Magic Number, Cont.

Luckily, we have a spy at Orange Lutheran that informs us quarterback Aaron Corp already breezed through the admissions process at USC. Now Corp will just need to wait for the NCAA Clearinghouse, which is considered a formality.

That's great news. We need Corp in the mix immediately. From what I hear, he's going to beat Sanchez out. Not sure if Corp can beat Mustain out, but he definitely has more game than Sanchez.

Corp can run with the ball better than any quarterback not named Vince Young.

The last time we got a player from Orange Lutheran, he was the flunky kicker who got thrown out of school. So it's great to hear that at least one of their football players has good grades!

Fight On, Aaron!

Why would Corp's eligibility have even been an issue? He's never been mentioned among the questionable admits and I have never heard any rumblings that he had academic problems.

TrojanSAEinNYC - kudos on the kicker comment! Damn near fell of my chair laughing! He was SUCH an embarrassment.

Is this even news? Regardless, hope this kid turns out to be a great Trojan. He seems like a good kid from a great family. I far prefer him to Sanchez.

In time, Corp will be phenomenal. But he will be the second string to Mustain first.

Scott, since you "have a spy at Orange Lutheran," you do realize that we actually have TWO players coming in from there, don't you?

Congrats to Aaron C........having said that , I must also say that he is a great HS QB, but he still has to do his time on the pine before he starts for Troy. MS has done his time and has learned the system.(just like JDB) If anyone remembers, he (Mark S. )too was all world at Mission Viejo HS , was Gatorade Player of the year and #1 High school recruit coming out of MVHS. He was touted as the next Heisman winner at SC. Corp and Mustain were never even mentioned in those terms. They will have their chances to play, but beat out Sanchez?? dont think so.
Sanchez has the tools and the knowledge of the system now. Let the kids play it out. I think Sanchez comes out on top.
PS Mustains 10-9 TD ratio is pathetic, far from SC standards.......so stand by

Fight On !!

trojanq84....riding the pine longer than another QB means nothing in PC's world. Matt Cassel was on the pine for three years, with two of those as the 2nd string behind Palmer, while Leinart was the third string. Then Palmer left and...Cassel was moved to 4th string, eventually to the position of tight end, while Leinart became the starting quarterback.

So length of time in the program means nothing whatsoever to PC.

Look at Oscar Lua and what happened to him with Maualuga.

PC simply does not care how long a player has been in the system and where they were in the depth chart in previous seasons.

Cassel was even ahead of Leinart in spring training, so just goes to show how little that applies to the situation.

It's all about the here and now with PC. The past means nothing to him.

I have seen Sanchez at practices and the few times he came off the bench during games. I was far from impressed. He actually has thrown interceptions in games, too. Not sure what the stats are, but based on playing time, it's probably much worse than Mustain's stats.

As purely high school recruits, without factoring in college records, Mustain was actually far more lauded than Sanchez ever was. He was the most heralded high school quarterback in a decade, perhaps a generation. The only reason you may think that Sanchez was more heralded was due to press in Southern California. But in terms of national exposure, Mustain was in a different league than Sanchez altogether.

I read somewhere that Mustain's 8-0 record as a true freshman starting quarterback is actually the best record in the history of Division 1A college football. I hardly think that's anything to scoff at.

I agree that time on the pine does not carry any weight for Carroll. He has shown on many occasions that freshman will start from the beginning, while older players who previously started or were the 2nd string, will be moved down in favor of younger players.

Younger and newer QBs have taken over from older ones and those who were higher up in the hierarchy.

Re: Mustain, by the time he is eligible to play in 2008, he will have been at SC for an entire year already and will have known the system inside and out. There won't be any plays that he will not have learned about during the year. He won't be allowed to play in 2007, but he will be allowed to practice and attend all the meetings.

Re: offensive system, didn't Sark announce last week that the system was going to be changed, with the new offense designed to complement Mustain's and Corp's styles of play? Doesn't that seem odd to anyone?

It's not that odd considering that all 3 young qb in the system have good scrambling abilities. That would include Sanchez, he's quite mobile himself though not on the level of Corp or Mustain. I couldn't be happier about our situation at QB (and RB, LB for that matter). Let's see who comes out on top. One thing is for sure, who ever is crowned the starter going to have to be great because these kids are very good.

I always got the impression that Sanchez is rather slow. I think he needs to lose some weight. He definitely looks chunky.

Agree with the statements that time on the bench or on the team means nothing to PC when it comes to who will be named starter. Yes, Matt Cassel is the perfect example.

