Mystery Mustain

Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain did visit USC over the weekend but he did not provide the Trojans with a commitment. This is consistent with the view it would be crazy to incite Razorback fans with any announcement while Mustain is still attending classes there.

National Enquire, (err umm) SW... enough already with the prom queen tease concerning Mustain. Don't write any more about the pretend dates at Troy, let us know only when the Mustain has signed on the dotted line. Until then, Troy has got the "Booty". Not to mention the Sanchez and the "Corp" (unless he's sitting pretty as a red-shirt). And let's not forget about Mike (I'll fake anyone out on a FG) McDonald. Take a look at Huddle picture 566 http://www.teamandras.com/usc/photos2007_04_07_Huddle/index.htm A right handed image of his daddy. Fight on!

Seriously, Scott, I have said the exact same thing about why Mustain will not officially announce until the semester is over for months and you have even gone so far as to say it, too, just recently.

So why do you keep repeating the same thing? Is it because everyone here enjoys watching El Capitan make a fool of himself every time Mustain's name is mentioned? So, alright, I agree that is kind of funny! You got me on that one.

Anyway, Mustain will make his official announcement when the semester is over so as to to cause tension for himself while he is still in classes at Arkansas. He said all along that he would make the announcement by May, so is this news or is it a re-run?

If Mustain saw what I saw at the Coliseum on Saturday, I am pretty sure he spent Sunday finalizing his transfer paperwork. Sanchez has the physical tools, but boy did he look terrible during the scrimmage.

And where was Hershel Dennis hiding? I hope he gets a 6th year of eligibility, he looked fantastic! Washington might slip another spot in the RB rotation.

And boy do our young wide receivers look good too! Patterson, Hazelton, and Ausberry are really, really talented kids.

PS - I don’t know if anyone caught the last High School All Star Game, but it looks like USC and UCLA clearly have the two best players in the country coming in next year. Love is a beast around the rim and makes a great outlet pass, and OJ Mayo is a really, really special player. Mayo is also a great passer and can shoot from anywhere...the kid was drilling NBA threes when he took over the 4th Quarter.

I'm usually in the same boat at the other guys but find it interesting that he visited this past weekend.

No kidding. After what I saw at the scrimmage, Mustain must have been having the biggest laugh on his flight home.

The only thing that Sanchez ever had going for him was that he was "The Other Quarterback." Anytime there is a problem on the field, ignorant football fans want to replace the starting quarterback with whoever "the other quarterback" is and assume "the other quarterback" is some kind of miraculous savior.

Well, Sanchez had a free ride this past year because he was the only viable "other quarterback" and some people assumed he was good because they had never seen him play.

After seeing the scrimmage, goodbye Sanchez! That boy cannot do a darn thing right. It was consistent with what I had heard about him from those who had seen him at practice for the past two years. There is no doubt in this world why Booty got the starting job and now it makes perfect sense why Mustain is being brought in.

Following Sanchez's performance at the scrimmage, where he had more than enough chances to impress, he failed miserably at every situation. Mustain is going to come in and start, period.

PC and Sarkisian know what they're doing by bringing Mustain in and Mustain probably had more fun at the Coliseum that anyone else there.

Did you hear how many people at the Coliseum kept remarking how horrible Sanchez was? There were even boos! All of this after Sanchez had told the OC Register a few days ago that the scrimmage was probably going to be his last chance to impress the coaches to move him from the back-up QB to the starting position. Obviously he failed at that.

Sanchez had his chance and he blew it big time. And he did it in front of Mitch Mustain!

Mustain in 2008!

While I admit I get excited by all the Mustain to SC talk, even I have to say that there are only so many times you can say the same thing over and over again.

Granted, Mustain coming to SC will be the biggest story in the off-season and the biggest recruit of the class, but is there anything new to this story about Mustain not officially committing to avoid angering his fellow Arkansas students and former teammates that we haven't heard before?

