Just In The Middle?

Servite linebacker Chris Galippo is a middle linebacker but Pete Carroll did not rule out using him at another linebacker spot.
``I don't know yet, I don't want to pigeonhole him anywhere,'' Carroll said. ``He could (play alongside Rey Maualuga).''

Keep Galipo in the middle if he has any discipline what so ever. Move Rey outside so he has less responsibility and can just create havoc.

Don't bet on it. Rey Rey will stay in the middle, unless Chris flat out beats him for the spot.

Talked to a coach recently who said they had no intention of moving Rey and asking him to learn a new position.

Galippo will have his day though, that's for sure....

he said he will "play alongside Rey"

I think he means, in the 3-4 Defense, it would be

Rivers-Galippo-Rey M-Cushing

I hope they get rid of the 3-4...doesn't work too well with the cover 2.
After the Oregon State game, when USC used primarily the 4-3...their defense was nails.
Galippo reminds me of Tatupu...just always seems to find the football...I'd rather see him in the middle and Rey outside as well.

USC stayed in the 3-4 all season...the early problems with the defense had nothing to do with the 3-4 and everything to do with aggression. After the OSU game PC let the guys play and took the reigns off.

If you watch the Michigan game again Cushing got his three sacks rushing from the Elephant position. He was a stand up defensive end for most of that game and USC played the 3-4 for most of that game.

USC didn't play a true 3-4 but a 3-4/4-3 hybrid. Where there were still 4 linemen but one (Cushing) was standing up at the line. The crazy thing about next year is that with the addition of Griffen USC could switch back and forth between the 3-4 and 4-3 in the few seconds befor the snap. Talk about messing with the QBs mind. Griffen and Cushing rushing from the same side? Enough to give any QB fits.

Can you post that alignment? Use the last name first letter G for Griffen, J for Jackson, etc. Another question I have is how are they going to disguise it? If you were the OC how would play against it?
Thnx

As otherWolff states, a 3-4 would be wonderful with Galippo in there, allowing Rey to stay on one side of the field.
With Griffen and Jackson in there, the defensive captain could call which defense was needed based on the opposing play in front of them.

Have to anticipate Rey Rey leaving after this year anyway. Galippo would appear to be ready to take over in 2008.

After seeing Rey Maualuga play this past season, he appeared to be playing out of position. Not sure if it was because he was thinking too much about his responsibilities and not just reacting - which is his strength. Unless he shows some improvement in the MLB early on, perhaps he will need to be moved outside and let the young kid, Gallipo, man the inside. I saw this young kid in the H.S. All-American game and he is a true MLB - a nose for the ball.
