A Trojan Retires

Verle W. Sorgen, Coordinator of Football Officiating for the Pacific-10 Conference and a former USC baseball player, has announced his retirement from the position.

Here's the rest of the release from the Pac-10:

Sorgen, a resident of Fairfax, Calif., has held his position for 21 years. He succeeded the late
Jack Sprenger in 1986. Previously, he officiated in the Conference for 21 years, including the
last six years as a referee.
“Verle Sorgen has been a superb coordinator,” Hansen commented. “Not only is he
recognized nationally as one of the experts on the rules of college football and on officiating
mechanics, he has been a strong leader of the officials in the Pac-10 program and a very
efficient and effective administrator of that complex program.
“A former student-athlete himself, Verle also has an excellent feel for the game and an
understanding of how it is played and coached, and of the relationship which exists among
officials, players and coaches during a game.
“Under his leadership, the Pac-10’s program has been one of the nation’s best, and we are
indebted to him for his dedicated service to the Conference and to the game of college
football,” Hansen added.
Sorgen will continue to be associated with the Conference as he will oversee the Pac-10's
instant replay program, working with the new coordinator.
Sorgen is a member of the editorial advisory committee of the NCAA Football Rules
Committee. He also has been a leader in the development of the instant replay system
adopted by college football for the past two seasons. He is a former chair of the national
collegiate commissioners association football coordinators group.
A native of Riverside, Calif., he attended the University of Southern California, where he
participated in basketball, track and field and baseball. He and his wife Marny have three
grown children.
Hansen indicated a search for a replacement for Sorgen would begin immediately.

The $uc trOJANs are especially INDEBTED to this chump for all the calls he orchestrated to keep the $UC BCS Money Machine rolling for the conference.

A couple of examples:

The Reggie Bush fumble that was, but wasn't called, in the UCLA game a couple of years back...

The missed fumble call last year in the Oregon-Oklahoma game...

And it goes on....

Thanks for the memories!

Please explain how the blown call in the Oregon-Oklahoma game affected USC's "BCS Money Machine" in any way.

13-9

Maybe the Pac10 can finally get rid of Libby?

Refs should rotate the country and learn to deal with different people. A national system would help eliminate the ref bias that every team feels they play against.

Why are conference officials apparently in their position for life anyway? A person should hold their conference position for 5-10 years tops, then new blood and ideas are needed to keep the conference on top of: better refs, better tv contracts, and business practices. If they want to rotate in the company fine, but change positions so things do not stagnate. Example I believe that chairman of the BCS changes every 2 years.

Hansen hasn't stood up for any one of the Pac10 schools that were hosed in the BCS standings. Lets see Oregon in 2001, USC in 2003, Cal in 2004, Oregon in 2005. I might even mention UC South in 1998 if it wasn't for our good friend with only numbers and symbols in his name.

This guy was the worst! Perhaps there will be some competence and fairness in the future. Hopefully, we won't see another Toejam hack in the position.

Why dont all you bRUIN honks go post on your own blog?? I'll answer that .....because it SUCKS .......Ive been there, its as pathetic as your fan base .... for gods sakes, what other school sells there own Rose Bowl tickets to the opposing school only to see them on TV get destroyed , uh ucla does ......twice no less...you hacks must be there only true (but deranged ) fans left. Go cheer on your guttyy little bRUINS and enjoy life as you know it ..We at TROY like our lives and love our teams .so go away now
