honest here, how Mustain have done any better than 8-0?
JJH4USC - just ignore that race-baiting buffoon. He is one of the few non-Trojans who come on this blog to spread their trash simply because they hasve no life and like the attention they get from us Trojans.
Turnstiles - I agree, the secrecy of Mustain's recruitments and Sark's words about the offense are rather telling. But I suppose that only time will tell.
FluorTower - that was funny! I guess I would put myself in the category of post-post-Madonna. To those of you don't know, that's the period since she's been living in London and started speaking with a posh British accent!
Beano Cook is a schmuck - so say we all!!
USC will destroy all comers next season and will be the first team to win a BCS NC and a SuperBowl in the same season. (Rey Maulauga and Keith Rivers are Pro-Bowl bound.)
Take that to the bank. And no I'm not kidding...
Well, let's start with the de-bunking first. Sanchez can run and has shown that ability. In fact, he runs better than Booty and moves better in the pocket.
Couldn't beat out Booty. Well, DUH...All the Booty haters forget that Booty was wanted by everybody in America out of high school and that he was here first; in fact, he was a 3rd year junior starter to Sanchez's 2nd year frosh. Booty is a heckuva qb. Programs across the country would be lined up to have a guy who threw for over 3,000 yards while having his hands tied behind his back for more than half the season and 29 td's to only 9 int's.
Sanchez has had great coaching and is talented and tough.
Mustain only starts over Sanchez if Sanchez transfers out because he gets upset that he can't beat out Booty.
Mustian could be starting in 2010 possibly, if, he can beat out Corp.
Although, I must say that I would love to see Mustain start so that the first time he has a bad game, everybody here can start bashing him and saying how Corp is better.
Major spastication going on here.
I'd love to have Mustain in the fold, he'll be the best backup in all of college football in 08 when he sits behind Sanchez.
Beano Cook is a schmuck - so say we all!!
Yes, that is something that I think everyone (even on this board) can agree on!!!! Well said Tyler.
The sudden flowering of Mitch Mustain Love humorous, though quite creepy. But isn’t that what the Internet is all about, being humorous yet, at times, a little creepy.
Um, USCBUAD92:
"Mitch Mustain is an all-world talent and he has already done more as a true freshman in college than any other QB in history."
I hate to pop your bubble of irrational exuberance, but Chris Leak threw for over 3000 yards as a true freshman. So you might want to back off on your silly comments. Or maybe not.
I wonder if Mustain reads this blog and thinks: "Hmmm, maybe some USC fans ARE as insane as Theresa Prewett ..."
dib1, think you meant to say Booty was a 4th year Junior starter (3 years on the pine). Sanchez will be in the same boat should he start in '08. Gotta think this is the way Pete prefers it with his QB's, although Matt was a 3rd year Soph starter. Need talent, but also lots of time in the system learning the most complicated position on the field. Inexperienced, immature, poor decision-makers turn the ball over. Pete won’t run with those guys. I bet you won't see a true Freshman QB at SC as long as Pete’s around. Let’s see how well that works out this fall for fat-man Weis and the #1 2006 high school QB. I don't see studs named McFadden and Jones in the backfield to bail him out. Can you say 7-5 and CarQuest? May be good enough for ND, but not USC. Fight On!
95% of these posts account for the same song from the same performers:
Rusty Trombone and The Usual Suspects Orchestra with jimmyboy as the lead singer. The newest addition to the background vocals is JJH4USC.
Why would you dignify their garbage?
Thank you
I'm sure I'll be labeled a Mustain 'basher' for this, but I'm not completely sold on him yet. There seems to be too much 'noise' about him to ignore.
First, with a little scrutiny, I think too much is being made of '8-0 as a starter.' Now, I admit that I didn't see him play in any of these games, but did he win any of them with his throwing arm or field leadership? Or was he simply adept at handing the ball off to McFadden/Jones? Also, in the 8th game he started (against South Carolina) he was benched after the first series. He may have started that 8th game, but Casey Dick 'won' it. Do the victories over Vanderbilt (2 points) or Alabama (1 point) impress much?
It's hard to overlook that despite going '8-0 as a starter' he was eventually benched. I can't recall anything like this ever happening before.
The current state of the Arkansas football team can't be ignored either. Depending on who you believe, his transfer was actually welcomed. Surely, the blame does not rest entirely with Mustain, but he must bear some responsibility. Young men make mistakes, but it was nevertheless wrong to make public comments that were disrespectful of the head coach. If he failed to earn the support and respect of his teammates, then that is largely on him too.
Like most SC fans, I welcome what is best for the program. If Mustain decides to transfer, works hard, respects the coaches and his teammates, and plays his guts out, then he should be an asset to the team, starter or not.
This would be a 'high value' problem. Injuries happen and players struggle and get benched.
Only Mustain knows what kind of attitude he will bring to the next program he joins. Hopefully, his 'baggage' will get lost on the way to SC, but we'd be foolish to believe that he'd be arriving without any issues.
Tyler, probably the most informed blogger here...keep it up dude, your stuff is great. I would like to invite Beano Cook to "the captains" table.. A table filled with BS and irrellevance.
goliathtrojan
AlwaysBeatND: by the time Mustain becomes eligible, he will be a third year player, and will already have had more experience as a starter than all the other QBs on the roster COMBINED.
Mustain is hardly immature, and from all I have seen and heard from him, he seems to be extremely mature, and appears to be a deeply religious young man.
Nutt has now started taking responsibility for the situation that resulted in Mustain transferring, which I have been following closely. I have read numerous interviews given by all those involved and it really appears that the issue with Mustain's transfer was due to poor coaching decisions, not anything that was instigated by Mustain or Williams.
dib1: I disagree that Sanchez is particularly fast. He has slow legs and from tape I have seen of Mustain, cannot move even remotely as well as Mustain. It's not even close. Based on Sanchez's arrest for sexual assault, as well as his use of a fake ID at a popular off-campus bar where he could be recognized, I also question his judgment and maturity.
Another issue that has been brought up, but not discussed particularly in-depth - what if PC is not even at USC next year? What if Sarkisian is gone? That will throw everything up in the air, in regards to the system, the hierarchy and the order of succession. Just something to ponder.
Nice post sureshot32!
Beano Cook is just an old, mentally unstable blowhard (kind of like some of the infamous nuisances that continue to annoy 95% of the people on Scott’s Blog), and any Trojan will agree, a schmuck. There is nothing worse than an overly opinionated kook that spews nonsense just because he has a forum to do so. However, the Beano Cook’s of the world are somewhat entertaining because they make it so much more enjoyable when they have to eat crow after they are proven wrong time and time again.
Meanwhile, we saw what Callahan’s over hyped Nebraska team did last year...play not to get blown out instead of playing to win. Albeit, Lincoln will be a very intimidating atmosphere to play in with that see of red and all of those people wearing corn husks on their heads, but with SC’s experienced D, and Booty’s cannon, we will be able to take the crowd out of the game, and chalk up another W against a Top 25 Team on our way to New Orleans!
Fight On!
PS - Good luck to the B-Ball squad today! I can’t wait to go watch them at the Gallen Center this evening and kick Cal’s butt, which will all but secure the Trojans a spot in the Big Dance with win number 21!
Sorry, make that a "sea of red"...in order to circumvent another non-sports related, nuisance post.
JJ..Thank God that you corrected your spelling! You have no idea how appreciative all of us "usual suspects" are;-)
duh
Desmo - Chris Leak went 6-3 as a true freshman starter. Thus, Mustain's 8-0 record is the best ever by a true freshman starter in the history of college football.
Anytime goliathtrojan, glad you appreciate it.
