What Have You Done Lately?
Interesting comment USC coach Pete Carroll made about the tailbacks: ``The young guys fell out of the competition getting hurt.''
If you get hurt, you fall behind at a program stocked with high school All-Americans. USC has six Parade All-Americans at tailback next season, by the way. That's why this spring's biggest disappointments might be the fact neither Emmanuel Moody nor Stafon Johnson were able to do much because of injuries.
That left Hershel Dennis and Chauncey Washington for the Coliseum scrimmage.
``Chauncey and Hershel have been playing since I was in college,'' Carroll said.

I would still rather have the horses in the USC stable, then any other college backfield. It doesn't matter about the injuries or slow progression to the current stock of Trojan ponies, you know that there are college programs all over the nation going "please transfer for here".

People forget that Hershel was one of the highest rated recruits in the country when he came out of high school in 2002. Depending on your publication of choice, he was either the first or second ranked RB in the country along with Lorenzo Booker. Dennis is nothing to scoff at.

Seriously...I forwarded some practice photos to a friend who used to attend USC but doesn't have the time to follow football year round and got one reply from about 100 pictures.
"Hershel Dennis is still at USC? Wasn't he there when were were seniors?" (We graduated in '99 and it does seem like was there back then). Maybe Herschel can be like Justin Fargas to this eyar's team - old reliable. He certainly knows the blocking schemes like the back of his hand.

Greg B,
I went out and checked on your statement just to fill some time. You are only partially right. Hershel was a top (4 star) prospect but he was not the #2 RB overall in 2002.
According to Rivals he was the #7 RB behind Lorenzo Booker (FSU), Ciatric Fason (UF), Michael Johnson (UVA), Jerious Norwood (Miss St), Maurice Clarett (tOSU), DeShawn Wynn (UF) and Justin Vincent (LSU).
According to Scout.com he was the #12 RB overall behind Lorenzo Booker (FSU), Ciatric Fason (UF), Michael Johnson (UVA), Gerald Riggs (Tenn), Maurice Clarett (tOSU), DeShawn Wynn (UF), Justin Vincent (LSU), Jason Allen (Tenn), David Richard (MSU), Paul Mosley (Bay) and Reshard Dudley (UGA).
Not trying to call you out or say that HD isn't a very good back (I personally like him a lot) but just trying to add some facts to the discussion.

Forgot to add...Hershel was the #2 RB on the West Coast though in both scouting publications.

Thanks for the correction. I went to high school with him and we were all big HD fans at Poly. I should have gone through the trouble to check. My mistake.

kptrojans your thinking process is rather selfish. Staking to keep players from other teams may aid USC but does not assist player's dream of NFL.

Morantz (or whatever we should we call you), shall we dance (why are you challenging me again). My thinking (which is not selfish) has nothing to do with the possibility of limiting of these RB's from their NFL dreams. What I am comparing is the current quality and depth that Troy has over any other program in the nation. While some of the RB’s may be limited in there chance to shine, there is no disputing the quality of RB’s, regardless of the current injuries or slow progression. At any point, if any of the RB’s feel they can’t cut it or want more PT, then they can transfer (ala Whitney Lewis), but look at the decision of Chauncey to stay and grind out. Not to mention the merit and guts of Herschel to say “I want to play at SC”.