Scott...your spy should be able to enlighten us on the future college of Lutheran's TE Ayles

Some are saying that he is not a lock to SC which many thought

Everyone is talking as if Mustain has announced he's coming to USC. Did I miss something?

And by the way, Sanchez was the MORE heralded QB, not Mustain as mentioned above. In 2005, Rivals ranked Sanchez as the #1 Pro-style QB and #7 overall on the Rivals 100. Mustain was the #2 pro-style QB in 2006 (Safford was #1) and #10 on the Rivals 100. Disregard the post above which states the opposite.

Side Q, what do you think if you're Garrett Green?

No, Mustain was actually far more heralded coming out of high school and received far more awards than any other quarterback in history. Sanchez didn't even come close.

You cite only the Rivals rankings, which isn't one that is often used in national publications.

Mustain was also the Gatorade National Player of the Year, with the only other Trojan to ever win the award being Jeff Byers.

Sanchez hasn't even been able to beat out Booty and won't be able to this year, either.

By the way, Mustain's high school stats would have been even better -- and they were darn good to begin with -- if he hadn't been rested for significant periods during lopsided games.

Mustain truly is the real deal and he could go to so many other schools in the country, yet the fact that he may be coming to USC surely implies that certain assurances must have been made regarding his future role as a Trojan.

Garrett Green - if I were him, I would be hitting those books hard and being thankful that I am attending a school that I would never have been admitted to if it were not an athlete and benefiting from a scholarship. That degree should serve him well for the rest of his life. I'm sure he's not too thrilled about Mustain and Corp coming in, with yet another QB entering the picture next year. But it doesn't matter, because he's still a Trojan and as long as he graduates, he'll be a Trojan for life.

Who cares, you guys sound like my four-year-old niece! Mustain AND Sanchez were both the respective No.1 QB's coming out of High School (Sanchez in 2005 and Mustain in 2006)...and they both “might” be competing to be QB1 at USC!

PS - My niece says that Jimmy Clausen, not Mustain or Sanchez, was the most heralded High School QB in the history of the world.

Big congratulations to Aaron Corp for meeting the NCAA's minimum GPA of 2.5 and SAT of 820! Great accomplishment!

JJH4USC:

Jimmy Clausen actually was the most heralded high school quarterback in the history of California. However, Corp got the award for California's Mr Football State Player of the Year. The irony of it all...

I recall that Green was recruited by and received an offer from Harvard, so he probably would have been able to get in just about any school he wanted. He seems to be a smart kid, so I'm sure that he realized he was taking a chance when opting to go to SC.

Overall, this argument about whether Sanchez or Mustain was more heralded out of high school is moot. I don't care now what kids were ranked two years ago before they picked up a ball in college. It's how they play once they're here that matters. Recall that R. Bush was a 4-star recruit and there's a long list of 5-star players who never panned out. Let's see how they pan out when (or if, as Mustain has yet to commit) they go head-to-head for the starting role. The better the competition, the better the team.

Green's high school GPA was 3.7 and his SAT (old scoring) was 1240. So based on that information, he would not have come close to qualifying for admission to USC.

Green's SAT score of 1240 probably would have been a 1320-1360 at USC because we use the alternative method of combining best sub scores for any SAT test taken. I imagine he took the test more than once - most kids do.

Why is everyone so down on Sanchez? I do agree that Corp is a good ball player who has some wheels, but lets give Sanchez a chance here.

Dawson, what would his GPA be using UCLA's weighted system, 4.3?

Green would have been fine. Low end of the middle (80%) SAT last year was 1220, and his GPA was right at the average.

I gotta agree with tktrojan.

Let's just take our foot off the gas pedal a little, haha.

I mean dang, on this string we already got MM enrolled at USC, competed against and beat out MS, with AC right behind him... JDB out the door and Sanchez kicked to the curb I guess.

First of all, MM has not even enrolled at USC. Despite what wolfie posts, he is also going to look at Tulsa where his high school OC is and other schools and will not be making his final decision until May. I haven't heard him come out on ESPN and say "I am going to USC." So we don't know if we even have him yet.

And if we do, he will need time to adjust to the USC system. Arkansas played him right away last year and he didn't win the heisman trophy or anything. And PC doesn't just toss people down the depth chart because some hot shot came in. If you paid your dues with USC you will get a fair shake. MM has alot of talent, I agree. But I just don't see him coming in and cleaning house and MS transferring or something. Just for the basic reason that he needs some time to work into the system.