I didn't see the scrimmage, but by all news and fan reports, Sanchez clearly did not impress. Too bad for him. I can't say I'm too upset, because I don't want someone like Sanchez, who has been arrested and been in jail for a sex crime, ever representing SC. So it's the perfect time for Mustain to come in and be the next great USC quarterback.

Fight on, Mitch!

Right now I'd rather have James Wilson and Sam Young in camp than Mustain. We are loaded at skill positions, but could use a few more "big uglies," imho.

Don't get me wrong, if Mustain comes, I'll welcome him and if he pushes Sanchez to be better or beats him and Aaron for the job, then so be it.

I just hope PC loads up on linemen next recruiting year....

Mark Sanchez sucks. Bring on Mitch Mustain.

If you guys really wanna get excited, wait till you see my 6-pack abs and rock-hard glutes.

I'm comin...what about you?

America's #1 QB of All-Time

get off sanchez and give him a chance.
btw.. SC needs to sign 6' 5" quarterback(s).. that's what today's game dictates.

Scott -

I am looking forward to the day you actually write "Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain made an official announcement of where he will transfer to."

Until then, you will keep repeating the same non-news until everyone in the world has been made aware that he has not made an announcement.

I know you keep saying your blog has more hits than even the Daily News' main page, but it may be due to the fact that people keep coming on here to see when Mustain's announcement will be, only to be told that he won't make it until May.

So I assume you'll make another dozen or so "Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain has still not made an official announcement and will not do so until the semester is over" until then.

Must be good for your blog hits, I guess. Can't fault you for that. It's the name of the game.

For what it's worth, I think Mustain is the next starter, but there are only so many posts I can read that he hasn't made his official announcement.

At least May is only three weeks away.... What will you do once Mustain actually announces?

Was in town for the scrimmage over the weekend. Sanchez proved that he was the most over-hyped piece of garbage. Just total trash, incapable of doing anything right. Just another Whitney Lewis. Let Mitch Mustain era at USC begin!

When all is said and done, once Mitch Mustain comes to USC, the only thing Sanchez will ever be remembered for will be for being a fool who was arrested for raping a student. Damn fool!

Sanchez has to overcome his performance. Mustain is a 2008 issue.

For 2007, from what I have seen, McDonald should not be forgotten. He can do job if called upon.

Morantz:

Green is above McDonald. Then for 2007, you also have to factor in Corp, who will most likely be above both Green and McDonald (assuming he does not redshirt).

Sanchez is finished. I was one of the 15,000 or so at the Coliseum on Saturday and after two years at SC, he showed us that he simply does not have it.

Agree with IBParadiseValley - Sanchez is Whitney Lewis Part II. All high school hype and completely out of his depth in college. He either underthrew every ball or overthrew. No accuracy whatsoever. There were interceptions and fumbles galore. His ground game was so lacking, I was wondering why he was even on a football scholarship. I wouldn't be surprised if Corp jumped over Sanchez in 2007 (assuming, of course, Corp does not redshirt). Mustain over Sanchez in 2008 is a no-brainer. After seeing Sanchez play and comparing him to what I saw last season of Mustain, there is no way in this world that Sanchez will ever beat out Mustain. Just not going to happen.

So this is how I see the QB chart for 2007:

1) Booty
2) Corp (if he doesn't redshirt) or Sanchez (if Corp redshirts)
3/4) Green
4/5) McDonald

2008:

1) Mustain
2) Corp
3) Sanchez
4) Green

Sanchez was telling the media all week that the scrimmage would be his chance to impress the coaches and he failed royally before the Trojan faithful. I was more impressed by McDonald than Sanchez on Saturday.

If Mustain's plan was to check out Sanchez as his competition, he must be pretty cocky right about now.

I was at the scrimmage as well (got in free with my student ID!). I looked around for Mustain, but was never able to find him. Pretty consistent with reports that he's being brought in under Sanchez's nose and in complete secrecy.

Saw the performance that Sanchez put on for everyone and came to the conclusion that it finalized Mitch Mustain's plans for the rest of his life. Mustain will now transfer to SC, start for SC in 2008, go to the NFL after that and be known as one of the great quarterbacks that SC has ever produced. All because Sanchez gave Mustain every reason in the world to feel confident with an absolutely all-around abysmal performance.

