That should prove quite conclusively what everyone has been saying all along - Sanchez is damn slow! He is simply out of his depth at the college level. Whitney Lewis Part II. He proved it at the scrimmage and the 40 above is just further proof.

Thank goodness for Mitch Mustain coming in!

Thanks Scott for posting Sanchez’s 40 time! You know this is going to lead to 50 plus responses. So I will start it out!

I hear Mustain ran the 40 in 4 seconds flat!

Booty's doesn't move much faster than Sanchez!

The QB competition should be interesting for 2008. Sanchez (who couldn't beat out Booty!) vs. Mustain (who couldn't beat out Dick!)

The bad news just keeps piling on for Sanchez. It was no secret that he was slow, but this is simply pathetic. Even Kalil, who is a hulk of an offensive lineman, ran the 40 faster than Sanchez. And Kalil has about about 100 lbs on Sanchez. Really, this is pathetic.

So Sanchez is now the slowest player on a roster of 80+? He's finished.

Corp must be having the time of his life right now. Can't imagine what Mustain is thinking, but it's probably not fear or intimidation, that's for sure.

Its good to know that if kicking doesn't work out for Buehler he can always be an NFL cornerback.

Why all the concern about Sanchez's 40 time? 4.8 isn't bad for a pocket passer. Leinart had to be slower than that and he turned out just fine.

JAM said:

Ah yes! I remember all those Carson Palmer / Matt Leinart scampers down the sidelines for 80+ yards. Good thing those guys had scorching 40 times.

PFitz4USC said:

Is Sanchez really the slowest player on the team? That doesn't sound too promising for him.

I'm more impressed with the kickers speed that is blazing for a kicker!

Buehler is one of my favorite players on the current tea,. I mean the guy is a kicker that hits FG's from 50 yards out, runs a 4.4-40, wears a neck roll and alternates as a safety. I'm still waiting for some kick returner to break the first level, think they're home free and get laid out by Buehler. The only kicker in the country that can run down a WR and lay a hit.

for the record kalil's best time was 4.96 in the 40 at the NFL combine.

t.brady was 5.28 (or close to it) in the 40 in his NFL combine.

I hear Sanchez lost a race to Mike Patterson. Maybe he needs some Chuck Barry training.

According to NFL.com

Matt Leinart ran a 5.0
Carson Palmer ran a 4.65 JaMarcus Russell ran a 4.72
Alex Smith ran a 4.7
Brady Quinn ran a 4.72

So yes Sanchez is slow but not that far off from the average of the top QBs taken the past couple years. Speed is not everyting at the QB position.

4.8?

wow...hope our O-line is gonna be solid next year..he won't be escaping anyone.

He doesn't seem fat or overweight or anything...why is he so slow?

Turnstiles said:

4.8 is quite slow.

USC1966: He does look fairly fat to me. Tree trunk legs and some extra baggage. He's definitely no Vince Young.

Mustain is surely going to be much better.

All this concern about Sanchez's 40 time is madness.

Agree with Tyler and others...I'm not too concerned about the 40 time for a guy whose job is to move seven steps backward and throw the ball. If Sarkisian installs the triple option, then we can worry.

Now we're concerned about Sanchez's 40 time?! Luckily, the depth chart for 2008 will not be set by the readers of this blog.

Sanchez's slowness is a valid point to bring up since it has been questioned on numerous occasions by those who have seen him play. These numbers simply validate one of the many concerns people have had about Sanchez. He certainly is slow, but it's no longer a cause of concern since faster and better QBs are coming in. Both Corp and Mustain are faster than Sanchez, with Mustain being in a whole other world altogether as a QB from Sanchez in every sense.

Corp is a QB who can run with the ball and is very fast. He's kind of a Vince Young type. Mustain is a complete QB - can run with the ball, has excellent accuracy, great play calling and very good in clutch positions. He's also a pro with the media, which Sanchez has proven he most certainly is not, with the LA Times having caught him in a lie about an incident captured on videotape.

As it stands now, this will probably be Sanchez's last year as the 2nd string QB. In 2008, it appears that he may fall down to 3rd string behind Mustain and Corp.

No one can say that Sanchez didn't have his chances. He had more than enough chances to prove himself and get the starting position. Instead, he embarrassed himself both on and off the field, with his recent scrimmage performance being the last chance he had to move out from the position of being the back-up QB. He ended up securing himself as a back-up QB more than ever before, but now he has other QBs coming in who will put him in his place.

Sanchez had his chances and simply couldn't step up. Corp and Mustain are who we should be looking to in the post-Booty era.

There are some truly asinine comments on this page. If anyone really believes that David Buehler runs a 4.4 forty, I can sell you a real nice bridge. It overlooks the Hudson river in Brooklyn. It's pretty sweet.

Anyway, a 4.8 forty is not a slow time for a quarterback by any means. Now I don't believe Mark Sanchez really ran a 4.8, because the guys with the stopwatches are notorious for giving generous times, but a 4.8 even by their measurement is fairly mobile. It should be noted also, that JD Booty ran a mere 3 hundreths of a second faster, so if you're going to call one guy a lead foot, the shoe fits the other guy as well.

Look up other quarterback forty times before throwing stones at our perfectly mobile back-up quarterback.

Tyler Author Profile Page said:

Agree with you sureshot32. Carson ran a faster 40 at the combine than Alex Smith, JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn. I don't think anyone would say that Carson's a more mobile QB than any of those guys. 40 times mean Jack to pocket passing QBs and only really should be considered in running Qbs like VY or Vick. Can Sanchez learn to take a 5 or 7 step drop and step up into the pocket to escape pressure? That's all that matters.