Second, MS is a good QB. You don't get to be #1 QB recruit in the nation for nothing. And he has been here for years and knows the system and play calling and has some experience. Hell, he was our saviour earlier this year according to 99% of USC fans who thought Booty sucked. Now Sanchez sucks, I guess.

AC is going to be a great QB, no doubt. I think he has way more talent than Claussen. I heard in some of the latest HS combines he looked better than that Notre Dame retard. But sorry, I don't want to see some 18 year old kid fresh out of high school running the USC offense vs. fUCLA on national TV, no matter how good he runs. Maybe in a year or two.

I think we should give MS his due chance. If MM shows up and can beat him out fairly, OK. But like Dennis Green said about the chicago Bears: "IF YOU WANT TO CROWN THEM, THEN CROWN THEIR ASSES!!"

hahah

A little more info on Garret Green. Probably amongst the fastest runners on the team, or close to J Holland's speed. An all state hurdler and he also plays DB. I can imagine just playing on the scout team there's not a faster QB in the country that he'd not be able to emulate.
Garret Green's scholly is not being wasted by any means.

Geoff,

Green may have been admitted to Harvard, but not "offered" - there are no athletic scholarships at Harvard. Need based financial aid only.

Where to begin...

Ah, Trojan SAEinNYC, Corp could red-shirt this year. In any event, there is no way he "beats out" Sanchez. Have you seen Corp throw the ball? Sanchez was a polished passer in high school. Corp needs a lot of work. Corp will likely be starting as a 4th year junior if everything works out for him...

...MarathonRunner... "...He actually has thrown interceptions in games, too." Really?! Wow?! How about that! A QB who has actually thrown an interception in a game, too! Guess you don't think much of Brett Favre, Payton Manning, or, every great qb who ever played the game, because they all threw INT's, some, like Favre and Elway threw a lot. What does that mean? Would you like to retract and/or re-phrase that one!

Every qb ranked #1 is the "best qb in a generation, or, a decade, or, in the world, or, EVER." Ron Powlus got all of Mustain's "pub" and more. Means squat...

...Flour Tower..."Sanchez hasn't even been able to beat out Booty and won't be able to this year, either." No, I guess when a highly rated, nationally recruited qb has been in the system for 3 years, an incoming frosh qb doesn't have much of a chance, does he?

FYI, Sanchez will be in his 3rd year when Booty graduates. If Mustain can beat him out, my congrats and support to Mustain, but, don't count on it...

Finally some people on this site making sense. All that Mustain talk was giving me a headache. Dude might be good, but I'm not ready to "crown his ass" just yet. tktrojan, USC1966 and dib1 hit the proverbial nail on the head. Let's calm down with all this Mustain talk for a little while. Best case scenario, he doesn't even suit up until 2008. Worst case scenario, he enrolls at fucla and beats up on us for three years.

Mark Sanchez was very polished coming out of high school and he's a great thrower. I'm sure he'll do very well at quarterback in '08. Besides, I'm impressed with his toughness. Did anyone see him take on that Stanford defender in his only extended bit of action? A thing of beauty. And with Booty's back trickier than David Blaine on a tour of Compton, Sanchez may well get his chance this year. (sorry, those are illusions, not tricks)

And in response to FluorTower's "You cite only the Rivals rankings, which isn't one that is often used in national publications." All I have to say is... WHAT? Are you kidding me? Speak into my good ear. If Rivals isn't a respectable recruiting website, I'd like to know where you get your info. Scouts Inc is okay. If you like SuperPrep, they had Sanchez as #1 overall and Mustain as #10 overall his year. You could always go with Jo&Bob.com and get some backwoods assessment from a set of cousins who have "seen a few Texas high school games in person". But for the real deal, I'd suggest Rivals.com.

And as for Geoff's point about Reggie being a 4-star recruit. Reggie Bush was the top ranked running back in his class (by Rivals), the number 2 OVERALL player listed (by Rivals) and had five stars all over him (once again by Rivals). So that kinda throws a wrench in both of your arguments (about Bush and about Rivals)

In the imortal words of my man Smokey from Friday, "Remember it, write it down, take a picure. I don't give a"

So in closing,
Sanchez:Good
Corp: Potentially Good
Mustain: Potentially Here

Enjoy the next few years of Trojan football. In 30 years, you'll look back at the early 2000's, smile, and say, "Wow, that was some good shit."

