What's Your Number?
The things we do for you readers.
It's official: Quarterback Mitch Mustain will not, I repeat, will not wear No. 13 next season.
USC coach Pete Carroll said he was unaware anyone gave Mustain the same number as tailback Stafon Johnson even though Mustain is listed as No. 13 on the team roster (let's see how long that stays online).
``I clear all number requests,'' Carroll said. ``We've never even talked about what number he would wear. I asked if anyone knew about it today. It won't be 13.''
If Jim Healy were around, this is where you might hear, ``Who goofed? I've got to know.''

Thanks, Scott. We can all sleep so much better now knowing that Jersey-Numbergate 2007 is under control!
I wonder if Fox News and CNN will pick up on this great controversy...
This clearly is the biggest story in the off-season!!!! Maybe we should start a pool as to what number Mustain will wear this year, before switching back to No. 16 next year. Vegas odds makers are on this as we speak...
Forget arrests, transfers or ineligibilities...jersey numbers being shared by two football players is the REAL CANCER affecting USC football!!!
How will we ever get over this as a university? Have we lost our innocence forever? Will there be a film made about this? When's the book coming out?
This is simply too big of a story. Just too big.
SW, great job. Now everybody can relax because it will take the pressure off of Stafon, although Stafon still needs to step it up out on the field, and show everybody what he is capable of doing. I guess with number conspiracy being put to rest, now Bill, 13-9, Door Prize and the rest of the Anti-Trojan "num-nuts" will have to find something to else to try and tear the Trojan nation apart on. Fight On!
Scott:
Now that Mustain is officially a Trojan, I see there still have to be at least a couple of stories from you about him on this blog each week. Since there have been more posts on this blog about Mustain than any other Trojan player ever before, it makes sense that you have to get the number of stories about him up, just to make sure that no player in the future will match the number of blog posts dedicated to Mustain.
So if it's true that your blog really does get more hits than any other page on the Daily News website, as well as all other USC related sites, then you're wise to give the people what they want.
More Mustain = More site visitors
No Mustain stories = No one cares
So let's try to get at least one Mustain story a week until he starts at quarterback in 2008. We're already up to, what, about 50 stories since January on him?
Great info Scott.
Maybe he will take 10 once JD Booty graduates.
It gets all the hits because Mustain and his five aliases hit the site 400-500 times a day!
Party On!
Jim Healy
My dad and I listened to him every day on the way home from school.
Good times.
Robby Green, the 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback from John Curtis High School in River Ridge (La.), says he has around a dozen offers, but denies a leader. He favors LSU, USC, Alabama, Florida, Arizona State and West Virginia, and all have offered.
Green says he's going to summer camps at USC, Alabama and LSU, but will also try to visit Florida, Arizona State, West Virginia and Mississippi unofficially.
"I followed LSU, of course, but I also really like USC and Florida and all the teams that would win a lot."
"I like everything about USC," he said. "They have great coaches and players and I love California. I've got some family out in Orange County and I visited them last summer when I was there for a UCLA camp."USC has amazing tradition and they are always in the top 10," Green said. "I also have a great relationship with the coaches, especially Ken Norton (linebackers). He's a great guy and he's not a BSer. I talk with him a lot and he says that I'm the type of player they are looking for. I guess they didn't get any corners last year and said that I could start.
Trojan_JP, let's hope instead that no one wears #10 after Booty graduates because the school will retire his number and place it among the other Heisman winners.
greg b - i'm down with that.
retired #10 means good things happened in 2007.
milk - what about CB t.j. bryant? give us some info.
Maybe he'll switch from 13 to 19?
Sorry, I think it's lame to be pasting that everywhere without any context, but in this situation I couldn't help myself. I'm surprised no one has said it yet :P
