Next Target?
Looks like USC's search for a fullback will continue elsewhere after Derrick Coleman committed to UCLA. That could be good news for Dewitt Stuckey of Lincoln High School in Stockton.
Stuckey, who is also a linebacker, made an unofficial visit to USC and is being considered as a fullback. The Trojans might act sooner than later after Coleman committed before they had a chance to offer a scholarship.

Comments
Is this a bad things? Stuckey seems to be more highly regarded.

We will be fine at fullback. Of all the positions we recruit, I worry the least about kicker and fullback. SC will get a decent 4 star TB/FB or TB/LB to come in and star. I almost would rather have a JC transfer fullback bruiser isn't necessarily concerned with draft position. What about that El Camino JC fullback?

Stuckey more highly rated by who? Scout.com.
A coaches evaluation is far more important. Coleman to UCLA is more important as another recruitment victory for Bruins and another predicted result as fallout from 13-9. USC needs to crush Bruins next year but UCLA fields a good team with a very good defense and that may be harder than most USC fans predict despite being at Coliseum. Walker is still the defense coach that PC had first shot at.

Actually I would worry very much about a getting a competent fullback. In the balanced offensive scheme the Trojans run, a fullback is the linchpin to a wide variety of schemes and formations.
He serves as the primary blocker on blitzes, especially safeties and linebackers on the weakside.
He is the lead blocker for I-formation runs and sweeps.
He is the release receiver for the quarterback when everyone else is covered.
He is the mismatch on post and wheel routes when he is lined up in the slot or in a split backfield against a slower linebacker or defensive end.
Not having a fullback last year because of Jody and Stanley's injuries really hurt us last year and took out about 15 percent of our playbook, especially passing plays. It really killed us since it made our offense so one dimensional in formation sets.
Anyone looking at the single backfields we ran so much last year could see how easy it was to tackle the runner or get the blitz on to knock down Booty's passes.
You really saw how much not having a good fullback hurt us in blocking schemes where we had big problems gaining short yardage. Anyone remember how Thomas Williams, trying to fill in at fullback, consistently missed blocks during the UCLA game?
You need that fullback who can read the blitz and know when to release to help out the quarterback or know when to stick in the pocket and block. That kind of decision making in reading defenses comes with experience at the fullback spot which is why it's so hard to convert people to it. You have to have the smarts and vision of a quarterback, toughness of a linebacker, hands of a receiver and speed of a running back.
They don't grow on trees, which is why we keep looking for one.

Before you bRuin scrubs (that's you miguelito) start to comment, you may want to re-read the post.
USC did not offer Coleman a schollie. If he was such an important recruit I think Pete would have completed the transaction by now.
Scott - was there really that much interest or are you just looking to stir the pot a little?

I really think miguelito needs to get back on his medication. As much as I would prefer to simply say he's an uneducated moron, it's easier to discuss this topic like a knowledgeable fan.
Pure fullbacks are a little bit of a rarity in high school where most coaches have adopted spread offenses to take advantage of mismatches since across the front line talent is so much more uneven in high school ball. So most big running backs like Darrell Scott at St. Bonny do time at the tailback and fullback position.
By the time you get to college then you start specializing. In Coleman's case, he's not a pure FB which is frankly what USC needs and wants badly right now. That's why Coleman didn't get an offer from Pete right away.
So before you think this is a recruiting win by UCLA, you should first understand just what the hell is going on in the recruiting world.
But, if it helps you to understand this issue better on the intelligence level of a Bruin fan:
Five more years of Karl Dullard is just fine by us!
I love Karl! Great coach! Great clutch guy. Definitely will be taking you to many more Las Vegas and Silicon Valley bowls in the future! Woo hoo!
I think you might even beat Stanford this year! BTW, try not to choke too badly against the Irish again this year.

Hey MORONtz -
Walker a great defensive coach?! UCLA a great defense?! How could they go 7-6 last year and get blown out in the emerald nut bowl with a "very good defense"? One lucky catch against SC gives you just that - one lucky catch - not a good defense. Now go back to the UCLA women's waterpolo blog young man...

Took Miguelito 5+ hours to get to the site today...things are looking up for us Trojan fans. Get that up to 5+ years and then we'll really be cooking.
Now if we could only get 13-9 here to add his useless input.

Globehop,
I enjoyed your comments about the fullback position. For someone like me (USC alumni and fan w/out the football knowledge), I always look forward to comments that educate me.
Note to Bruin Fans: Keep posting your meaningless comments, they enterain me because of the zero value and the jelaousy towards our program. And don't worry about stealing recruits from us, if they go to you, rest assured, we don't want them!
Fight On!
