Gator Invasion

Florida coach Urban Meyer hired Taft High football coach Troy Starr as his director of football operations Monday. Starr coached at Taft for 14 seasons, producing USC players Gregg Guenther, Steve Smith and Jamere Holland.
Starr will oversee the ``overall coordination of recruiting'' for the Gators according to a statement released by the university. Does this mean Florida intends to invade Southern California?

HELL NO! THIS IS USC'S HOUSE!!!

Yeah, but wait until they feel the humidity, May through September, 95 degrees F/95% humidity. Who needs that when you already have a championship football program in your back yard? Just have them speak with Junior Seau.

Pete Carroll only goes to Florida if he believes the player will be a first rounder. Urban Meyer can try and recruit SoCal all he wants. Every coach does. But I doubt he is a finisher on the living room couch like Pete Carroll is. If they go head to head, I like PC's chances. Fight On!

He can hire whoever he wants. Cali kids are too smart to move to FL, with the 100% humidity and good ole' boy network...

Not only does PC have to deal with "Jabba-the-hut Weis", now he gets to deal with an "Urban assault". As in the case of Jabba, PC will continue to bring in the top echelon recruits and the rest can be swallowed up by the Swamp and the Sisters of overrated, underachieving from Southbend. Someone should notify Dorrell that he now has stiffer competition for the rest of the SoCal High School recruits.

Brilliant move. Obvious why this guy is successful. Top recruiter just got better. It will pay off. Not greatly but significantly. As for Cal guys going to Florida, that is all they did until PC arrived.

Garrett should make similar move and hire top Florida high school coach.

I have to admit that the Gator program under Urban Meyer sure looks a heck of a lot like the USC program when it was beginning its run with PC. They're doing all the little things and putting it together well. The question will be whether Pete will see this as a challenge and step up and meet Urban for the next few years or whether he's off to the pros in the next year or so. I'm hoping the former, obviously.

Has Pete Carroll ever shirked a challenge? Me thinks not. But he could use a little help with a facilities upgrade.

Maybe Florida can be like Taft and lose in the title game every year...to USC!!!

And USC still doesnt have a decent Special Teams coach.

Interesting hire since the one Taft player that I can recall going to Florida...was Josh Portis who has since transferred.
Starr is a good high school coach, but his pull doesnt extend far beyond the San Fernando Valley.
The Orange County pipeline to SC should remain unaffected.

Has anybody considered that Troy Starr may just be THE best manager of the "at risk" student-athlete in the nation? I think you must look at the astute managerial abilities of Urban Meyer and realize that not only is he an exceptional judge of athletic talent but of managerial and leadership talent as well. And do you think that the Florida staff's time is best spent on a plane six hours to and from Southern California, with all of that talent in Florida sitting there to be harvested? Read between the lines on this hire to understand what is going on!
