Open Forum, Part III

Here's answers to Thursday's questions:

The shotgun is occasionally used in practice with varying success. It didn't really work in the scrimmage but that's the first time it was used in a game scenario, so that's not surprising.

USC is looking to recruit several offensive linemen this year, with this week's big prospect Daniel Campbell of Aldine, Texas. There's no set number because it depends on quality and who is willing to commit.

Special teams in the spring are often disastrous, especially with snapper Will Collins out. Kickoffs returns featured Jamere Holland last week but he was a little tentative. Desmond Reed and Cary Harris can handle that job and some freshman might get in the mix.

Recruits are welcome to attend practice and visit the campus as long as it's their decision and they were not illegally contacted by a coach/etc. to visit.

The quarterback situation does not seem to have changed. Pete Carroll's talked to the team about an open battle but few believe it actually would happen. Mark Sanchez would probably be shocked if he were told he beat out John David Booty.

Cary Harris looks solid and had a big interception last week in practice.

Matt Spanos made a big move this week to be the starting center (if eligible). Nick Howell and Kris O'Dowd will battle to be the backup, with Howell's experience an edge over O'Dowd's talent.

Offensive tackle Matt Kalil of Servite seems an ideal redshirt candidate so he can gain weight.

By the way, even though Kalil is nearly 6-7, he was shorter than Crespi tight end Joseph Fauria, who looked to be about 6-9. However, neither USC nor UCLA have offered Fauria.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT WITH THIS?
________________________

I've been having a problem with this site's "feed." I use Newsgator and the feed worked up until about 2 months ago. Now it's not.

Anyone have any ideas?

(btw... I have the feed URL as http://www.insidesocal.com/usc/atom.xml )

Sorry Conor never used newsgator..I use the Opera browser and can get the feed from here through that..

Anyway..Matt Spanos?? That really surprises me..Being that he was #52 ranked DT in the country when he signed with us, who switched to offense and has been a career backup. I would of thought O'Dowd would of beat him on talent alone. Well, hope it works out..

Don't get too excited about Dan Campbell. He'll never qualify. He's Juco all the way.

Kavario Middleton: does he have an offer or not? About a month ago he was listed as having one, then it was changed to no, last week it was back to yes now it is back to no.

Fauria has an offer from UCLA; not sure why Scott says he doesn't. EJ Woods, another Bruin commit and fellow classmate at Crespi, says he is trying to convince Joeseph to become a Bruin. He's a high prospect kid who already has offers from LSU and Nebraska. I don't think SC would be in the running even if they did offer at this point.

CalPolyBruinFan:

When you have a commitment coming from Blake Ayles, then you can afford to be choosy about offering Fauria. Unless you're going to tell me that Fauria is better than Ayles?

Fauria is ND from what I've heard.

Hey man, easy on CalPolyBruinFan, he speaks truth.

There was a good article on Joseph Fauria over at Scout.com about three days ago saying how he (Fauria) did not feel the love from USC's coaches during Junior Day. So at this point, i do not think an offer from USC would do much to sway Fauria, nor do i think he will get one.

Also there is no assurance that Blake Ayles will be a Trojan. There are strong rumors he does not get along with ex-teammate and current Trojan Micheal Reardon, and may look elsewhere for college. So lets not go Donovan Warren about this one.

Also comparing Ayles and Fauria is tough because from what Scott says Fauria is about 6'9" which is an easy target in the red-zone where Ayles is more of an open field threat.

I posted twice...i'm dumb.

Hey Scott, can you make a post as to where to address our next set of questions for the next open forum?

QB and WR need a good chemistry...like Marvin Harrison and Peyton Manning..Scott do you think JDB is developing this with Vidal Hazelton and Patrick Turner/David Ausberry?

Thanks!

Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