It was one thing when Sanchez was playing against 14 and 15 year olds in high school and bragging about he was beating little boys whose voices were still breaking, but to see him out there with grown men - he just fell apart and couldn't do one single thing right.

That Saturday will go down as the day that forever changed the lives of both Sanchez and Mustain. Sanchez's career in football pretty much ended, while Mustain's entire future was mapped out.

If you weren't there you should have seen it - Sanchez put on a real stinker. Heck, I bet even Corp was gleeful on the drive back to OC with his parents.

El Captain:
Hang tough Bro. I am proud of you. I will be glad to see that Scout Team QB show up in the hood. I am in SEC country. I saw many Hog games. Why do you think Nut pulled this kid. They had better success with running on third and long. Nut wasn't having anymore of that nonsense. He had cannons in his RB's and he shot em. That whole HS team and OC left for Tulsa. Watch next year as Tulsa gets waaxed. Question is why didn't MM go with em? Hmmm!

I finally got to see Sanchez get some real playing time on Saturday. He was dreadful. Bottom line - once Mustain enrolls, Sanchez will never see the field again.

Apparently the only reason or excuse some posters need to bash Sanchez is a mention of Mustain.

I'm glad this is not an alumni board, this string along with earlier ones is embarrasing.

Jay#42 has a point.. MM is really unproven (as Sanchez is unproven) but to post all these comments like MM is the end all of QBs is crazy talk. stop the nonsense.
SC needs to stop recruiting short QBs.

Pablo -

On the contrary, Mustain is a proven successful quarterback at the college level. He started eight games as a true freshman in the SEC -- the toughest conference in the country -- and went 8-0. No other true freshman quarterback has ever had a better record in the history of college football.

Mustain is not a project; he's already a proven winner at the highest levels of college football. He will come in and instantly contribute as a starter (after sitting out the 2007 season per NCAA rules).

Sanchez may have have played well in high school two years ago, against young adolescent boys, but has not only accomplished nothing at the college level, from what we have seen, he's simply not equipped for the college game. He embarrassed himself when he had the chance to show everyone what he was capable of and put himself even further down the depth chart than ever before.

Mustain is completely proven. Sanchez showed us all this past week that he simply doesn't possess the skills to be successful at the college level and will drop down even further on the depth chart when Mustain comes to SC and, possibly, even when Corp arrives.

USCinema - why did MM get benched at the end of the year when the games really mattered?

Pablo - I don't know the internal workings of the Arkansas coaching staff, so can't give you an answer one way or another. There are many conflicting reports out there from various coaches, player and parents, so I suggest you go read those to see what each person has said were the reasons behind Mustain's benching and the cause behind his request to be released from his scholarship from Arkansas.

Doesn't really matter, though, Mustain is still worlds ahead of Sanchez. He's done more in college and the fact that Carroll and Sarkisian are bringing him in speaks volumes about not just Mustain, but also what they think of Sanchez.

The funny thing about this hype around Mustain is that everyone was saying the exact same thing last year about Sanchez. It was all about how Booty was no good and Sanchez was going to take the starting spot in the Fall.

I wouldn't write-off Mark Sanchez just yet. One bad game and everyone has given up on him. Pretty sad, actually.

USCinema,
no need to read the reports, all i know is the best player plays especially when that team is competing for the SEC title as well as national championship and your boy MM sat.. had very limited action. check out his stats for the year... not that impressive. 10td 9int 52%cmp.

i'd rather see SC get the best big QB on the market in the '08 recruiting class rather than bring in MM and potentially lose the recruit because of the amount of QBs on the team.

if MM is better than any other HS QB in the '08 class then great, i hope SC gets MM but if there is another BIGGER QB out in the market for the '08 class then it looks like a bad move.

Pablo:

I would hardly consider Mustain to be "my boy." Saying someone is good and providing empirical data is different than trumpeting a player for my own personal reasons.