dib1:
Amen. Maybe the usual suspects get off their clouds and face reality. NOT one thing has been said of Mr. Johnson who was Mark Sanchez HC at Mission Viejo. Mr. Johnson is well respected in Southern California as a great offensive mind as well as a superb QB's coach. Have you heard of Rob Johnson(his son), Drew Brees, Vince Young and Jordan Palmer? Mr. Johnson coached them...
Mr. Marathon conveniently forgot that almost everytime JDB came after Leinart was pulled out he threw an interception. WHY? Because JDB threw into double coverage. I taped those games. In fact I still have them...
Like I said the usual suspects are too busy with:
1. targeting Mark Sanchez
2. bashing Mark Sanchez
Thank you

My take on this:

1) There is no way that someone like Mustain would be coming to USC unless he thinks he will be the starter. Just no way.

2) Issues of tenure on the team mean nothing to PC. He has started freshman over older players who were previously starters. The example of Matt Cassel given above is a good one.

3) Comparing how one player did in high school compared to another is irrelevant. This is college and what they did in the past with 15-17 year olds has no bearing on what they can do in division 1 college football. It's better to compare what one player has done compared to the other in college. Sanchez hasn't done much in college, but Mustain already started as a true freshman.

4) Length of time in the system does not apply in this case. Mustain would enroll as early as this May for summer school, so by the time he is eligible to play in 2008, he will have been in the system for over a year and would know it inside out. Besides, didn't Sarkisian say that there is going to be a new system implemented for the offense next season? So Mustain will be part of the new system from Day One.

5) The secrecy of Mustain's campus visit is rather strange. He has been kept away from Sanchez and other players, while he met directly with the coaches and his former Arkansas teammate. This was not the case with Corp's and Szakacsy's recruiting trips. Strange days in Troy...

It really doesn't matter to PC what kind of tenure someone has on the team and to say that one person knows the system better than another also does not apply. With over a year in the program, Mustain will be as accustomed to the system as anyone.

I genuinely think that Mustain is a thoroughbred and he has already accomplished more as a true freshman starter than any quarterback on the current roster or any who are coming in.

So based on that, I think Mustain will start in 2008. I simply do not see why else he would come unless he is being groomed as Booty's successor.

I still maintain that Sanchez was more heralded coming out of HS. It is a moot point, but Mustain wasn't even the #1 QB on Rivals that year.

Sanchez is the real deal and will be fantastic when he is the starter.

All this talk for Mustain is funny. He got beaten out by Casey Dick last year and lost his starting job.

That being said, the kid's got lots of talent and will be a welcome addition if he comes. If he doesn't, we're still loaded at QB with Sanchez and Corp. Though Clausen was called a "ten year prospect" at QB by Rivals, Corp beat him out for state player of the year.

Fight On!

A couple more responses to the above:

Reggie Bush was a 5 star, not a 4 star. Lendale was a 4.

To those who think Mustain has gotten assurances of starting, I think you are absolutely nuts. That is not Pete's style. The only assurance he would get is that he would be able to compete for a position to start. Whoever is best will be the man.

also, thanks for the info on Green. Didn't know he was so fast and can play DB as well.

Let's get going and another 34 or more in a row!

Fight on.

JamesW99,

All that was promised Mustain is that he will be allowed to compete for the starting job.

If you don't understand the mindset of the elite athletes, here it is in a nutshell: They all think they are the greatest and so therefore, they don't worry about something like a nationally recruited high school all american who will be in his 3rd year in the program already being there.

Mustain believes that if he is truly allowed to compete for the starting spot that he will win it.

That's all. Pure and simple.

He is not being "groomed" to take over.

Sanchez, who is going into his 2nd year in the program is being "groomed" because he is here already as the heir apparent.

Mustain could beat out Sanchez. But, unless Sanchez has some injury issues, it's highly unlikely.

Not saying that Mustain is Brandon Hance, but, when Hance's transfer from Purdue was announced, everybody, and I mean everybody, assumed that Hance was going to be the next starting qb. Because, why would he come to USC if that wasn't the case?

Mustain will have to be consistently better than Sanchez, not as good, not better on certain days, to beat out a Coach Johnson product who has talent, toughness, and, can play.

Barring injury, expect to see Sanchez lining up under center on the first series of the first game in 2008.

Wow, I feel like I need to defend myself here:

Scout had Bush at 4 star.

http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=15&p=8&c=1&nid=222247

Overall point I'm making here is that stars and rankings from high school don't necessarily guarantee anything. Let's see what happens on the field if or when Mustain gets here.
