Unhappy Crowd

A USC coach said this week he detected hostile feelings during a visit to Dorsey High School, apparently over the use (or lack of use) regarding tailback Stafon Johnson. Johnson said this week his injured shoulder feels better and he will be ready for training camp, although there remains the possibility he will transfer.

Seems like the folks at Dorsey fail to acknowledge that Stafon was by numerous accounts slow to pick up the offense, took too many plays off in practice and could not block well enough to keep a quarterback from getting killed.

Having said that, the tailback position is wide open - why transfer now? If he is healthy, more mature and ready to go - he could easily take control of the position.

The above may be true, but hard feelings might be because we needlessly burned a year of eligibility by needlessly playing him, I think, the OSU game.

I completely agree. If you want to earn a starting sport or at least crack the lineup, you need to work at it and not blame the coaches for lack of play. Simple as that.

I think coaches have the authority to "needlessly burn" eligibility when attempted to find a running game against a tougher than expected opponent. I'm sure Pete could have cared less about Stafon's eligibility in Corvallis. All I hear is whining whenever Stafon Johnson's name is brought up. Prove all the naysayers wrong on the practice field or transfer to an inferior school. Simple choice.

Didn't Johnson say just last week that he was not considering transferring? Why is the possibility mentioned in this post without a quote or at least a source to substantiate it?

I knew I saw this somewhere. It's from Gary Klein's USC report in yesterday's LA Times (not last week - my mistake):

Running back Stafon Johnson is not practicing while recovering from shoulder surgery, but he said he was looking forward to competing for playing time during training camp in August.

Johnson dismissed speculation that he might transfer.

"It just shows that people are still aware of me," he said.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