Now, since your name is Pablo, should I go so far as to say the reason you are so pro-Sanchez is for the same reason that El Capitan promotes him and gets angry at anyone who praises Mustain?

Fact is, Mustain got more awards coming out of high school than any other player in history, not just for his position of quarterback. But that was high school and it has no relevance on college performance. In college, he got the best record ever for a true freshman starter. You can't get better than 8-0. It's perfect.

Mustain is a proven commodity, not a project. He has already accomplished more in college in one season than Sanchez will have done after three entire years since high school.

It's not a personal thing, although I will admit that I am troubled by the fact that Sanchez was arrested and went to jail for sexual assault. I don't deny I have issues with Sanchez's character, but that is separate from why I believe Mustain is simply a more accomplished and better quarterback.

CalPolyBruinFan - as I said above:

The only thing that Sanchez ever had going for him last year was that he was "The Other Quarterback." Anytime there is a problem on the field, ignorant football fans want to replace the starting quarterback with whoever "the other quarterback" is and assume "the other quarterback" is some kind of miraculous savior.

Well, Sanchez had a free ride this past year because he was the only viable "other quarterback" and some people assumed he was good because they had never seen him play.

With Mustain, people have already seen what he is capable of. It's not based on assuming the other QB is better. Sanchez has now been seen and exposed as someone out of his league in college. Playing against 21 to 23 year olds is a whole lot different than playing against 14 year olds from Orange County.

I am not pro MS. I am pro USC, socal, cali, and Pac-10. I saw De laSalle wax that famed HS of JB's. I saw socal HS kids run the brakes of Texas HS All Star teams until the series was stop. JB was suppose to beat out ML. JB got some serious pine time. We have CP, ML, and MS going to HS in the same area. We have socal kids supplying the west coast, ND and Texas. I think the competition level speaks volumes in SoCal. It really pains me to see Cali kids leave the state. Wake up, our Heismans are all Cali kids. Why because they are pulled from a population of 35 Mill people. There will be some serious competition. That is the basis for choosing MS over any outta state QB. I could be wrong. These are my undisputable facts. But my worst fear is with this outta state recruiting. This could open the door for Pac-10 schools start taking the best kids out of our back yard again. USC_1966 knows about those years.

USC isn't "bring[ing Mustain] in." He wanted to transfer after proving his chops and no being given the chance to excel further. It was a whole saga reported on an Arkansas blog.

"I wouldn't write-off Mark Sanchez just yet. One bad game and everyone has given up on him. Pretty sad, actually."

I remember Booty's inconsistent start last year before Kiffin aired out the offense. Everyone, me included, clammored for Booty's head in favor of Sanchez. He just had an off-day. He's worthy of USC, and he'll get his chances to prove it to the nonbelievers.

Mustain proven? C'mon...the only reason Arkansas was 8-0 with him at QB was because of Darrin McFadden. Mustain never proved he could complete a simple 10 yard out pattern for a first down. Now, we find out(via the Ark.Democrat-Gazette Newspaper) that in March, he and his mother filed a Freedom of Information request for Nutt's cell phone records. They didn't stop at Nutt, they also requested phone records for AD Frank Broyles and their secretaries. Mitch may be a great QB...but he sure does bring a whole lot of baggage with him. I wish him the best of luck. I also wish Coach Carroll and the Trojan Nation good luck in dealing with Mitch's mother! Be careful criticizng his play, Momma will go to the press and it won't be pretty. We've seen it firsthand.

Hog 123, is on point. Mustain completed 52.3 percent of his passes last season for 894 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions. (112 ypg for 8 wins). The spread, no-huddle offense Malzahn used at Springdale was never a factor. Arkansas relied on its running game -- because they had a cannon in tailback Darren McFadden who was the Heisman Trophy runner-up and racked up 1694 or 130 ypg. He also had a running mate Jones who was no slouch either at pancaking tacklers. A famous coach stated, "he didn't like the pass because three things could happen and two of them were bad. Give me three yards and a cloud of dust." Well in the Hogs case this was true of the pass, however, they got a hellava lot more than three yards before the cloud of dust.
