Kick It

| | Comments (20) |

With David Buehler the only kicker on scholarship, a coach at El Camino College told us that their kicker, Joe Houston, might walk-on next season. He would be eligible immediately.
The Trojans would like to add another kicker before the season, besides Nebraska kicker Jordan Congdon, who must redshirt.

I thought Congdon was coming on as a walk-on...if so why must he redshirt?

Am I mistaken?

Tyler:
Congdon is a transfer from Nebraska.

El Cap,
I know who he is and where is is from but I was under the assumption that he was not offered a scholie from PC.

I thought he was walking on and as a result would not need to redshirt.

Here is a copy of the blurb from a Rivals story dated Feb. 6 2007.

"Kicker Jordan Congdon has decided to move to a university closer to home.

He ended up with four choices - San Diego State, Cal-Berkeley, Stanford and USC and he has decided to walk-on at USC.

Congdon left Nebraska after having two solid campaigns - his freshman and sophomore years. He will still have two years at USC after sitting out 2007."

Transfer rules are about as byzantine as you'd expect from the NCAA, but (for football and basketball) they apply whether a player walks on from another four-year school or enrolls and receives a scholarship at a new four-year school.

The LA Times reported this on 2/10/2007 that Joe Houston was interested in coming. This is nothing new...

well whatever about congdon, they need another kicker this year. Buehler is a great guy and likes to play special teams and such...if he gets hurt...I guess LoJack will be doing the kicking haha.

I have no idea why USC never has very good special teams. I can't remember the last time we had a good FG kicker who could nail it every time from 45-50 yards. Our punt return coverage is terrible although getting better. KO coverage marginally better.

USC1966, you make it sound like it is easy to make a 45-50 yard field goal.

Say what you want about him but Ryan Kileen was a very solid, dependable kicker in 2003 and 2004.

The last time we had a kicker that could kick 50 yarders consistently was Don Schafer. He kicked a 60 yarder to close the first half against ND in 1986. I believe we lost that game 38-37 on a last second field goal to John Carney. Ted Tollner was the coach. Forget the fact that the team folded a 16 point lead in the 4th quarter. Maybe if we went for a 50+ yarder instead of teh QB sneak by Peete in the fourth we would have won? Get a clue 1966.

Good teams don't need great field goal kickers in college.

You go out and whup azz! Vince Young didn't beat us by kicking. You are a moron 1966. Sweat is totally on point. Only really need someone to hit 95%+ for extra points when you score touchdowns.

No worries. McKnight and Green will reestablish Thunder and Lightning to score tons of TD's. The most prolific kicker was in 2005 when all we kicked was 87 or something extra points.

Mike: Don't be such an a-hole. There's no need to bash 1966 just because he raised a valid point. You would think USC would be able to recruit a quality kicker that could bang home 45 yarders with relative consistency. USC can recruit the best of every position, why not kicker?
One reason may be because kickers know that PC does not like to kick field goals. If PC has fourth and 2 at the 30, does he try a 47 yard field goal, or go for it? Everyone knows PC will go for first down 95% of the time (see JD Booty to Steve Smith vs. Cal for evidence) Kickers may not be athletes, but most do have egos and they want to kick the ball. Think back to Troy Aikman at Oklahoma in the late 80's. He was a great QB on a great team, but OU did not throw the ball very much so he transferred to a terrible school (FUCLA) because he wanted to chuck the ball around. Good kickers are the same way. They want to have opportunities to kick field goals, not extra points.
All this kicker talk is moot however, with Mustain transfering here. From all indications, he not only walks on water but he kicks 70 yard field goals and cures cancer as well. (Just kidding Mustain lovers)
Fight On!

Hey Goliath,
It got them 13-9 bitch.

It also got you 7-6...the record that actually matters to teams that are playing real college football and not just for one game.

The 13-9 mentality is exactly why UCLA will never win a football NC in your lifetime. You can't see the forest for the trees...

I guess if UCLA loses early in the NCAA tourney and USC advances you'll come here and post the scores from the regular season too.

Hey, I know this guy Joe Houston, having seen him kick in high school and at El Camino and he could easily be the starting place kicker next year. He is solid and accurate. I'm told that Buehller is only distance and no accuracy. Joe can hit from 45+ and is accurate. He has an offer from other schools but wants to be a trojan

I forgot we had a real good team when Cole Ford played too... Don't worry about the kicker. Scott is a goofball who doesn't know the game.

EC,

The only thing miguelito has ever done is make me laugh.

And actually I don't know your beef with me because you don't actually read or respond to the content of my posts. But there is a reason why 95% of this blog thinks you are a nuisance when you go on your irrational tirades...but you already know that. Make sure you keep taking your meds.
