Lockdown!

| | Comments (18) |

If you were on campus and wanted to go into the Bovard Administration building today, there were security guards at each entrance and you needed to show ID and be brought in by someone working inside the building.
The building will be on lockdown the rest of the semester. That's because of student protests to convince the administration to adopt fair-labor reforms and reports of death threats against USC president Steven Sample.
And here we thought the biggest protests to hit Sample were the angry phone calls in 2001 following the hiring of Pete Carroll.

Students are leading Fair-labor reform protests?? What is this? Berkeley???

What "fair" and "caring" people to threaten a man's life if he doesn't adopt a certain policy. The Mob does the same thing.

For the record that I said it: Steve Sample has done so much for SC. He's improved the school academically, he's expanded the campus and facilities, and let's not forget we're enjoying great times athletically as well.

Nope. They were following the announcement that the Coliseum would follow the rest of the PAC-10 and not serve beer anymore.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I'm not to sure about the "death threats". No mention of "death threats" in any of the initial reports. From what I've read, its seems like "death threats" were added to the administration response to justify their slightly over-the-top actions.

Petingtong: This is what happens when you improve student quality. Hopefully, the days of "rich, drunk and stupid" are long gone.

man this has been going on for a few years now. It's a small group of radical students. I just don't understand. Who is to say what is fair-labor practice? For those kids making nickels/day that is what keeps them alive. Why would you rather make the companies pay them $5/hour and therefore less jobs for the kids who really need the money to survive? You gotta love mindless protesting

Let the student body put it to a vote. Adopt a higher minimum wage(i.e. fair-labor practice), and then if adopted the students pay higher tuition, rent and board to cover the costs. Start teaching these students the economic realities of running a business. If this is what they want prepare to pay another 5% (roughly $2,000)a year for school.

You have no idea what you are talking about. The protests had to do with foreign "sweatshop" wages. More "expensive" hats and jackets have nothing to do with tuition.

What a moron.

I suggest that you might actually read the underlying story before commenting. How about Reading Comprension 101 for you?

Ugh, no wonder why too mnay people in L.A. cling to the old stereoptypes about USC.

Desmo,
Get over yourself. Insulting people and spouting off about old, stupid, rich alumni simply makes you a jerk. I was simply commenting on the information in the blog and assumed it was a similar argument to the LAX Hotels living wage protest. My apologies for not understanding the exact issue you and your militant crew are pushing this week. Maybe the old, stupid, rich alumni should stop donating money to the endowment fund offering scholarships to the likes of you. We are all glad the University is attracting top candidates, now good luck on your protest and try to show some class.

I actually like USC's response. 13 students stage a sit-in because Sample won't talk to them? Really? I gotta say, I prefer "rich, drunk, and stupid" to "pompous, bombastic, and stupid." I'm all for protest, but if you're going to stage something like this, you better have some leverage (more than 13 students inside + 35 students outside), and you better be willing to live with the consequences (i.e. suspension or expulsion). They didn't have any support, nor did they even care that much about their cause. They were just bored.

As for hiring PC, I was pissed too. Oops.

I don't really care about the substance of the protest. I do care about Mike Jackson's completely uncalled for repsonse. Then the lies about "death threats." Mike Jackson is a liar and an a-hole. Period.

15/70: Here's a little update for you. The younger, richer, smarter alums are the one donating the most money. The old, not-so-rich, drunk and stupid alumns are no longer a factor. That's why most legacy admits all but have vanished. The old, not-so-rich anymore, drunk and stupid alums really only show their bloated faces around the athletic department. Other than that, they are pretty much are no longer part of the University's overall conversation, thank God.

I can just imagine if the tasering of the UCLA student happened at SC. Most of the cro-mags on this board would have thought the rent-a-cops did not go far enough.

Ugh.

Desmo, you're worse than the UCLA posters who make things up. Please get off the football blog and return to the drum circle. Thank you.

Desmo,
I doubt that the bulk of the 2 billion+ raised the last few years have come from the graduates in the last 10 years who are still paying off their student loans, but nice try. Whether you got into USC with a 4.0 and some older alumni got in with a 3.0 (with a little partying) does not make up for your lack of class. Respect, humility and the understanding that we all know less than 5% of the knowledge in the universe; will get you further in life. Good luck.

USC currently has more legacy students, SCions, than ever before in its history. They comprise about 20% of the current student body, compared to less than 5% in the early 1990s.
